Nice tutorial. Regarding temperature control, one thing I did on a recent build that worked out pretty well was put an exhaust vent for CO2 from my industrial sauna into the shove vole room and just left the top of the ranch open to space. This kept all my steel machines around about 150 C and let the excess temperature evaporate into space. You don't get the small power return, but if you don't want to mess with liquid locks and a steam turbine, or don't have the room for it, that's an idea.
@FrancisJohnYT4 жыл бұрын
I did that one time as well, but due to some complications my CO2 stopped flowing and the whole thing overheated. It's amazing how quickly you end up with interdependent systems that can cause silly cascade failures.

You can fix the meat in the corner by putting your loader for the eggs on the far side and put a sweeper arm that can reach that spot, but can't reach the egg loader. It will grab the meat, but won't be able to move the eggs.

The reason why your rancher are able to maintain more than 32 voles each is that shove voles don't need to be groomed all the time. If a starving shove vole is groomed even just once before it runs out of calories, then it will lay an egg before it dies. In theory, if you have too many shove voles, then there is always a chance one of them will be unlucky and it will run out of calories before ever getting groomed. Still, if you can compensate for the occasional losses, then a fully dedicated rancher could maintain hundreds of starving shove voles on their own.
@AmbiguousAdventurer4 жыл бұрын
7:05 The simplest solution I came up with is to use two conveyor loaders and two auto sweepers. Auto sweeper 1 is out of range of the egg drop chute, and it picks up both meat and egg into it's loader. Run the rail through the egg drop chute and use automation to close the chute if critter count is higher than set number (then the egg/meat passes on to the kill chamber). Auto sweeper 2 now is set up to reach the whole room except loader 1, loader 2 is installed in the same column as the egg drop chute, so sweeper 1 cannot reach it. loader 2 is set to only accept meat. This way only meat at the egg drop chute will be picked up by the sweeper and eggs will be left behind to hatch.

I know alot of people that have played the game alot use the starve ranching of shove vole, but frankly, in the end game i want less and less dupe interactions, i just stack up eggs in a 12 tile room (so i can fit dropper and critter deposit for a while, and later on automation for harvesting meat and egg shell). So i just stack eggs and or shove vole into that room until i have 50 (usually have 10 dupes in my bases plus 2 astronaut on full time duty). With 50 shove voles you get 8000k of meat per cycle wich end up getting you 10k once bbq. Now for the transition i almost always use dreckos, at start i have 2 full ranches of dreckos (96tile standard rooms with top tile of hydrogen) and afteri get enough plastic i switch to normal drecko for as much fiber i can have for insulation. This method has worked on every single map for me, and i've always thought getting plastic and reed fiber trhough normal means was a waste of p.water and or petroleum, not to mention the hassle of keeping the plastic press at under 150° in my hot rooms or simple having to keep it cool and waste heat... TL:DR put shove vole eggs in a room until you have enough that they generate meat without any interraction, 50 shove voles gets you 10 dupes of bbq/cycle
@larrylindgren94844 жыл бұрын
But at game end you have automating everything. Your Dupes have nothing to do anyway (mostly). How much steel do you need? I have 300 tons. Why make more when you've made everything. Then you don't need to refine it. So what's that Dupe doing? Nothing. Sooner or later refining it's worthless. You do it just to have more of what you will never use. Ok. You tamed all the geysers. You have your Rockets. There's really nothing for Dupes to do if you automate everything you can automate. So what are your Dupes doing? Mine have nothing really to do. 300 tons steel I don't need. Plastic? Why? My tube network is done. Ladders are done. I don't make plastic. I have 50 tons I'll never use. Glass? Everything I've used glass for is done. I have 10 tons now doing nothing. So I never have to refine anything. For the most part. The map is dug out. All the geysers I'm going to do are done. So my Dupes do nothing for the most part. The only one that's busy is my Rancher:) Again what are your Dupes doing at game end besides eating and sucking up air (for the most part)?

Side note: starvation ranching of voles is almost as efficient as standard ranching of hatches/slicksters as far as grooming labor is concerned. The 32 critters per rancher still holds, expecially if you have dedicated suppliers (who take care of the food) or automation. 32 hatches provide calories for 20 dups (according to the food calculator). Just remember those are theoretical, no downtime, figures, I usually stick to my 7:4 rule, meaning 32 hatches provide food for about 18 dups. The beauty of this is that once you decide on your target population, you can hire the desired number of dedicated ranchers (since they are quite rare, planning in advance is very helpful). You can start with hatch ranching and then switch to vole starvation ranching and keep the same ranchers.

In the normal ranch, can the automation wire be hooked up to a short timer and then the conveyer loader for eggs? That way, it will only activate when the room has more than 12, and only for a second after the room hits 12 so the eggs can be loaded and shipped off. No need for a shutoff and the meat can still be collected. Just a thought, havent tested it yet.
@FrancisJohnYT4 жыл бұрын
I have played with something like this before and could not figure out a way to get it working. If you link to the auto sweeper it will load all the eggs at once. Yea I’m hoping Klei is going to solve these issues in their announced DLC. By that I mean giving the player an incentive to rely on separate colonies to extract and farm resources. Most of these current “efficient” systems rely heavily on exploits, such as starvation ranching which miraculously creates calories upon shove vole birth, or the current infinite geysers. I would much prefer the game to be where infinite sustainability is impossible, but you can make it so extremely efficient to where you can survive almost indefinitely
@FrancisJohnYT4 жыл бұрын
They usually listen to the fans, but I'm pretty sure they will leave in full sustainability. It was a very much requested feature back when it was only possible by torturing crying dupes.
@s40984294 жыл бұрын
I agree, mostly. I think the game is the most fun when you have the pressure of resources running out. Right now there is minimal incentive to go to space, you can easily build a self sustaining base without it. I think if there was just fewer water geysers per asteroid, so that you could only support a low number of dupes, this would encourage players to go to space and settle other asteroids.
@PyrokineticFire14 жыл бұрын
perhaps those exploitative mechanics could be rebalanced via modding. a new asteroid with a limited "lifespan" that would encourage further colonization would be interesting.

Done, perfect sustainable, fun? no, is completly boring thats way you build, you create farm, you explore the world, you get resorces... factorio you don't have infinite resorce of any kind except for water and energy, you don't have to survive tought, the more you build, the more dungerous it gets, and the very limited resource mean you have to fully outomize everything and you have to get lucky with your map to get your objective in short, having infinite resource get you the opportunity to waste in fun machine, or sometime to squish the more out of you resource think about an ony playtrough were you have to chose between an electrolyse setup or ranching becouse you don't have enought resource for both, think if you can't have a infinite resource of water.. what you do? (well we have alredy done this, making dupe vomiting and then let him breath the po oxygen, reclying theyr pee and making them eat dirt) is fun? not much and your duplicant spent most of its time to survive, meaning you can't do almost anything, dupe time is a very precious resource. i write too much XD

I was wondering if there is an advantage to use either starvation ranch vs evolution chamber? Is there one that is significantly more efficient than the other. Why use one rather than the other. At first glance it seems it would use less dupe activity to do an evolution chamber. Am I missing something?
@lordlard28334 жыл бұрын
The evolution chamber is faster and requires less dupe time but costs a lot more in terms of power (2 miners, automation, sweepers, etc.). The power to cook the meat is irrelevant when comparing them since that cost is the same per calorie. The starvation ranch requires only the energy to run the auto sweeper but since each vole takes longer to give you the calories it will take more dupe time per calorie gained. Evolution: More power, less dupe, resources to feed voles Starvation: Less power, more dupe, no resources on feeding voles Hope this helps.
@lordlard28334 жыл бұрын
@@sxmchn Yeah. I think that is especially true since you can get away with only having 2 squares for the grooming station to be standing on and the rest be pneumatic/mesh doors.

a regular ranch with 1 breeder and automation to only feed it what it needs every 9 cycles should keep the starvation ranch full indefinitely with the 2% chance to lay the dud (so long as you don't have their food at delecta temps)

Fancier way to deal with regolith is melt it into magma and cool it! Nets you an unhooly shitton of power and igneous rock which you can feed to hatches :P

Difficult to do as they they eat a ridiculous amount of algae. The most viable approach is to have a breeder fish or two you feed to fill a tank that starves (yes, again). There may still be some trick to feed them less algae than they really need. You used to be able to get away with a kilo per day but that was nerfed somewhat recently

To all those asking for nerfs: Shut up. Now that I have your attention, think about what you're asking for. The average player doesn't actually enjoy fighting death with every decision, and being killed for not being psychic. This game is difficult enough already, right out of the box. It's so difficult, as a matter of fact, that less than 50% of players have the "Bed and Bath" achievement for having a toilet, a sink, and one bed for each dupe... And that's the achievement with the highest percentage of player acquisition, despite the fact that those things can all be accomplished before downtime on the first cycle. So instead of expecting everyone else to play the game how *you* want to play it, perhaps you can just mod your own game into whatever personal hell you think is appropriate, and let everyone else play the way *they* want to. Barring that, I challenge you to make your own survival horror game and make it as frustratingly difficult as you want; if you want a hyper-complex misery simulator, make one. I, for one, play games to unwind. To relax. I might like a game mode where surviving indefinitely is the default, even if you do absolutely nothing after spawning in. Does that sound fun to you? No? Then you play your game, and I'll play mine.

Is there a reason for having two grooming stations in the feeding ranch? You mentioned for the other ranch that one grooming station can support 32 critters but you're only keeping 12 in the feeding ranch. Is it mainly so you can expand later on or am I missing something? Also, I've been playing around with your design and was able to cut out the middle section and slap the steam turbine right on top of the ranch by putting the door vertically (with the bottom of the door sticking into the corner of the ranch). This seems to prevent regolith being vomited outside of the ranch. Also maybe worth noting is that you can bypass the use of the conveyor shutoff and just run your eggs through your bottom-left dropoff first and control it with the critter sensor. Anyway, great tutorial. I learned a lot.

Starvation ranching really needs to be nerfed. And shove voles could use a nerf in general. The food system is already unbalanced as it is with agriculture being too unattractive compared to easy BBQ.
