We often talk about our dogs giving us unconditional love, but building a bond and real trust with your pup takes some time.
Earning a dog’s complete trust isn’t as simple as giving out a few treats and belly rubs, especially if your pooch has had some negative experience with humans in the past.
In this video, you’ll learn 10 signs that shows your dog really trusts you and shares a strong bond with you.
Handing you their toy as a ‘present’
One of the cutest things that dogs do when they trust you is give you toys, bones, or any random thing as a gift.
You may have no interest in your pup's tattered tennis ball, but their willingness to share it with you is a sign of true affection.
This is because most dogs are possessive of their belongings. When your dog offers to share something with you, like a toy or bone, they’re signaling that they feel fully comfortable with you.
Plus, studies have shown that dogs are more likely to share food with other four-legged friends rather than with strangers.
They sleep in your room
Typically, dogs sleep in a place where they feel comfortable. So sleeping in their owner’s room is certainly an indication of comfort. Wolves and wild dogs purposefully sleep in small, confined areas with pack members they trust to protect against predators.
Our dogs think that we are in their pack, and feel like they can count on us to protect them in the face of a danger.
So, if your dogs want to sleep with you, it means they see you as a trusted fellow pack member.
Their eyes say it all
If you and your dog can gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes, it’s a sign your dog trusts you and understands you.
Plus, scientists have shown that dogs develop strong emotional bonds with humans by staring into our eyes.
They Listen
Some people think training a dog is all about the dog, but it’s actually about the bond shared on both ends of the leash. If a dog doesn’t trust their owner, they are less likely to respond well to training.
Your dog doesn’t panic when you leave home
Dogs who freak out when they are left alone, may fear they are left alone forever, that their human is never coming back. This can manifest in your dog crying, whining, scratching at the door and misbehaving. Sometimes this means they want to join in on the fun they’re missing out on, but it could also mean they’re not completely confident that the people they love are coming back.
If your dog fully trusts you, they won’t doubt that you’ll eventually be back for belly rubs and playtime. They will wait patiently for you to finish up whatever business you have to do, and they will be at the door ready to greet you when you get home.
They are Confident and Relaxed Around You
Dogs that trust their owner will display a confident and relaxed body posture. They keep their mouths slightly open, blink their eyes often, and their tails are either wagging or perky and loose. This type of body language indicates your dog is confident around you and isn’t worried or scared. Your doggo trusts you to keep things under control and protect them if needed.
They follow your lead
The results of a 2013 study showed that dogs that have a strong bond with their owners behave similarly to that of human children with their parents. Dogs will look to their owners when they’re uncertain. They get distressed when they are put in an unfamiliar situation
Likewise, bonded dogs tend to have a strong recall response. They will make sure their human is close by in new, unfamiliar situations, and they are far less likely to run away.
They put their paw on you
If your dog puts his paw on you, it can be his way of saying “I love you.” We pet our pups to show our love and affection. By putting his paw on you whilst you are stroking him, he is further extending contact and reciprocating affection back
They check on you.
Watching TV, cooking, bathroom visits - your canine is there through it all - or at least they try to be. They’re not following you around the house because they think you may disappear, they do it because they love you and want to keep you safe. Checking up on you is just one way your dog shows affection.
They show you their belly
A dog’s belly is the most vulnerable part of their body. It’s instinctual for dogs to protect their vital organs. When they roll onto their backs or sleep on their side, they’re doing the exact opposite. Your dog showing you their belly is a sure sign they feel safe when you’re around. They are not worried that you’ll sink your jaws into their exposed abdomen, and they’re fairly confident you’ll protect them if something jumps out suddenly to attack them.

Having a pet at all is a responsibility. Think of it: we acquire these creatures, indeed humanity has modified/created these creatures, such that they can no longer survive in the wild but are utterly dependent on us. And we acquire them to do work for us, to take away our loneliness and provide comfort. We owe them everything. It baffles me that people take them for granted, or actively abuse them.

After losing my dog, I often agonised over whether he loved me as much as I loved him. He was a rescue and, as such, was quite shy and aloof around most people - obviously struggling with trust. I know it's too late but I've heard that it might have been prudent for your dog to see your mom after she died. Dogs need closure. It's said about this too when you have a pet die and you have other pets in the home. Pet's need to say 'goodbye'. We've done this with our pets we had to put down. We brought them home for the rest of the family to pay their respects. It's quite remarkable. After a little time passed, we took the deceased pet back to the vet for cremation(we've had all of out pets creamated and we have their ashes).

My condition for loving my dog when I have one, is that it doesn't bite me, luckily it's been very easy to love all my dogs. Of the dogs I've had over the years... Doggo 1: German Shepard named Murphy, was a great dog, not welcoming of intruders so he was a good guard dog too, never so much as barked at a family member, you could even pick up and move his food bowl while he was eating and he'd just follow you until you put it down, during walks on the sea front he would walk a circle around you constantly on the look for threats. Doggo 2: German Shepard named Sam, was a great dog to cuddle and not much fucking else, not only would he not defend against intrusion, I doubt the lazy bastard would've so much as raised his head to look at an intruder. Doggo 3: Collie x Lurcher named Ruby: she was loving to family, absolutely fucking vicious to everyone else, she would go for everyone when on a walk if they came anywhere near her, she was the runt of her litter, so she was bullied by her siblings before we got her, under no circumstance would it be a good idea to try and take her food, and she was fucking FAST, one time on the beach she ran and jumped and managed to take down a Seagull. Doggo 4: I don't even have a fucking clue what she is, but she's called Molly and she's a sweetheart, not aggressive, very calm, but she won't so much as go for a cat never mind intruders.

He wants to be with me constantly.....he has severe separation anxiety, due to this being when the abuse occurred. We chose dogs and they chose us as well, which is why i think our bond with dogs is so special. Wild dogs were hanging around early human camps and eating our scraps. This was beneficial for them of course, but also for us because it kept mice, rats and other scavengers that may spread disease from coming around. They would also warn us if something dangerous was approaching, like a bear, etc. Over time, the dogs who were less afraid of humans were more successful because they got more food and care from us. Eventually this turned into a mutually beneficial relationship. So while dogs are domesticated, they are not like most other domesticated animals in that they chose us as much as we chose them. The only other animal similar to that is of course, cats.

For those loosing a pet. If they are in pain, I believe it shows much more love to let them pass and take on the pain of loosing them than go to extreme lengths to keep them alive. They show us what unconditional love looks like. Just my personal opinion.

my dog died in May 2018 in July 2018 a 7.5 yr old Husky moved in had lots of aggression issues [toys/food/dogs ect] now she brings me her toys , presents her back to as she likes to be rubbed by her tail, sleeps on my bed. [training went well and I do what she tells me to do] I think in her previous life she had been in charge of her owners, once she learned I had the stronger will she calmed down and we now have a very good bond. Huskies have a mind of their own and are bred to think for themselves, if they don't see a reason to do something they won't or if they don't think you are worthy of being in charge they won't do what you ask of them

Sadly most people are very bad at reading their dogs. I have met so many dog owners with dog that claim my dog is afraid of other dogs because she got attacked when she was a puppy meanwhile they have to drag in the leash because their dog wants to say hi to my dog, so sometimes I mention that and then it happens sometimes that they say, yes it's me who is afraid because your dog is much bigger. I always react by saying well we are going to stay right here and you can come to us, but very slowly because you are afraid 😁. Yes, some people get angry but most of the time it works out fine and many have said ok now I don't have to be afraid anymore when we meet.

My dad isn't violent at all, but he will yell at objects if they frustrate him. My dog, Kristoff, gets scared when he does yell since his voice triggers the fight or flight response everytime. Even I get adrenaline whenever he yells, but he's not aggresive at all (he rarely yells at people). Kristoff always comes up to my room to snuggle with me so that he can tune out the yelling session that doesn't happen often. He even looked at me for guidance when we were packing to move. I already had a pretty good idea that he trusted me, this video confirms it.

I relate with that so much. My dad has anger issues and while he does yell at the family members, my dog has never been hurt by him, but she does get scared when he’s in a bad mood and she’d hide behind me or go to my room. The same is true for when she does something bad like take something of my mom’s and when my mom scolds her, my dog instantly runs to me and will go behind me, it feels good to be her safe space

My dogs just drive me crazy when I get home from work. They will jump at me, turn around and always follow me wherever I go. I remember when one of them suddenly died of uncertain illness. It took me over a month to recover from his loss. I guess this is just part of our existence. My first dog (who’s over the rainbow bridge now) always wanted to sleep with me every night. At first it was just a routine of snuggling with me while I was watching a movie until it was bedtime and then he would leave but one night he refused to leave and slept with me the entire night and it continued up until his very last night when he was only 8 years old (cancer). When I was younger (he lived from when I was 8 to 16) he preferred to sleep curled up in a little ball right next to my head instead of at my feet because I used to kick in my sleep, but when I got older and I stopped doing it, he then preferred to sleep at my feet. He would hang out with me soooo much he actually had TWO dog beds: one in the living room and one in my room LOL 😂

Yep my boy will play fetch 2-3 times, then keep away (and he has to win), then after he wins he brings the toy and does a light tug o' war and eventually lets me win and throws a little exaggerated tantrum to let me know I won (much like I used to do to signal his victory when he was a pup and we'd play keep away) this quickly becomes belly pets and finally a cuddle nap. Its almost like a going to bed routine now that he's older.

To anyone reading this, this is bad advice. Don’t ever play dominance games with your dog, let alone allow your dog to win the game, be that tug of war or wrestling etc. It only enhances their prey drive and can lead to serious behavioural problems later down the line. I’ve been training dogs for 5 years now and all too often my clients get confused as to why their dogs are possessive over food/toys etc and that’s due to the fact the owners treat it like a game and encourage their dogs to thrash their toys around while growling, which in a dogs world is a means to kill their pray. Allowing your dog to play with a toy is fine but when the dog starts growling/thrashing severely, that’s the point when you should end the “game” and remove the toy as to not end up with a possessive/dominant/aggressive dog.

@@christophermc2 I agree, my adopted Husky was like that, food/toy/dog aggression, I think her previous owners had let her be in charge of them for over 7 years, when she came to me she had to learn that I was in charge and a lot of growling was done at me, always stood my ground and made her go outside no matter how long it took, now I have lovely playful dog who gives me her toys to play with, plays with other dogs and doesn't go for me when I go near her food

My doggo curls into me, back and forth so lovingly, he almost knocks me over! (120 lbs of lab). His tail wags so fast, his whole hind quarters and back legs move with it! 🥰🥰🥰 There is no greater affection to receive than from your doggo!

I have a Havanese-the Velcro dog-meaning he does everywhere I go and sleeps on my bed on his back, belly up, front paws tucked in, snout to the heavens, his earnest lower lip exposed, as though he is praying. it’s pretty standard behavior for his breed, but I do love it!

My 3 month puppy does all of this o has her since she was 7 weeks old , she just started sleeping in my bed 2 days ago and she will put her little head on mines and it warms my heart. She follows me all over my apartment even in the bathroom lol she will bark when I take Shower because she can’t see me and when she goes on walks if I let her time off on her own she always looks behind to make sure I’m there . I guess my puppy loves me because I definitely love her but I am working with her on her separation anxiety it’s so bad but after a while she calms down

I've owned dogs for 21 years now, I currently have a Labrador and a German shepherd, both 11 yrs old now. For separation anxiety try giving them a old shirt or jersy with your scent on it. That helped calm my Labrador right down as a puppy. She sleeps on it even now and drags it everywhere like a security blanket.😀

My mom had a dog who would lose hair whenever she left. We were her 5th rehome and had her to the day she left us. I felt so bad for her. We would go for walkies and she would want to go home and see “mom” even if she was at work. She was a sweet girl I don’t understand how she kept getting rehomed.

The easiest way to solve separation anxiety is to get them another dog ( or sometimes even a cat). I've learned i only have dogs in pairs. Goes a lot better that way when your off to work etc.

Cool, Tippy does all this. I like it when Tippy sleeps on his back, he ends up snoring. "looking behind to make sure owner is ok" I broke my toe and can barely hobble around for our walks, instead of the usual speed walking and nearly running, Tippy walks slow and looks behind him often to make sure I'm ok and he's very patient when I have to take a break. When I was really sick Tippy gave me his special toy, Ducky, to hang onto until I was well again, even made sure I took Ducky with me to work.

3:50 My dog may not panic, but she sure does not like it. If we all leave the house as if going to a friend’s house or to a restaurant, she’ll hop up onto the couch and stare out the window as if saying “Where are you going without me?” One time when it was just me at home for a week while my parents were out camping (I had to stay home due to work) and my dog really didn’t want me to leave, when I accidentally dropped my keys, she immediately ran over and sat right on top of them and gave me the “sad puppy face.” It completely broke my heart having to leave her that day

@mo9620
@mo9620 2 жыл бұрын
@@MelodyJasper333 it's a long training proces. The food sharing I had to resolve with agression, she ate her food as fast as possible then attacked my other dog to steal his food. That happened 2 times, the thirth time I was prepared. The moment she made her move towards my other dog I launched over the table and grabbed her. Had her down on the floor with my full weight on top of her. Held her there for about 10 minutes and made it very clear I wouldn't tolerate any agressive behaviour inside the house. From that moment that problem was solved. With toys she would do the same but not with agression, she just took the toy away from the other. And I took it from her and gave it back to my other dog. They both had exact the same toys , I bought everything double. Took a while but she figured out her plans didn't work. And the agression outside towards other dogs was a nightmare to get under control. The first 2 years nothing worked, now the other dog passed away and there's huge progress made. She loves food , so I bought tiny treats and made her work to earn them.

I was never a dog person. In fact, I never really cared for them. Then, about 16 years ago my wife and I got a Yorkie….and my life changed. He passed away 3 years ago and I was devastated. It was like part of me died too. It took a long time for me to get over his death….though I still miss him. We just got another Yorkie puppy a few months ago and he is a wonderful little guy. It didn’t take but about two minutes for us to bond. What a great thing to have a dog in your life. Happy to say that my wife and I rate a thumbs up on all the points made in your video. 😁

My neighbors lab, I question how abused she is….I went to pet her once and she flinched. Broke my heart. She follows commands perfectly for him but her whole demeanor is timid and scared. Where as My guy is 80% when it comes to commands but loves and trusts anyone. I’ll take my way anytime…he loves me, doesn’t fear me.

I honestly believe having a dog and building a strong relationship with it is one of the most satisfying and meaningful things we as humans can do in our lives. It´s sad there are still so many cultures around the world where dogs are little more than alarm devices for some added property protection.
