Quick show & tell video about two Cattleya species. I discuss C. warscewiczii and some of the culture problems that I believe I've overcome. I also show blooms on two young C. tigrina and compare a first bloom with a second blooming plant.

Thanks for another informative video. C. warscewiczii is the only cattleya that would grow for me for many years here in Holland. It was able to tolerate high humidity and a lot of moisture in my greenhouse, but now I switched to warmer temps and drier sunny Winter (thanks for the tips in your other videos!) in an attempt to also grow the others. C. warscewiczii also wants a lot of light here, but that is a lot less than Texas sun for sure!

Your C. tigrina look lovely. Both of them. Sure, the first time bloomer has a bit of weirdness to the flower, but next year will be better. I for one don't mind the ruffling. As for the color of the possible polyploid - while some may not like that intense of spotting (so that the spots merge into blobs), I suspect as a parent into a complex hybrid it's offspring will have wonderfully colored flowers.

@@SVKLOrchids That’s great! I hope they grow very fast! I would really like to see those flowers! My cattleya had a strange behavior because the bulb where the flower is growing is one that grow in last November . After that the bulb grew another two new bulbs but they didn’t develop a flower sheath , but anyway I’m happy because a bud is developing finally . I change many things in my growing conditions , but the one thing that was very important in my case , was the lack of water and humidity that cause me many problems to make develop the pseudobulb , and I decided to change my growing conditions because of the video you post about cattleya problems. @@SVKLOrchids I have my orchid in volcanic stone only and in a clay pot, since humidity is low , I keep it in a plastic pot , when I water I let a small quantity of water in it . It was growing inside the apartment but in April I took it outside and after two months it started to develop a bud and it begun to rain too outside. It has been a month with constant rains and it is happy the roots are ok , that’s why I believe she needs a lot of water , If I changed her in a more retentive media I couldn’t let her outside in the rain, here the water is hard , that’s why I hesitate.

Hi, Stephen! Tell me about the crazy weather! We're bracing for our first major storm of the hurricane season down here. I think it's going to be another busy year this time around. Thanks for helping me correctly pronounce C. warsewiczii's name, too -- it has always been a mouthful for me for some reason 🤪. I would definitely love to add a Tigrina to my collection! SVO has a few selections right now but they're all labelled as C. leopoldii. Does that mean if I get one, I'll essentially have a Tigrina like yours? Also, I have 50% of my catts potted in baskets with the others in plastic pots. I use several large plastic pots (with holes) for my big cymbidiums. Would such a pot work with a Tigrina?
@SVKLOrchids
@SVKLOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
I wish you luck with the upcoming storm!! Hopefully it stays small. Cattleya leopoldii is the same as tigrina, so purchasing that from Fred would get you similar looking flowers. As long as the roots dry in a day or two, the pot shouldn't make much of a difference. I would recommend larger media in a plastic pot since it doesn't breath as much as a basket.

@@SVKLOrchids It does look like Elsa is weakening after all. My area could still get some pretty gusty winds though. So, just in case, I'm ready to move my plants into their safe space. Guess what? A new tigrina is on the way! I took your advice and I have the perfect pot, media and place for her. According to my husband, though, you've become a bad influence on me. I couldn't resist adding another catesetum to my SVO order and he just shook his head. Now he calls me his crazy cat lady AND confirmed orchid addict, lol! Thanks, Stephen 😀

Hmm, I have my warscewiczii in quite bright light (full sun until around 11, under 40% shade until late afternoon, then the sun swoops back in). I do need to attach a pot to the mount as soon as roots start because they just shrivel and die if they hang in the air and I need to to produce A LOT more roots. The one thing Chadwick notes is to keep it dry until the new growth is at least 4 inches. I'm not sure you or I could do that as they would shrivel away in the heat I think. But that "starve" period he says drives it to produce a large cluster of blooms so next year I may try withholding water (assuming we don't get rain that is) to see if I get more blooms.

I have a young plant that is growing well and is called Catttleya Guttata. Is it the same? Thanks for video but just one small thing... your audience is from all over the world and you mention the names of local growers, which is fine but I, for example, live in Portugal, so haven't a clue where they are. But once again thanks and that tigrina is spectacular.
@SVKLOrchids
@SVKLOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
Cattleya guttata is a separate species, but they do look similar! Also, guttata grows much larger than tigrina. Sunset Valley Orchids is probably one of the most famous nurseries on the planet right now! I believe they sell to Europe regularly.

Regarding climate change: the last time I looked at output from long range climate models, the consensus appears to be that the south-eastern part of the US will see increasing precipitation throughout the 21st century. Coincident with that will be temperature rises much less than in other parts of the US (because rain storms lower temperatures.) However, I don't remember TX being in that category. Most of the western US will see ever warmer temps, and with that more drought (as indeed this year.)

Actually, we just published a paper in Nature Geosciences (June 2021) that reconstructed climate in the southern Great Plains using stalagmites dated to approximately 30k years ago. Turns out a hotter Texas is a wetter, more storm filled Texas. Here’s a press release: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/06/210622162923.htm

@dickusmaxximun8126
@dickusmaxximun8126 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on your medium. If you do strait perlite, or hydroton, a plastic pot is better. If you have a Dowiana, or a Violacea, which are clowns regarding wet roots in winter, a clay pot is better. The more organic your medium, the more clay. However, if you plant the orchid when it is rooting, the pot and the media are irrelevant. The roots will adapt to the medium, which can be either strait water, or rocks.

I have C Warscewiczii alba 'Leo Holguin'. It hasn't produced any new pseudobulbs in a little over a year. The plant came with some snails so I repotted it at a less than optimal time to get rid of them. It does have visible root growth and the existing pseudobulbs seem fine. I was giving it too much light but I have moved it so it gets a bit less light. The leaves have greened up some. My other Warscewiczii are producing new top growth. Do you think the plant is just in recovery mode after the repot? I think Leo Holguin has Firmin Lambeau in its background. I'm not sure if it's a sib cross or selfing. Do you know?
@SVKLOrchids
@SVKLOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t recall the background on Leo Holguin, but I believe Art Chadwick discusses it in his article, which is available online for free if you want to check it out. I think the recovering plant should have starting growing by now. Is it getting natural sunlight? Or is it under lights that are changing duration during the year?
