This show is a great proof of concept. Two big things for me stand out so far: 1. I agree with other commenters, that there should be a unified tone (perhaps the guest judge dials in a tone on rented/ borrowed gear for the shoot). Contestants plug their guitars into the same rig. 2. Backing tracks. Maybe even showcasing local bands to come in and lay down/submit some basic riffs and grooves for solos to shine over. The elimination aspect is wicked. I enjoy the "shredding" of the name. The hosting and editing are spot on. I also enjoy the length of each episode. Hopefully this inspires more applicants! It has inspired me to become a patron haha

I'm enjoying the series. I think what we're getting to see is how hard it is to be a studio-ready shredder. Not just technique, but being able to improv shred-style on something as simple as a nursery takes a lot of practice and dedication. Kuddos to the guitarists with the guts to do this at any skill level.

One of the first assignments I give my students is to take the major scale and find every childhood song they remember. It is a great tool to reinforce the scale shape and how to navigate hearing relative tones. I lover seeing how far this technique can be taken.
@caitlinmarshwous27076 жыл бұрын
Some of these guys are sooooo fucking far from being consistent enough to take part in a competition. This would be far more interesting with seasoned, professional musicians. Also, Frankie C is so far above the competition as far as his raw talent, consistency and adaptability it's hard to call this really a competition.

@allendean98076 жыл бұрын
I like this show, but a couple of things i would like to see- backing tracks for the soloists. This is a shred contest, not a rhythm one. Second, set a tone for these people. I know they all want to bring their tones, but you can tell most of them have bedroom tones. This never works in a live setting. Get them some mesas, some Marshall’s, and set up a universal tone that they could all dig. I guarantee you, if they had Skolnick’ stone, they would all play better....
@themaggot86 жыл бұрын
Rhythm has EVERYTHING to do with being able to play tasty leads. The best example is Paul Gilbert. About the tones...yeah, they suck.
@morricane50876 жыл бұрын
Although Paul himself tends to (jokingly - but hell he always jokes) say he has no feel of rhythm anymore once he goes all-out :D
@stef20906 жыл бұрын
I guess a big problem with setting a universal tone for everyone to use is not everyone may like the set tone. I agree a better tone can improve your playing as it can give you a confidence boost and other things etc. But if you are forced to use a tone you don't happen to like then that can negatively impact your playing. However, i do think something needs to be done since some guitarists like to use loads of effects which can mask mistakes. This can put them at an advantage since it's harder for the judges to tell if they really nailed that sweep or not. A good example is Alex (the contestant) yeah he played fast, but not always clean. If you watch him compete against Frankie in the final, someone who plays fast and very cleanly, the difference is night and day. Sorry to jump video but a great example is in episode 5 at 1:20. He plays this descending run on the E string; while it may not be too obvious to the judges, from our point of view we can see he's blagging it. If his effects weren't protecting him, he wouldn't be able to do that and thus it's an even playing field, or fret board haha. So maybe a good middle ground would be "Ok guys, here's the amps, good amps, set your distortion, your overdrive, whatever, maybe a wah wah pedal here and there but no crazy effects going on 24/7, we'll sound test you in a minute to see if it's articulate" Don't get me wrong sometimes his effects worked really well but they shouldn't be his default tone on the show for reasons above. Sorry if i deviated haha
