Gregg had a so sublime, exalted voice which giveth a special brand to the band, than Emerson who looks as a medieval knight which always tamed that monstrous Moog modular synth, and Palmer with his "fierce army of drums" when in motion a menace to any drummers of the time, an incredible trio they was, no match anymore.

One of the things I love about these early ELP live clips is the absolute groundbreaking old school technology that is being employed...Frequently, Keith is, literally, unplugging and replugging, patch cords, on the fly, in the middle of a solo, with his right hand, while he continues to actually play with his left, in order to produce a different sound on the synthesizer...("O.K., I'm gonna hit this low octave, then move 3 to 8, and tweak this clip above it, and it will make this sorta weird phase to high pitch effect")...Often, Greg and Carl are pausing briefly and waiting on this transition (and, I assume, hoping it works) before crashing back in on their parts...This band either rehearsed, hard, or had an unbelievably intuitive feel for each other. (I think it might have been both.) I liked how Keith would just sorta incorporate all the fiddling about into his choreography, kinda like Hendrix did when he was constantly adjusting his amps...

JONATHAN LOCKE I always thought he got the best synth sound. Over Wakeman, Wright, etc. Best tone from what can be a cold sounding instrument if you don’t know what you are about. Hi from Texas. See my comment about playing this song today in the first comments re: Tom in in service to Christ. He posted the Lyrics to this 2nd or 3rd remark. And I had to have those verses.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. Don’t even pretend it’s supposed to be about rock. The only prog bands I know are even in there apart from the uber mainstream Pink Floyd are Rush and Yes, and those inductions were both incredibly recent. TL;DR it’s a hoax.

@@arkanoiddudeyeh, it's unfortunately a corrupt voting system or something else like Jan Wenner truly being a doped up psycho casualty of the 60's. I mean seriously, the man decides he's gay in his late 50's or 60's like that other wack job fruitcake, Clive Davis. I've heard Wenner on a relatively recent Joe Rogan podcast, and it's patently clear that his faculties aren't quite functioning at full capacity. He doesn't seem to like true talent or musicians with real actual skills on their instruments. He likes rap and pop. Oh yeah, also penises. So once he's gone that way, to me, anything else after that is like the teachers voice in the Peanuts animated movies. Charlie Brown's Christmas etc. Waah waah waah-waah waah-waah. In other words, no pun intended, I can't hear a thing he says. It's all gooblygook.

When I saw them in 1970 at the age of 17, I went out after a concert and bought knee length shiny boots, a crushed velvet baggy sleeve top and tight jeans. Not that I was influenced or anything !!!! I must have looked ridiculous, but it didn't matter. These were true musicians and entertainers, the likes of which didn't exist at that time. Pink Floyd stood around boringly playing away to a light show (great music mind you!!), King Crimson hardly moved on stage (also great music) and ELP were madness on stage....especially Keith Emmerson, god rest his soul. Utterly brilliant memories. I count myself so lucky to have witnessed them....

Prog rock at its best. What an incredible band. Those were the days, i was a young kid, just getting into all these " heavier " bands after my stint listening to hit parade music. We called this type of music underground music. Still love it. Roy b, CapeTown south africa 🇿🇦

Wow, Keith Emerson can even play the keyboards from behind (right after he leapt over the organ around 6:32).

The lyrics; for those that like to sing along: Just a step cried the sad man Take a look down at the madman Hear the kings on silver wings Fly beyond reason From the flight of the seagull Come the spread claws of the eagle Only fear breaks the silence As we all kneel pray for guidance Tread the road cross the abyss Take a look down at the madness On the streets of the city Only spectres still have pity Patient queues for the gallows Sing the praises of the hallowed Our machines feed the furnace If they take us they will burn us Will you still know who you are When you come to who you are When the flames have their season Will you hold to your reason Loaded down with your talents Can you still keep your balance Can you live on a knife-edge

It’s so damn funny. I was just playing at my musical partners house. He plays drums and his dad, who is awesome, gave us a 72 Fender Bass because we have been looking for a year and he thought we were pathetic. Anyway, I was playing one of my songs, I usually play a Strat and Taylor SB, and out of nowhere I started playing this song in the middle of my own on this sweet bass. I knew immediately it was early ELP Tarkus? And I could here Greg in my head “if they take us they will burn us” It’s like he was channeling through me. Strange, but beautiful. Thanks for the lyrics as I was missing several phrases. Wow, man!

I've heard few bands ever cover this highly original group - not easily duplicated. Was fortunate to see them live in 1970 and many times after that.
