Oaxaca.

4: Those that lived here / made the toll and shimmering temples / in which men from near and far / come to worship he who has no name / and is above us….// They built the great white houses / in which the elders passed their wisdom…// UXMAL, the city which was made but could not be seen, / was the city of the spirits / that live in the air and the earth. // One day, this great city of UXMAL rose visible/ and was wonderful and proud,/ but since,/ the days of the Mayab changed…//

1: Without anyone’s instruction/ the indian knows many things.// The indian reads with his lingering glance/ that which is written in the stars that fly across the sky,/ that which remains hidden deep within the still water of the caves,/ that which is written in the humid dust of the savanna.// The indian’s ear heeds the wise birds’ voice/ when the sun goes down,/ and hears the whispers of the trees in the silence of the night,/ and the golden stones showered by the light of dawn.//
