his solo in "magic" is a perfect example of his ability. not many guitarists could start a solo with a repetitive note several times in a row to get the pinnacle sound to carry the song to the end. great crunchy bass sound. i miss ben orr. great voice, excellent player. this guys were extremely tight for an electronic band. a great live sound which wasn't easy to accomplish back then. the 84 tour @ houston is a great show thats available for viewing. even the non top 40 "b-side" songs are great. don't cha stop, you're all i've got tonight, bye bye love, since you're gone. heartbeat city. great band.

I saw them live at the Warehouse, New Orleans on a hot summer night in '79 that many years later Elliot Easton described as a "sauna". They were SO good. Being a teenage of the 70's it was cool to dig the Cars. They absolutely ROCKED live. They were so perfect.. And all they had were the first two albums. One of the best shows I've ever seen. What does "underrated" really mean? Easton recorded 7 albums with the Cars, 1 with Ben Orr, 1 with his band Tiki Gods, and 1 solo. And he's contributed to countless other recordings. To me, "underrated" means that phenomenal guitar player (or any musician) that never got the chance to record or play in front of an audience. .

@@MSUSpartanFootball what you just described would be “undiscovered”. Underrated means they are known, had a successful career, but not frequently mentioned as one of the all time greats. This broadcast was the first time I'd seen the cars (Sept, 1980...I was 12...I think this is that broadcast. They performed twice on the show). They were the coolest damn thing I had ever seen or heard. I had a full time paper route. I had a pretty good stash of money. Went to Magnolia Thunderpussy Records on High Street near OSU (swear to god that is the real name of the place....look it up if you doubt it). Bought everything they had from the Cars. Best damn day ever. Wore those LP's out.

They really worked! Super talented band. Ric's arrangements and odd lyrical styles. Ben's voice added depth and feel. Elliott the secret weapon every great band has. His interpretations and melodic quirkiness had a hardness that cut through so powerfully. Keyboards pumped up the vibes and took the songs into genre bending styles. The drums consistently created a deep pocket of stability and quality. Foundational drumming created the canvas for the artist to jump on and off of. Wonderful band that had artists at each instrument. A very rare feat. This produced music that had authenticity and integrity.

Man they were tight! Looking back most of us seemed to take that for granted. But seeing them this many decades later you realize these guys didn't fuck around. Only after Ben's death did I finally get to appreciate Panorama, and then after Ric's death, I finally caught on to Door To Door and his solo stuff.

Indeed. I never realized how tight this band was til this year. I was on a lay off this summer for three months and started watching videos. Man, I just thought this band was just phenomenal! Ric Ocasek was as cool as the other side of the pillow. .... And a prolific songwriter. All of those guys were phenomenal.... especially Ben Orr. RIP

This is my favorite Cars song by far. The crazy rhythm, the chorus and that Easton guitar solo. Excellent. The original video - with the merry go round - is kind of an early classic. I always thought Ric Ocasek looked like Spock. Didn't sound like him, but definitely looked like him.

My favorite live performance of this song. I got the Panorama album when someone gave it to me at my sister's high school graduation party. "Hmm.. I don't really like this - do you want it? Uh-YES" At the time Candy-O was getting all the airplay and their first album was still played a lot, I put this on and was surprised at how different Panorama was from their first two albums, with its quirky lyrics and odd time signatures. Elliot totally nailed this performance and Ric even jams with him a little on his solo! Elliot is on his hot rodded Lead-I guitar here, this version of the solo is unique compared to the other times he played it live. Ric is churning out those eighth note "clickies" on his trusty Dean Cadillac.

This band just played perfectly. Elliot Easton is Never mentioned in greatest rock and roll guitarists conversations that I hear. He is one of the best to ever strap up and plug in! Ben Orr, held that bass line...Always tight with flare! Greg on keys, and D Robinson keeping the funky 5/4 time signature with Ben, while the rest played 4/4...Just Simply amazing! So Sad its over...but They WILL live on forever!

Elliot Easton is the BEST lead guitarist as far as I am concerned, and always has been. His solo's were just absolutely, beautifully arranged and perfected. His solos are not just thrown together, but have a purpose within each song. I am surprised to hear these guys playing this song live because I don't think that I have ever heard them play anything from the Panorama album. This album didn't sell well, but it was a masterpiece. At the time it came out I was the only one that owned it and few of my friends wanted to listen to it. I was studying music at college when Panorama came out and the syncopation and chaotic musicial variations were very different for the day, not many people warmed up to this album, except for us musicians. Some of us thought it was the end for this band also, and then MTV came out in 1981 and really helped to push their next album.

CandyO was the first album I “stole” from my older brothers; they were into hard rock, but they had this in their pile for some reason. Listening to it now, I realize what an influence it had on me and my taste in music. I was just a little too young to understand just how good these guys really were. I just knew it was different, poetic, and powerful compared to other music I knew of at that time.
