SHRED SHOW'S ON VACATION! See you next week, Saturday the 23rd.
The McCoy Nugget is a surfboard that stands out from most of what we feature on Shred Show. It's an interesting example of a creative hull shape, and a unique option for surfers who want a lot of volume in a board.

I like the clear, understandable and fast delivery of accurate information here by this guy. I had a 6"5' custom nugget and asked Jeff to just make sure it was under 3 inches thick. He made it 2" 15/16' of an inch. The cheeky bugger lol.😁🥰 I found mine to skip or pop out in powerful surf. Maybe my surfing however on a traditional thruster I never had this problem. Top quality workmanship in all McCoy's boards.

Ive had many boards over any years, probably 1 of the first half dozen thrusters built by Simon Anderson! Wish Id kept that one. As ive got older I moved to a 9'6", im a big guy! Mals are Mals and it is fun in its own way. recently i bought a 8' Big Guy nugget, what a revelation! My goodness, its as close to short boarding as I am ever going to get to! So, im back buying a smaller nugget, it has so much volume and not being a board designer I just know it works, ive fallen back in love with surfing again! Thanks Geoff!

I have owned two McCoy Nuggets. I rode my 6'1 x 20 x 2 7/8 Nugget almost exclusively for close to a year, pretty standard dimensions for a board that size shaped by Geoff McCoy. The rocker, rail shape and loaded dome work surprisingly well on steep waves. I found the Nugget to actually go well in the tube and made steep drops easy. They are fun boards, easy to paddle and have their place. They are not very light and need a good wall to get going. Personally, I feel it is a board I would only ride sometimes. I have since sold my McCoys. I feel they are great boards for beginner or intermediate surfers. If you ride them short enough they can still be ripped on if the surf is good but I found the tail just too wide and too thick making it hard to sink a rail even though I do consider my self a backfoot surfer. I felt the nugget held me back in my ability to punch out as many turns as possible on a wave and found it much harder to do big snaps, tail slides and big powerful turns than the high volume boards I am currently ridding. Though the boards I ride currently are not quite as high volume as the Nugget they are pretty close (maybe 15% less volume approx) and still easy enough to paddle, especially the ones in epoxy. I prefer the thickness in my boards to tapper and thin out more in the tail and not have quite as much width, overall area and chunkyness in the tail in my current high volume boards which allow them to be turned much harder and more radically than the Nugget. I still consider the Nugget a great board and has its place for beginners to intermediates or surfers wanting a real flowing kind of ride without being overly snappy or radical. It's a board that paddles and catches waves very well too. Just my 2 cents...

SurfboardShredShow I have a 5'10 Firewire Potatonator at 37 litres which is still fairly chunky in the tail though not as much as the nugget and I find it much more responsive than the nugget in smaller waves, a 5'11 Meyerhoffer Pill @ 35 litres (my favorite board at the moment, love it, great all rounder for most conditions between 1-4 foot, not the Meyhoffer 'horse pill' thats a different beast!) a 5'8" x 22.25 x 2 7/8 'Bourton Booty' quad by Murray Bourton for junk surf, its got mini simmons DNA but more modern, it pulls in and thins out ALOT in the tail and you can actually throw it around and even go vert on it and is about 38.5 litres in PU with a nose like a mal (the only board I currently ride in PU) a 6'2 Diverse 'Racing Mullet' @ 36.5 litres for when the waves get good, which has pulled in and foiled out tail which I ride when the surf is good and a bit bigger (think Rusty Slayer outline with a bit more width overall) and lastly a 6'0 Firewire Dominator @ 35 litres. I also recently sold a 6'0 Firewire Spitfire @ 35 litres and that is also one of my favorite boards which I may get again one day. I mostly ride them as quads but the Dom and Racing Mullet are good either as a quad or thruster. Growing up on thrusters I initially did not like quads, it took me a while to get the feel of it but now I mostly ride quads except in certain conditions.

+Create-A-Vibe I consider a Geoff McCoy surfboard the best board ever and it has its place for the most highly advanced to beginner surfers. I am a very good surfer and have had my best surfs on them. The tail is not too wide and thick to turn. I have done my tightest most incredible turns on small McCoys, Medium more narrow McCoys, on long wide thick McCoys, and a long very very wide Astron Zot single fin with full rail turns and a variety of other types of turns, with out losing speed. I've done fins out the back tail slides and airs on them too, if you like that kind of stuff and understand how to do them and have the skill. Delay the top turn / snap = fins out the back. The best part about the board is you will never catch a rail, or pearl your nose, on a late steep drop calmly stay over the board even if it's airborn and when you reconnect, the board will keep going down the line, slotting it's self in the best part of the pocket or high enough on the wave face, for making the wave with out loosing the least bit of control or speed or accelerating out from under your feet. The landing is so steady it feels like you are landing on the flat ground. But, that hardly happens because the board will catch the wave so early and take a high line (that's how you make waves and barrels). You see all these surfers and the pros dragging both arms, dragging their butts, working so hard to stay high on the wave in the barrels, and people comment on how cool that is when in fact it is ugly, because their boards want to stay at the bottom of the wave and even go straight to shore. But, the McCoy will want to keep you in the barrel, or take a high line, or go down the line, even if you are a novice, but if you are a good surfer you will make waves and sections that others can't especially on single fins like the Astron Zot. And to get speed, you won't be hopping up and down like a crazy rabid rabbit. WHen It comes to surfing small to medium waves I've done it all when it comes to airs and tails slides, throwing myself up into sections on thin concaved out non-McCoys. But, when I got into the McCoy I did bottom turns around impossibly long sections, searing high speed carves that started out as a vertical top turn and it keeps turning without loosing speed and it kept carving around all the way back to a vertical foam bash in one single movement lightning fast,( and you think, this rail is so thick and round how did it do that) the myth that thin rails do it better is total B.S.. and to enter a turn like that and perform it at FULL Speed, something a non-McCoy will not do in that way, with that quality. Up side down back side top turns and foam drifts on big white water. But, the best of all is when you are on a good punchy wave that is fast and hollow, the board feels like it is hovering above the water, like on a flying saucer, in perfect smooth control, it feels like you are flying. Some of the stuff they say about displacement hulls and how they feel, (A McCoy is not a displacement hull its 1000 times better and I've had 3 Greg Liddles) are exaggerations, and what you feel on a McCoy, especially the single fin Astron Zot, is incredible when it gets overhead and fast and steep. With a single fin, on a fast steep hollow powerful wave, the sensations are ineffable. Incredible, like you are flying above the surface of the water on a jet powered bar of soap in perfectly smooth control. Every other board in the world is a total piece of crap compared to a McCoy. The wider and thicker and in single Fin you can get the better. The Gull Wing Fin is the only way to go.

I think the redbull decade series is awesome they've been doing things with adrenaline junkies like Travis Pastrana and the Nitro crew for years. I'm glad to see them bring it more to the surfing world and teaching the history and culture of the surfing and surfboards throughout the years and how much it has changed rather than just JB 2.0. Because, I think surfing can be just as gnarly and dangerous as the other action sport. This is an amazing opportunity for people to learn something they don't know about surfing. That's why I love watching your show I learn something new every time I watch one.

Hey mate, on a scale of 1 to 10 my skills and ability would be around a 5/6. I live an hrs from the ocean so i only surf when I'm on day's off. I'm 42yrs young too and now ride firewire surfboards, 1 being 40ltrs and the other 38ltrs. I bought, rode then sold the 6'1 Nugget. Great board, from memory i think it was around the 40ltrs mark or there abouts. That may be a better option, smooth, fast and responsive.

Hello Chris, great video about the Geoff McCoy Nugget. I just rang Geoff and told him to put this video on his home page as it does a good explanation to all the finer points of the Nugget. I am the guy in the video link. The nuggets I ride are 6'6", 7'0", 7'6", 8'2"and a 8'6" gun that has a 16'1/2" tail. Depending on the size and also the shape of the waves I ride all the boards regularly depending how I feel. After working hard for a couple of days, the waves might suit the 6'6" but I will take out the 7'0" to be out in the surf catching waves without struggling. In Indo I ride the smallest board I can. When the waves are getting bigger and I am finding it harder to catch waves I go in and get the bigger boards. Recently I rode the 6'6", 7'0"and 7'6" all in one day as the swell was building all day. The great thing about Geoff’s boards is the loaded dome being consistent throughout the different sized boards enables you to change boards and they feel the same. I have sold at least 40 boards for Geoff just by giving guys a go of mine when we are surfing together.

My first Nugget was back in 2005, 6'2, 3 inches thick. For reference I am 5'8 and at that time weighed 170! Heavy for me, which is one of the reasons I got a Nugget. No one around here was riding these back than and I searched for months for the right board, found the Nugget on Geoffs site but I am in SoCal so I found Greg Pautsch and got him to shape me one. I could have gone much smaller but decided on the 6'2 cause I wanted maximum float. It took awhile to get used to but I had the most fun on that board, road it till it delaminated to death. It worked in everything from 1 foot 56th Newps to solid Lowers to 1 foot overheard Shipwrecks in Cabo. I now have a 5'5 Nugget by GP...it doesnt get ridden as much as the 6'2 did but these boards are special and if you can get a Geoff shaped Nugget, do it! They give you a feeling in surfing like no other board, but there is a learning curve because you have to put more pressure on your back foot than other boards. The solid feeling you can get when your locked into this board is amazing!

Geoff McCoy is the man! I have been a McCoy convert after getting back in the water at 40. His boards are designed to catch waves easily and give the rider control. They sure do that!! Help with the Goldy crowds and come into their own in the Mentawais. For me, the most fun I can have in the surf is on a McCoy which is why I now have a 5'9", 6'0" & 6'4". Best boards I have ever had...and I can't surf anywhere near as good as Cheyne, I am Joe Average and they make surfing easier and a whole lot more fun.

I have 2 Nuggets. The 1st was the 6'4" x 20.5 x 2 7/8ths, a whole chunk of foam, I am 6'0" - but it sure got me surfing again. I have since gotten the 6'0" x 21.75 x 3" Astron Zot single fin (which I think I may have had my best wave on) and the 5'9" x 20 x 2 7/8 Nugget. Both Nuggets are thrusters. You are right about Geoff putting you on a big one to start - but he knows what he is talking about. Foam is your friend :) The 5'9" is the smallest board I have owned and I couldn't go that small on a non-McCoy

After owning many boards, maybe 50 and with age I had moved to a 9’6” mal and that was to be my surfing future. Then I got a 8’ nugget, wow, what a board it totally changed my surfing, massive volume so I could catch and ride waves but even at 8’ you turn it more like a short board, Ive now purchased a 7’ which is pretty short for me at 6’4” and just under 100Kg! I’m now riding better than in my 30s. The nugget is unlike any other board I have ever ridden and I believe it would be a great board for any, maybe the exception of those putting boards hard on a rail

Great review! I've got 3 of Geoffs boards: 7'1" Single fin all round nugget, a thruster 7'1" and an 8'2" semi gun single. It's back foot all the way (more so with the singles) takes a bit of getting used to but the 8'2" I rode at 10+ Uluwatu and I still can remember every turn - if ever you have an opportunity to give one of these boards a crack, leap at it!

Personally, I'm stoked on the red bull signature series. I think it captures the true meaning of surfing which is having fun. All those pros are thrown a board unlike one they've ever surfed and are forced to try and figure it out. If you've ever been surfing with your friends and swapped boards with them, perhaps going from a shortboard to a retro for the first time, you would know that it most always puts a smile on your face. Even if you don't necessarily love the feel of a retro fish under your feet, it feels great to be figuring out new things and being, in a sense, a beginner again with your buds. That is exactly what they've done with red bull signature series. They are giving pros boards that turn them into beginners again, and they are fucking loving it

Had the 7'0 x 21.5" x 3" for about 5 years. Easiest board I've ever ridden. Go back to this when I'm in the mood for something super easy to ride or when it gets bigger and I feel like I need the confidence to get into a wave super early i.e. 6ft plus on the heavier side of things! The 6'6 x 21.5" x 3" is a custom I had made on consultation with Geoff about a year ago (after a flirtation with Firewires - had 6'0 and 6'6 dominators. Broke one of these and went back to my McCoy for a few surfs and had so much fun I called Geoff re: a custom nugget.) It took longer to get the technique with this one but now I ride this almost exclusively. A true all rounder. Both, despite their volume are super responsive to turn and if you're in the right spot on the board literally pivot on the tail. They are a different sensation for sure but on the nuggets I catch more waves, have more fun, surf waves longer and make more sections than others on more traditional boards and I think they have made me a better surfer. No matter what else I try now - when I go back to the McCoy its better!

shred show, great job on explaining the loaded dome, I've been trying to picture the description of it and how it works, now I have a better idea. I have more questions, so bear with me: can you give us your impressions and experiences with the 'loaded dome'? where did you get the specimen that you have in your hands? It looked light, so I'm guessing it's not from australia? as i iunderstand it, mccoys were glassed heavy to give it momentum, right? where can i check out a nugget like the one shown, since mr. mccoy doesn't send his boards over here? any input on the surftech nuggets? is the loaded dome faithfully recreated? thanks, I've always wanted to try a nugget.. love your show, keep them coming Merry Christmas Stay Safe!!

I've got seven of these that Geoff has made for me over the last 20 years, best boards on the planet! Yes I do have other boards that I enjoy surfing but the Nuggets are just something magical. You can buy them from "the surfboard agency" anywhere in the world...

I think the red bull decades thing is sick because of how well current surfers are surfing boards that were made a while ago

Despite the excess for the production of it all, I like the idea. It reminds me of a contest I saw advertised within the last couple years, where the surfers got a randomly chosen board.

I think the series is rad. Funny how the surfers felt bad waxing those classics up to surf on waist high waves over shallow reef

I've been surfing for a little while now and I want to trade my bic 7'9 in for something more fun. I'm a big guy (almost 2 meters tall and 100kg) so I know I need lots of volume. Would this board be something for me? I'm looking at the 7'2 version. If not, what else should I get?

that is one ugly board, but thumbs up for keeping the show diverse and explaining the advantages of this board. I want to say it reminds me of 70s era single fins, but then there's that tail....
@SurfboardShredShow
@SurfboardShredShow 10 жыл бұрын
You're nailing it. These Nugget boards that Geoff makes came from his earlier designs in the late 70's that were single fins with unusually wide tails.

Just wonderful, I have been researching "up for surfing" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Feyvid Surfers Semitist - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.
