Don't know if everyone remembers the Saturday Night Live sketches featuring the Conehead family (played by Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman), who were obviously space aliens, but who always replied to questions about where they came from by saying in a guttural tone: "From Fraaaaance." It sounds as if the audience for _Glitter and Be Gay_ remembered.

Because she has a screechy thin voice that is not an operatic soprano. Listen to the Madeline Kahn clip of this aria and just listen to the sound of her voice when she sings the slower sections. Now THAT is someone who should have sung more opera. And if you want to hear what an opera voice sounds like taken to its apex, listen to early Joan Sutherland singing the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lamermoor from the Bell Telephone Hour in 1962. Yes, others were great, but nobody in the history of opera had a voice like that.

Had I remained Beside my lady mother My virtue had remained unstained Until my maiden hand was gained By some Grand Duke or other. Ah, 'twas not to be; Harsh necessity Brought me to this gilded cage. Born to higher things, Here I droop my wings, Ah! Singing of a sorrow nothing can a__uage. And yet of course I rather like to revel, ha ha! I have no strong objection to champagne, ha ha! My wardrobe is expensive as the devil, ha ha! Perhaps it is ignoble to complain... Enough, enough Of being basely tearful! I'll show my noble stuff By being bright and cheerful! Ha ha ha ha ha! Ha! Pearls and ruby rings... Ah, how can worldly things Take the place of honor lost? Can they compensate For my fallen state, Purchased as they were at such an awful cost? Bracelets... lavalieres... Can they dry my tears? Can they blind my eyes to shame? Can the brightest brooch Shield me from reproach? Can the purest diamond purify my name? And yet of course these trinkets are endearing, ha ha! I'm oh, so glad my sapphire is a star, ha ha! I rather like a twenty-carat earring, ha ha! If I'm not pure, at least my jewels are! Enough! Enough! I'll take their diamond necklace And show my noble stuff By being gay and reckless! Ha ha ha ha ha! Ha! Observe how bravely I conceal The dreadful, dreadful shame I feel. Ha ha ha ha!

Beautifully done. In opera, one normally tries to show the audience that you're the best singer ever. In pop music, you try to show the audience a good time. Chenoweth is grounded in both genres, so we get both presentations- which is a great combination, if it succeeds! (And it does!) That approach also suits Bernstein’s work. Confession: This particular aria always struck me as the love child of Sempre Libera and Der Holle Rache.
