Because she has a screechy thin voice that is not an operatic soprano. Listen to the Madeline Kahn clip of this aria and just listen to the sound of her voice when she sings the slower sections. Now THAT is someone who should have sung more opera. And if you want to hear what an opera voice sounds like taken to its apex, listen to early Joan Sutherland singing the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lamermoor from the Bell Telephone Hour in 1962. I think she is probably like Barbra Streisand. She can do anything she wants with her voice. For me this is a stunning performance. Probably the best version of this song there is.

This is one of the most perfect renditions of any song (aria) ever recorded. Every singer should aspire to this level of virtuosity. To be able to sing this difficult music IN CHARACTER is brilliance beyond anything I can remember. It's opera and vaudeville combined. That's not just talent. It's talent PLUS hard work. Brilliant.
