i only use the old style throw out bearings. don't change it

Hi, many thanks for this. It's one of the many tasks that keeps me pondering in the small hours. I have only done some wiring in the gazebo due to the cold weather but this will spur me on .

I fully understand the reluctance in this weather. I am spending less time in the garage at the moment, seem to feel the cold much more nowadays!

Those old style throw out bearing are basically indestructible... and are arguably better than the new ones... and there is no clip holding the shaft into the bearing on the old style...
@oldnutsgarage3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think I will stick with what I have plus it is probably genuine unlike the replacement kits ( and it costs less ).

The joy of old bikes. More opinions than parts... Smart move to open it up to make sure you've not missed something potentially lethal. Keep well, Mark.

Cheers Bill, my thoughts exactly, I did not want the chance of random bits floating about in the gearbox!

This oil. I use redline shock proff oil on all my harley. My wide glide 83 is like a cat in the gears... I like redline products. Regards from Norway and I like your channel 🎉👍. This oil is like ketchup....

You have the good one. a lot better then the later ones.
@oldnutsgarage3 жыл бұрын
I was told that these early ones were indestructible so I decided against putting in the later type. Thanks for watching!

Oh by the way I have enjoyed your 2cv experiences. I have an Acadiane with a BMW 1100 engine and Quaife lsd, It goes quite well!

Wow! That sounds amazing, must be an absolute beast. I had an Acadiane, completely stock but I loved it, wish I could afford another one.

Hi, I own a 1982 shovelhead (its my profile pic) and i can pull out my clutch rod to i wouldn't worry about it. Im converting my primary drive to belt this winter to, I cant wait to see what its like. and yes its not cheap to do lol
@oldnutsgarage2 жыл бұрын
Nice bike Mike! Belt primary sounds like the way to go but my pockets are not that deep sadly. Thanks a lot for watching.

There is no clip for that older , and superior, throw out bearing. I thought that it took a different push rod, but I'm not 100% certain of that for your year bike.
@tommydemis90943 жыл бұрын
it also looks like you had a kicker on your bike at one time... part of the kicker gear is still installed on the main trans shaft (under the throw out bearing)... : )
@oldnutsgarage3 жыл бұрын
I do not know the history of the bike Tommy so it may well have had a kicker at one time. I did wonder what that cog was for, now I know !

Stay with the one you got! Its a much better beefier and unit that will stand up longer. You got lucky...the smaller ones suck
@oldnutsgarage Жыл бұрын
Yep, I stuck with it VK, some other people mentioned that the old type was much stronger, so glad I have got that one in there.
@whitefox30212 жыл бұрын
The later version of throw out bearing is inferior in strength. I am going back to the early style like you have because I keep having problems with the radial type bearing. Not to mention, there is a much higher chance of your transmission getting damaged if one of the little needle rollers were to fail and make it's way into the main part of the case through the crossover hole. The late style oil slinger is also notorious for spinning on the shaft which easily destroys it. Just happened to me... So moral of the story, you have the better "early style" throwout bearing set up!
@oldnutsgarage2 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned in the video it was not what I was expecting, but I am glad I have the early type in there. As you rightly say, it is a stronger design with less to go wrong so I will happily stick with it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment !

Wow I’ve only seen this type on bearing early gearbox’s even mine has the later type and it a 72 have to say I was wrong but interesting
@oldnutsgarage3 жыл бұрын
Hi Micheal, I must say it took me by surprise as I said in the video. I was expecting to see a slinger etc. especially as my parts book says post 1970 on the cover with no mention of the earlier bearing. Either way it appears these old ones are reliable so I will just stick with it.
@tommydemis90943 жыл бұрын
Oh but there IS oil in there.... but you know that now... LOL : )
@oldnutsgarage3 жыл бұрын
Yep, the oil had been draining for a long time so it took me by surprise.
@donrice80262 жыл бұрын
thats the better throw out bearing don t forget to put oil in tranny was ouy of oil happy trails
@oldnutsgarage2 жыл бұрын
I have been told these old ones are pretty bullet proof so I am happy. Trans full of heavy grade oil, maybe too heavy for UK we will see. Thanks for watching and keep safe !
