@stephenbirchall9417 ай бұрын
Once you buy your Tesla, you don't need a contactless card to open the doors. It detects your phone as you approach and unlocks. The regenerative braking takes about a day to get used to but when you take your foot off the accelerator, yes the brake lights do come on.
As someone who started driving at the end of the 1970’s when cars were rusty, slow and unreliable, BUT could be mended and kept running with a few tools and a bit of common sense, we could drive, we could open our own doors, stay on the road by using our skills, drift the back end, change a flat tyre fix an exhaust with gum gum and a coat hanger. I would love to go back to the cars of the 1970’s again and regain the shear enjoyment of driving and the simplicity of cars which made life so good. Back then we knew how to look after ourselves without all these so called driver aids, or government controls as we call them.

Door handles (exterior) are so easy - use the thumb to press the right side, and the other fingers to pull the handle. The 'emergency' indoor handles don't slightly lower the windows to avoid glass/rubber damage. Remember how it beeped when you used it, if you had looked at the screen, it would have warned about its use. While you're driving, most of the things you might need to change (climate control, navigation) are easily changed by voice control. Good on you for giving it a go. A couple of points: The brakes do light up when you take your foot off the gas if your slowing down down at a pace similar to a car breaking. Atnight you can see the brake lights lighting up but not during the day. Unlike other EVs, it can't be disabled, but you get used to it. 2) the electric door button drops the window below the seal before it releases the door latch, this is to stop the seal getting worn. The energy release, whuch scts like a traditional lever doesn't drop the window, so Tesla don't recommend using it. For the door handles use your thumb to press the outer door lever open and then use your fingers on the lever. 4) You link your phone's Bluetooth to use as a key, it unlocks as you open the door and locks when you walk away. Like you say, there's a lot to learn, but that applies to most modern cars.

You're absolutely spot-on with; what's the difference between that and a mobile phone! If I had the time and inclination, I'd count how many times you took your eyes off the road looking at the screen to your left. The whole motor industry needs to address vehicle control ergonomics, if we're to drive safely to the best of our ability. It's "eaten the range up" because you've got the lights and the heated seats on. So, apart from not accelerating too fast, you shouldn't drive at night or in the cold weather. Great these EV's aren't they? Can't wait to be forced to get one.

@TheOriginalCoda7 ай бұрын
I know how you feel, though there are 2 ways around this; 1. Use the voice command (physical) button and say “set temp to x” or just say “I’m cold”. Or 2. Buy a set of Bluetooth self adhesive buttons (expensive though) that you can program to do ANY of the functions that are buried in the touchscreen, even some functions that are not.

The problem with EV’s at the moment is insurance (especially Tesla’s). My 2016 BMW 330 will cost me £520 with 12 years NCD. A long range Model 3 is (cheapest) £1425 with the same details. To make it worse just last month I was getting quotes of about £1100. So that’s a 20+% increase in quotes in a single month 😳. Even if I had free electricity all year round the BMW would still be cheaper to run. Then there is the current depreciation of EV’s BECAUSE of insurance situation. Seen a Model 3 on AutoTrader up for sale since October and has had about 4k worth of price cuts. Obvious that the insurance trend is causing havoc in the used market.

When i ran the ownership numbers on my Model 3 before buying, it worked out that the savings i make on fuel are almost exactly the same as the extra insurance costs. And that is in Norway. I do think the UK insurance is a rip-off though. I got some quotes for having a model 3 in the UK using a random rural village address, and it would cost more there than here in Norway. Actually quite a lot more. Given the difference in labour rates, taxes etc. i really don't understand how that can be.
@binitbob7 ай бұрын
You need to change your insurer. I had a quote for a new Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Fully Comp with only 2 years NCB through Admiral for £728 with unlimited mileage, breakdown cover. And £860 for all that plus business use of up to 30000 miles pa.
@davidbrayshaw35297 ай бұрын
I'm in Australia. About 12 months ago, I ran the costs on a Model 3 Long Range. Yes, the insurance was expensive. But the biggest problem here is resale value. The depreciation is not only frightening, some of the used model 3's available had been advertised for months, with several having being advertised for over 6 months! The other troubling issue that I found was just how many ultra low mileage vehicles were up for sale. Why?
@15bit627 ай бұрын
@@davidbrayshaw3529 Depreciation is very region specific i have noticed. I grew up in the UK, where depreciation on a typical car is around 50% in 3 years. Now i live in Norway, where the typical depreciation is 50% in 5 years. That's a very different number. With specific reference to my Model 3, looking at the used prices here i would estimate that it is still worth about 70% of what i paid for it 3 years ago. That reflects a market where company cars are not so prominent, and EVs are the norm rather than the exception.

As someone who only recently sold their 59 plate mk4 Mondeo estate diesel (bought a slightly newer Jag diesel as I wanted a bigger engine to tow our caravan and wanted to stay with diesel) this 14 year old car was reliable with annual servicing. I also have an original 64Gb iPad that we use as a digital photo frame, from 2010, so pretty much the same age as the Mondeo. Whilst it mainly runs plugged in, the battery still works for an hour or so when unplugged. Some electronics can be reliable and have a long (~13 years plus) life span, but sadly you only need to look at what’s happened with Boeing in the last 5 years to see how things have been “improved” by MBAs running businesses for maximum profit and manufacturing items that only (mostly) need to make it out of warranty.

Use voice commands to easily control settings and preferences without using the touchscreen. Voice commands are designed to understand natural requests. Use them to: Adjust climate preferences. Tweak the windshield wiper speed and frequency. Control various aspects of your vehicle. Navigate to a location. Call a contact. Interact with apps and settings. To initiate a voice command, fully press the microphone button on the right side of the steering wheel. When a chime sounds, make your request, then Model 3 provides onscreen responses.

I caught up with him a couple of days later and mentioned to him that I think he’s unconsciously resting his left foot on the brake pedal. That's why they're weirdly not compatible with the roads designed for ICE vehicles. It seems Elon doesn't want to listen to the petrol heads for the simplicity is that he likes to engineer with 1st principles (that includes deleting things). Although I reckon Tesla might be forced to build ICE cars in the future if EVs get pushed out of the market. Or they remain the only EV car maker alongside niche EV makers.

Driving with one or 2 fingers touching a frozen steering wheel and tires with flat spots because so cold out takes 10 minutes at highway speed until softish ride. Shocks are still frozen another 10 minutes. That's when a heated steering wheel is appreciated.

You can turn off the regenerative braking, but why would you? Once you get used to it (5 minutes) it is not only the most efficient way to drive, but also means you rarely, if ever, need to use the brakes so no wear, no brake dust and no need to move your foot in order to slow down. Think of it as a 'speed required' pedal, when going downhill, you will see that although your pedal is in the same place, the car will be regenerating power into the battery.
