Yes only the left counts. My mother hates it when I do it. But I thought as a kid that it was so cool when Spock did it, I learned how. I'm better at it on the left but I can do both. Funnily I'm better at doing the Vulcan salute with my left hand too and yet I'm right handed.

To finish Andy's thought, to the best of my knowledge, what historians currently think were the hand signals in gladiatorial games were: Thumbs up representing swords towards heaven, meaning kill the guy. Thumb held in fist in the opposite hand representing swords sheathed, meaning spare the guy. Of course gladiator deaths in the games were very rare, as it makes little sense to invest thousands of denarii into training, equipping, housing, and feeding a gladiator if he's just going to die almost immediately. Most of the time, the people being killed in the arena were criminals, rebels, and prisoners of war.

I grew up in the American south, in an area with a lot of hunters and responsible gun owners. I learned how to shoot in the Scouts and for the longest time as a teen my friends and I played Military Simulation airsoft; not pro or anything, but we had several acres of woods and cheap military surplus gear, I even had a homemade ghillie suit. Honestly learning from a young age to be responsible with and how to properly operate a firearm is integral to any society that has firearms in it; which is almost all of them at this point, at least in my opinion. Since they're going to be around, we might as well make sure that safety and respect for the power of a gun are ingrained in us.

To finish what Andy was saying, the thumb up gesture was not actually part of the entire gladiator thing. Instead of thumb up, it was a throat slashing gesture with the thumb. The emperor would either do thumb down or throat slash. Thumb down meant "No do not kill" and throat slash obviously meant "Yes kill him". To be honest a good majority of the time a gladiator was spared because its hard to replace a trained gladiator constantly, though some emperors obviously killed more often.

This gives me an idea. Imagine golf, but it takes place in a massive outdoors obstacle course, and all the players have paintball rifles. Every time someone gets hit, it adds five strokes to their golf score card, and forces them to walk back to a respawn point.

from some documentary which may or may not have been right i've heard that the thumbs up was actually a call to continue fighting, the thumb representing a sword, and it was either a closed fist or a horizontal thumb for them to stop, or lay down their swords.

What the golf carts are good for, is when you've suddenly realized you've dallied a bit too long, the storm is closing in and there is a vehicle, that moves far faster than you do running, right in front of you. (personal experience. Lol)

Dang it! Andy didn't get to finish! But for those curious... The idea is that a thumbs down means throw down your sword and a thumbs up is approval to kill. The exact sign to kill is a bit disputed. Some say the thumb down into a fist means kill, others say the thumb bent back is to kill, but thumbs down actually means to spare someone.

historians all tend to agree that the depiction of the thumbs up or down to decide the fate of a gladiator is incorrect, although they do not know exactly how it was done the common census is that they waved their thumbs about randomly or hid their thumbs in their fist, and the decision made by the emperor is largely incorrect as it was in fact usually a popularity vote from the audience that decided the fate of the gladiators.

Either way, gladiators were rarely executed or in fact killed (estimates are about 1 in 10, usually due to an accident), since they were expensive. Think about trying to maintain a modern day wrestler, healthcare, training, equipment, etc. Now imagine having to OWN them, and paying all that. Now imagine how pissed you would be if they got killed. Which is why they used weapons like nets, etc, specifically trained to subdue the opponent without harming them too much and certainly not killing them.
