astro bot rescue mission is frikking great, i played it at cambridge computer museum. the two player mode where someone is a giant green monster nutting the buildings (with headset) and the other player is the little astro bot chucking objects at you (tv screen) is so much fun, and a really inventive way of having 2 player. loved it!!

Not only is it normal to see things when you focus on the inside of your eyelids but there is a visualization/imagination developing technique where you engage that effect and verbalize what you're seeing as your seeing it to help your mind's visualizions and thoughts line up more accurately.

That whole "Tetris effect" or "sudoku effect" thing is actually quite common with pretty much anything that involves non-real world perception. So pretty much any video game, even an extremely realistic-looking one, can create a similar effect. The most potent I've ever felt it is after I've powered through any kind of top-down strategy sim, so for example a Civ game or, the most I've ever felt it, after I played Cities Skylines for quite a while (I think the constant small moving parts on the street-level were playing a role in it too). After I played Skylines for a few hours straight I would perceive stuff from a slanted aerial view when I closed my eyes.

I gotchu Luke. As a kid my parents would tell me if I just closed my eyes I'd fall asleep. I'd just lay there watching as the colours came up, then became shapes, for hours. Suffice to say, we came up with another go-to-sleep approach... But I had a bloodied tooth so I'd even push on my closed eyes to get brighter colours. Hrm. I don't... Think... Seeing stuff when closing one's eyes is actually the brain compensating for the lack of sensory input. They once conducted an experiment where the participants had to put on a suit, goggles and ear muffs that inhibited any sensory input. After a while they started hallucinating and were forced to call of the experiment early because they were going insane. Scary stuff...
