For the person having problems with a bassy Katana - try doing a factory reset (very easy, takes a few seconds) to make sure it's not holding on to an old EQ setting or something, and make sure to connect it to your computer and open up Boss Tone Studio so you can access all of the EQ options (and all of the extra effects and controls). Have never had any issue with any of Katanas being too bassy. If anything, have to work to tame the high end sometimes.

Do you think it's possible to get good album worthy tones on pedals alone? Amplifiers are cool and all that but they're damn expensive. Can you get a good tone by running a distortion / preamp pedal into a power amp like the TC 44 magnum with an eq pedal?

Tone wood. Not to beat a dead horse. I have a 72 SG, (love it) I used to have an LP (that left with a duchy x). Same pickups same strings. Different sounds? Not the “tone” of the woods just the density. The SG is soft mahogany, the LP layered maple. Completely different sound. Harder wood more SUSTAIN not different tone. Tod Rungren played an aluminum guitar that sounded wicked cool, razor sharp. Sustain for miles.

Hey Brick. I was bullied in school a lot. It made me feel so worthless and its a feeling I've carried for a lot of my life, not intentionally just a result of mental scaring i guess. Anyway now that I've been an adult for quite some time, almost 40. I've had a chance to see people who were bullies in school, grow into kind, caring adults. I think its important to remember too, that a lot of problem children are born into problem environments. The ones who weren't, were just children at the time who were unlikely to be aware of the full extent their bullying was doing, just for brownie points with their friends. Bulling is horrible and it can destroy young children's minds and social abilities, it should be taken much more seriously by a lot of schools. But maybe we shouldn't hold anything against them as they were just children with lots to learn. So glad to know you went on to overcome it, and now enjoy your success 😃

my opinion is that bedroom tone tends to be sounding scooped, less so on a recording. But you'd probably want more pronounced mids on live settings. On the gain settings, you might want more gain on bedroom and live tone but you definitely want less on a recording.

If collapsed to mono (or watch a video about it on a phone) it will sound phase-y and horrible. Mono is phase perfect as is stereo mode, These two modes are for mixing, and proper double tracking. 👍 Which is what you did in your mix. Appreciate the video. I’ll miss the intros 😆 I loved em. I'd love to see your take on bullying. I think it could be really helpful. I'm 57 now, and still have nightmares about my high school experiences. I was fat and nerdy and had the social skills of a dead rat, and was constantly harassed from middle school through my freshman year of high school. I hung out in the German room because they had a TRS-80 computer and all my D&D friends were taking German too (except for Kent, who took French but we didn't hold that against him). Yes, I was a walking cringefest of reasons to get bullied and picked on. In my sophomore year, I stopped being the target. Something happened over the summer that I still don't quite understand, but in 10th grade I just wasn't putting up with anyone's bullshit. Still hanging out in literally the least cool room at school, with literally the most uncool people imaginable. It just stopped somehow. There was no theme music Rocky Balboa Karate Kid moment of breakthrough and revelation. I didn't stand up to the bullies. I didn't fight my way to glory and win the respect of anyone. I just had a different attitude and as if by magic, the bullies ignored me and picked on other kids. I'd like to say I then became the hero and protected the other victims, but that wasn't what happened. I'm still pretty fucked up by it all, though. Parents, school faculty, adults in general have the wrong fucking idea. It does not build character. It does not make you stronger. It is not "boys will be boys". It's monumentally fucked up and should not be tolerated, anywhere, by any person with an ounce of compassion. It ruins peoples' lives and takes the social outcasts and pushes them even farther away from having a normal life.

To the guy that said he wouldn't be "caught dead" on stage with a cheap guitar, you better have the chops to back that up. The majority of the audience doesn't give a shit about whether you're playing a Gibson or an Epiphone. They only care about the music and the performance. I've done gigs with a partscaster and a Katana, and I've done gigs with a PRS through an EVH head and cab. The only ones judging you on your equipment are other guitar players. Good luck.

+1 for a video on creating tone for the mix. I think professionals forget that what is obvious to them is not obvious to everyone else. To most people, it's "obvious" that you would always want to have the best tone you can. It's the "garbage in/garbage out" concept. To put a "bad" tone into a mix seems counterintuitive.

As for cheap import instruments and not wanting to be seen with one - I've commented on the subject several times but now I can offer a fresh personal perspective. I've just bought a made in Indonesia Sterling Ray SUB 5 and I'm very pleased with it. The fretwork is very good, the overall construction feels solid and that Stingray tone (the Sterling Ray being the cheaper version of the Stingray) is right there. Yes, the finish on the neck feels cheap, the nut is a crude piece of plastic (gonna replace it some time in the future) but overall, it's a good bass with some really nice sound. I bought it as a backup for my beloved Alembic Essence 5 but I'm so satisfied with it I'm gonna gig the fuck out of that thing, zero fucks given. I'm not gonna be worried someone steals or damages it while it's been an issue for me with the Alembic. And if someone has a problem it's not a "real" Musicman bass, it's their problem, not mine. Me, I'm happy with the SUB.

Hey Glenn, long time subscriber, first time commenter. First off, in 2019, I had the pleasure of sharing a meal with you and some other KZbinrs at Monell’s in Nashville at Summer NAMM. For as loud and blunt as you are on your channel, you couldn’t have been a cooler nicer guy in person. Secondly is my question, have you ever tried Warehouse Giitar Speakers out of Paduka, Kentucky? Their version on V30’s and Greenbacks are amazing. Also, what are your thoughts on Splawn amps. Later bruv….

This is why whenever I post drum videos, I always leave my mistakes in. Do I know I am a good Drummer and i can nail a song in studio with enough takes? Yeah. Do i mess up a bunch? All the time dude, I'm human.

Bullying is something that can make or break someone's character. I think there is something interesting in Metal kids almost choosing to accept the grief they're gonna take for what they listen to, what they wear and style their hair. I think this choice to wear your heart on your sleave knowing your going to be a pariah or target is the reason so many metal heads can deal with abuse with a smile on their face.

I would honestly really like a video on guitar tones for recording vs tones when playing live/by yourself! I have always been a bedroom guitarist with limited live experience, but I am new to recording and would love to know more! Thanks Glenn!

8:08 I myself tend to cut any guitar-only passages to a different track to let the guitar players' "insanely killer" tones (i.e. gain at 11, zero mids, out of control lows, etc) that they worked so hard to achieve and are so proud of shine, then when the rest of the band kicks in it switches over to a track dialed to the tone that the song actually needs, they rarely notice and everyone is happy.

I know this is a studio channel but id love to see an episode on the differences between studio sound and live sound. I am a jack of all trades musician who plays 8 different instruments and at least as many genres of music. I also run live sound pretty well and would like to see more bands learn a thing or two about actually sounding good for the live audience... Who knows, it might actually help them sell an album Been watching for years and truly appreciate the hard work you put in. You have 100% earned your following here.

I totally agree about practice vs. mix tones. The tones I'm using in my latest project sound like absolute shit when isolated (like surprisingly bad, no way I'd ever use them for solo practice), but in the full mix with 2 guitars in stereo it sounds thick and full and heavy. Hell, I'm pretty sure you're the one who drilled this concept into my head, Glenn. But yeah, I encourage any doubters to try it themselves.

It amazes me how many comments you still get from Gibson apologists. This may have become the largest accidental experiment in self-ownership ever, lol. It is sort of a window into how context seems to be lost these days in many aspects of life. It is not that hard to get. Paying epic boatloads of money for a legacy brand that delivers horrible quality control is not a good thing. Go figure. My hunk of wood and magnets is better than yours because name and price. You almost have to add, nah nah nah nah nah, booger head. It is that juvenile.

I love hearing the human part of music, mistakes in music is what makes it human. That's why even in shit like DragonForce they left a guitar string breaking on the guitar because it sounded cool, Master of Puppets has arguably one of the most popular Metal guitar solos of all time and that one literally has Kirk falling off the fretboard. Mistakes aren't inherently bad, you just gotta learn how to make them sound good.

Hey Glenn I just bought a Peavey valve king 112 combo on eBay it was dirt cheap but the speaker in it is garbage, which Jensen speaker would you recommend for high gain in that amp ?

Ever notice how the majority of people who leave hate comments or bold statements never have an avatar for their accounts? I reviewed a budget guitar over on my channel and this guy felt the need to tell me not to review it with a Kemper and I should use an average amp. These days even an average amp or a free plugin sounds great. Most of the tone is the speaker. If it sounded dead with the Kemper then I know its lacking. I told him the facts and if he wants to see one reviewed with an average amp, make the video and I guess sound average for everyone (some folks make amazing sounds with cheap stuff). Then again those guys never respond back nor will they make the video they want to see. Guess If by some miracle he makes it, I will watch it but we know it won't happen.
