Should your dog sleep in your bed with you? Emily answers this burning question with four determining factors.
It’s important to also remember that dogs should not sleep in the bed or room for that matter of children or babies. This is because an adult is not awake in the room to supervise the dog and child to make sure the child is safe.

My dog sleeps in her own bed. I can't sleep when she keeps trying to go over and under the cover or lies on top of me. So I taught her she can only come into my bed if I invite her in, for example when I'm reading in bed it's fine for me if she is in my bed, but once I turn off the lights and go to sleep she goes into her own bed.

For the first half year or so, our dog wasn't allowed on the bed at all. I was always intending to let him on the bed for cuddles eventually, but I first wanted to make sure he gets into the habit of sleeping in his own beds. I'm really happy with the outcome; he never goes on the bed when we're not around, and he sleeps on the couch at night. But when we call him for bed time cuddles, he comes running. He also comes over every morning and asks for his cuddles. We never have to worry about him getting on the bed while he's dirty, which was a huge problem with our previous dog. My grandma raised that one to sleep in the bed from the start, and the end result was a dog who came home after rolling in the mud on his walks, and just went straight for the bed😕

Thank you for this sensible advice. I have a fearful pup who we have been working with, with a behaviourist. When he first came home he would only sleep under my arm or on my lap (he is a small dog) . I come from a traditional family, who think dogs should sleep down stairs, and new pups should 'cry it out' at night on their own. This just felt wrong for my trembling, scared pup and so I let sleep him on my bed, where he settled immediately. He also has a ramp to get on and off the bed (much to my family's disgust). How refreshing to hear your advice that it isn't a universal 'No' to the question of dogs on the bed but like so many things with dogs, 'It depends' - on the dog and the humans. Common sense meets compassion, phew!

@Ronnyqt I think my family were just out of date and had experience mostly of working dogs. They viewed treats as bribery and believed in tapping dogs' noses with a rolled up newspaper to 'tell them off. ' Dogs can be so flexible and forgiving, I don't think my family ever thought they were being intentionally cruel. But I agree, there are a lot of spoilt dogs out there too.

Since we've always had a big bed ( king) we've always given the option to the individual dog to join us. However, they have their crate and beds in the room as well. Since we had long haired dogs, I often think they were just too hot to join us and were comfortable in their own space. Occasionally, we would get a foot cuddle on a night or so. With our newest dog ( Pembroke Welsh Corgi) she's definitely a cuddly pup. But we've taken precautions because of her back. We lowered the bed so that she wasn't jumping up or down. We keep all energy in the bedroom calm so that they don't associate the room with play. The dogs always know as we enter the room that it is bedtime. It's the cat that didn't get the memo.

When we rescued our girl we let her first sleep in the bedroom but in her dog bed. After maybe 6-9 months we started allowing her to rest on the bed during the day (it is a high bed that we're swapping out) so she could lookout the window. We gradually let her earn the privilege to sleep with us in the bed and now she does it every night, she likes to sleep *on* us to feel safe which is kinda cute :) She's been through hell before she came to us so she deserves the best!

I love this!!! Much needed video. My family think I'm nuts because I have stairs for my bed or when I tell people she sleeps in my bed. I encourage my dog to sleep on her bed in my room because I'm a very active sleeper. But if she jumps into my bed it's no big deal and she stays on her blanket on the bed usually. Such useful tips and thoughts to consider.

before actually owning a dog I used to think sleeping with one`s dog was a terrible idea. it`s been 2 years since I adopted a stray puppy left outside my place, and the dog`s been sneaking into my bed for over a year now. gotta tell you it feels wonderful to sleep with her in my bed. she`s just the right size, a medium sized dog that weighs 15kg. she sneaks into my bed at exactly the same time every day, just before I get up in the morning. she doesn`t go under the sheets. she just lies on top of the bedspread and hardly moves around. usually betters my sleep!

Yeah, I need to move up to a king size bed. It's amazing how much space even small dogs can take up. I avoided all the behaviour issues by banning them from the bed for the first 6 months or so. I established all the appropriate habits first and when they were rock solid, I could relax the rules. They both new "on" and "off" which I transferred to the bed. Ted tried pushing the rules in the beginning and lost his bed privilege a couple of times (he had some guarding issues back then). They also have a trunk that I modded with a padded lid that they can both sleep on at the end of the bed. It's also a bit lower so provides an easy step up onto the bed. There's nothing better than being woken up by a dog in the morning !

I'm lucky. Double bed and a smaller large dog. (IE, she's about the size of a border collie, but much heavier. Classified as a large dog, but not really that big as big dogs go. lol) So plenty of room. It took me a LOOONG time to get her to WANT to sleep on the bed, and her crate is still open in the room so she can go there, but once she caught on, she spends her nights up with me. She's pretty polite and has 'her' area of the bed (down near the foot) and doesn't seem to want to come sleep near my face. (I wouldn't mind so much, but it's probably healthier that she stays down there.) I tend to sleep with my legs right at the edge of the bed anyway, so she has pretty much half the bed to herself to stretch out. We do a bit of shifting back and forth in the night, but all in all we seem to manage well together and it's rare she wakes me up. I do, however, keep my pillow covered so she can't get on it (for the same reason stated in this video. :P) and end up washing ALL my bedding more often. I also have a 'protective' blanket on the lower half of the bed to help collect the hair/dirt she carries up. Which - of course, half the time she'd rather sleep on my half of the bed. It sort of turns the quilt into a hairball fast. Ahh well. lol All in all, I find having her with me at night is a HUGE comfort. I actually sleep better with her, than I do without her. I would not trade it for anything. Note: She does NOT come under the covers with me. She sleeps on top. But I do have a blanket for her on nights when it's a bit chilly. I can flip it over her and she can slide out of it/roll it off her if she gets too warm.

We let our Havanese sleep with us anytime he seems to want to, or when we get an arctic blast and his crate is just too cold for him. But here’s one other thing to consider ... 99% of the time, he sleeps in his crate, for one reason big reason. When we very occasionally (maybe once/twice a year) need to board him, I can’t bear the thought of him not being used to his crate and being away from us AND having to sleep alone. ❤️

We started by letting our dog sleep in her crate and then on the couch, and she was fine with that. However, a year later I had a bad mental health crisis and it was much more comforting to have her with us. Sometimes she sneaks into bed in the middle of the night, but she must be part ninja because it never wakes me. She's only about 65 lbs and was the run of her litter. She's so sweet and loving.

We have 2 other older and smaller Poodle mixes, one of whom was grouchy and impatient with the new puppy (Cosmo). He would growl at Cosmo and sometimes bark akd lunge at him if he felt Cosmo was encroaching on his space. I finally let Cosmo sleep in my bed for his safety and my piece of mind. My mattress is always on the floor for the main reason because I'm short. But when I sleep at night, I have to stand up a huge arm pillow between my pillow and the wall. Why? My dog will sleep on my head. I have an extremely sensitive head, so any pressure will leave me with migraine headaches. Second reason, she rips my dang hair out in the night every time she moves and stands up. Third reason, she kicks me in the face, eye, and upside the head in her sleep or when she's getting comfortable. Fourth reason, she suffocates me. I'll wake up and can't breathe, or I'll roll over and inhale nothing but fur. She hates it when I block her since being by my head and around my shoulders is her safe place. She used to sit on my shoulders and wrap herself around the back of my neck when she was a puppy for car rides or if I was sitting on the couch. Now she's 30 pounds with long legs and way too big to do that anymore.

My family is planning on getting an 8 week old Whippet puppy, and we’ve been told by friends to keep it crated next to our bed during the night. They told us once the pup reaches 1-1.5 years old you can start letting the pup sleep with you, and I was wondering if you think this timing is correct? We’ll definitely be letting her sleep on the bed with us eventually since Whippets have such short coats, and love a good night time winter snuggle. :)

We’ve got a mini schnauzer who enjoys standing watching and being vocal about it. We’ve been trying desperately to make sure she’s used to sleeping full night away from us so we have flexibility when it comes to things like having her stay with family while we’re away or visiting. Problem is that she is very capable of waking up after only an hour or so with significant, nonstop barking. As I am always the one going to re-comfort her and put her back to sleep, I’ve gone full work weeks where my total achieved sleep was barely 12 hours total as a consequence. We have her in bed once a week as a treat, which she loves. Problem is, I don’t want to use the bed as a tool for preventing barking because I don’t want her to learn that she can get to sleep in our bed by excessive barking! What might be a way forward for this? Am i too worried about her ability to sleep elsewhere, should we just let her in the bed as and when? Or is the only real option to get a professional to help us modify the night time barking behaviour, because letting her in the bed would cause more nervousness and unreliability in future?
@kikopup
@kikopup 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest getting a white noise machine or an air purifier or fan and put it on at night this helps them sleep deeper, a cushy bed. You could even try a heated pad for pets in the bed. My chi has one. Becuase she’s too frail to sleep in my bed with the bigger dogs. You could have her in your bed if you want… when I’ve had someone dog sit I have them put my dogs in my bedroom and then they can sleep in the spare room if they don’t want 6 dogs laying on them at night

What do people do about dog okay to sleep in bed, but getting too close that I might roll over on her (chihuahua)? I'm trying to teach her to sleep on her own pillow, is this possible?
@majooch
@majooch 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Emily! Thanks for the video. I have a shelter dog who is reactive and suffers from separation anxiety, and my behaviorist advised me against the dog sleeping in bed. Instead, she told me to put her in a cage when I leave and also for the night; generally separate her from me as often as possible. Recently I let my dog sleep in bed with me and I noticed she's much calmer than in the cage (she sleeps through the night with no disturbance). Btw, she's quite small (17 pounds) and the bed is big. Does the cage make more sense in my case, or is the bed ok for the night and I should only use the cage when I leave? What do you think?
@kikopup
@kikopup 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe the behaviorist wanted there not to be such a drastic distinction as to when you are home and when you are not. But there is the aspect that too much time in isolation from social contact could also cause behavioral side effects. If you do sleep with your dog, you can for the separation training while your home, teach the dog to go and settle on her bed when behind a barrier like a baby gate or in a pen. Then you can practice moving away and coming back while the dog is relaxed. Also teaching your dog not to follow you around the house when you move from room to room is a great idea too.

My dog almost always sleeps in my bed. In the winter he likes to come under the covers and spoon, and the physical contact really improves my sleep. One time I had my sister's dog over the weekend while she was away, and I woke up to the dogs on either side of me, on top of the covers, effectively pinning me down so I couldn't move xD

@kikopup

I suggest training them to go to beds and lay on them for like 12 training sessions , 2 weeks and have them in the living room, then put up an x-pen around your bed and have their beds out, during the day and work on them laying in their beds, then at night try sleeping with the x pen around the bed, take care to not trip on it in the night, but if the dog beg to get in the bed you can give them the cue to go in there beds. You could also have a baby gate across the bedroom door but I expect you want the dogs in your room with you as well

Will it give you germs or parasites?
@kikopup
@kikopup Жыл бұрын
If the dogs are clean and parasite free no. If your dog has parasites, you are as likely to get them from touching your dog where they might have feces on their coat or if they just licked their butt and they lick your face... So Its not so much about sleeping in the bed, as keeping your house and yard clean and free of poop- clean it up as soon as it happens, you can do a fecal test on your dog at the vet to check for parasites. I suggest if your dog has fleas to get them treated asap as well. You might want to wash your dogs feet after visiting a dog park when getting home, so that when your dog is in bed their feet dont have some other dogs feces on, same with not wearing your shoes in bed

the biggest problem I've seen in finding a trainer, they all want the "easy" dogs.. it makes life very hard because they chose money over helping dogs in general. I tell 8 trainers in my area I have a "dog aggression" issue and they take a hard pass.. it's ridiculous.. 99% of the trainers I've talked to are a complete joke
@kikopup
@kikopup 4 жыл бұрын
:( I'm sorry :( I feel bad also saying that in my video because I know those special trainers I wish for people to find are few and far between. But I also don't want people to put themselves into unsafe situations without help. It's tricky. I am not sure if you just have dog aggression or RG but here is my RG protocol: dogmantics.com/resource-guarding-protocol/ and I do have a protocol on Behavior Modification : dogmantics.com/protocol-for-emotional-and-behavioral-modification/ Maybe though at least its good when people say "no" to you instead of yes and you waste your money and time. You can look for a veterinary behaviorist perhaps but sometimes they can also be old school but might catch something medical a dog trainer might miss.

Guys, if you're dating a girl who refuses to sleep without her pet animal in the bed with her, she's not the one. She won't give up this gross habit & you'll either have to get used to having little or no sex life, or force yourself to be ok with having an animal audience whenever you want to be intimate with your lady. Not to mention, there's no guarantee the critter won't try to interfere.

@7thCobweb
@7thCobweb 4 жыл бұрын
Dog Training by Kikopup canon produces its own wireless mics. however don't even look for the popular wmv1 bc they have been discontinued and they are hard to find. you can check the compatibility usually by clicking on any product at a seller's site. it must be listed somewhere in the details. the Movo WMIC7C should be compatible w canon and the price is ok - but i can't give a recommendation bc i've not personally used it. i think the easiest way for you to find an alternative would be googling the camera you have and look for recommended mics. but before buying a whole new mic, i'd rather experiment with a different position of the one that you currently have. sorry that i can't help out too much!
