I just don’t even agree with that because DT and O line are evenly matched up usually, unless it’s some freak of nature like Aaron Donald. The edge rushers, yes they’re faster but the tackle has usually more than 50 pounds on rushers and they’re still fast. These are pros we’re talking about, they’re all great athletes. It’s just O line is expected to hold their ground against a very strong fast man running full speed at them. That’s where the disadvantage comes in. That and they can’t hold. If they could hold, the offenses would be a video game.
@Apogee816

@@nickhamerlynck7919 thats valid. but i think the bigger emphasis is on the "expected to win 100% of the battles" even if they're against evenly matched opponents, O Line are STILL expected to win their matchup every time. CB: Hits the WR/TE. S: Hits the WR/TE but deeper. LB: Hits the RB, sometimes WR. OLB/EDGE: Hits the QB. DL: Push O-Line. This was excellent. DBs also get held to a similar unfair standard. They’ll do their job for 30 pass plays but will get killed online if they give up 2-3 memorable catches. Only difference is they can make up for it by forcing turnovers which linemen don’t get. Both positions also have to run backwards and laterally at the same speed of their opponent running forward

I'm not a betting man. But for a few weeks or so I tried to watch games as if I was placing a bet on them. I made sure to watch two teams I didn't care about outside the division of my favorite team so I wouldn't have any bias. I tried to account for all relevant variables and gave a numbered grading system for each team. Long story short, in most close games the most relevant variable came down to the discrepancy between the offensive and defensive lines of the teams. The talent discrepancy in the line is the first and most crucial variable to account for and will make or break a team's chances, and can only rarely be offset by star QB talent.

@@ShaunHensley personally would say technique and skill are different things. Skill helps with learning technique but isn’t the end be all. There’s a lot of average athletes playing DL/OL who make up for their lack of skill with intelligence and discipline. When you play something like WR/CB if you aren’t skilled you pretty much have no shot of making it in the NFL. Nobody is going to teach you to succeed at making plays or running past people that’s just a skill you’re either born with or not.
@michaelsullivan1052

There is a reason the OL is one of the most intelligent position groups in the NFL. The defense is throwing every scheme at you to beat you and humiliate you. Those guys have to work together and react together. There is so much happening so quickly. Watch a Quenton Nelson highlight reel and see the constant adjustments he makes in a play to make sure everyone gets blocked. Blitzes get picked up. Stunts get handled. How long to stay on a block and when to release and go next level.

I always respected offensive linemen (I played safety), since I knew they did important work and if they weren't functioning it was gonna be a long night, but I never really knew exactly what it is they did beyond being an O in the playbook, so this helped me see some of the technique and skill involved. I loved Pat showing his form and being evaluated by Stink!

I played defensive and offensive tackle in high school. I’ll never forget one day my high school went and did drills against another high school, I beat everyone of their offensive lineman in 1 on 1’s. As soon as we did full line play, they worked so well as a unit me and my other D lineman couldn’t get through. It was honestly super impressive. They weren’t the strongest or fastest but they worked extremely well as a unit.

I played both sides of the football in high school, RT and DE and I loved defense way more because it was less technical and I could just smash into people. Offensive line is incredibly hard, you have to balance yourself and create leverage to push the defense but while you’re doing that you have to have good hand placement and you’re also dealing with dudes who are a minimum of 250lbs. Throw in knowing the offensive plays and how defenses react to alignments both on strategy and skill level. It goes a long way to ensuring you make the right blocks and how. I didn't see the disrespect you mentioned. he was clearly a top 3 tackle for about 6 or 7 years but the last 4 seasons have been marred by missed games, injuries and lower production...that is the facts speaking, not and subjective thoughts, just the facts. As far as all-time great he is not in the group headed my Munoz , Hannah and a very few others in my opinion. I played D-1 O-line and kinda know the greats when I see them.

@@lennyj2080 never once did I mention him being “an all time great.” Maybe go back and read the original comment.

@@rotcehlobo8311 Hey Lobo...I was almost halfway agreeing that he was dominant, but mentioned facts pertaining to the lack of playing time over the last four seasons. The guy was great for 6 seasons....not any longer. Few even do that many years.

As an undersized lineman when I played during school, I had to focus on skill and techniques to even have a chance. You not only have to worry about who you have to block, but those next to you, and where the play is going so you know who to help or who can help you. On offense, besides the QB, the lineman need to be the smartest(football wise) out there.
