In my opinion, there's one reason for Metallica's worldwide success: James' voice. Pure and simple. To the masses, the vocals is what captures them the most. And James' voice is pretty much greater than life. He can do everything he wants with hit. It's powerful when it has to, it's melodic and sad on the soft sections, etc. Always expressive. It's amazing. You put some random, even if technically talented singer in Metallica, since 1983, doing the exact same songs, and lyrics, etc. And the band would have never achieved the same success. Plus, James' presence as a frontman is also very charismatic. Always was.

I disagree with you, Metallica and Megadeth were both great bands 35 years ago. Megadeth focused more on technique and great writing material, staying true to their roots. As a guitar player, I personally gravitated towards the absolute guitar driving and taste of the solos Dave emphasized. Metallica on the other hand, lost their focus and strayed away from their base fans. Kirk Hammett has not developed enough as a player for me to be interested in. This comparison came 35 years too late.

Even if they did do Metallica numbers they probably wouldn't have the groove and would play too many notes. Over playing is the worst habit of all. I mean Malmsteen has sold merely 15M records compared to Metallica's 120M. People don't care about virtuosity. They want songs. I think The Beatles made that obvious. None of them were virtuosos but they became the most successful band in history because they had songs in spades. Songs that orchestras perform today!

I don't agree with Shred . Dave hasn't sold 55 Million Albums being just a Rubic's Cube of Complete Complexity. I mean that's more Albums sold than A lot of Legendary Hard Rock / Metal bands in the RNRHOF . In the 80s Dave over did his Riffs with more Note Phrasing on a lot of Songs he did than Actually using Bar Chord Riffing like Metallica . That is true . But Dave does learn from his mistakes . Dave was watching Metallica very Closely in the Late 80s and early 90s . Dave actually kept it pretty simple and Direct on most of his Albums in the 90s on Megadeth Albums . Megadeth's Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings Albums have shown this being their most Successful Commercial Albums . " Symphony Of Destruction " , " Et Tu Lemond " , " Angry Again " or " Black Curtains" are pretty simple songs to play by Megadeth in the 90s . Dave's Problem is his Singing is limited . He just isn't on the same Level as James Singing . If Megadeth had a Different Singer they would be a lot bigger than they have been , easily .

This to say, obviously, I don't know how it was in the 80's, was just a child, but from what I capture from reading magazines and watching interviews and documentaries about the History of Megadeth, part of the band's success was also due to Mustaine's rebelious nature back in those days. He also writes about that, in the remastered versions of the 80's albums from Megadeth. Even Megadeth fans were considered to be the more chaotic of the Thrash Family, when following the band.

I wish I could go back to that time to be honest when the world was actually Normal , Cheaper , and a lot less divisive . Dave Untamed Mustang has been successful because he has been relentless in his pursuit of Greatness . He has surrounded himself with Very Talented Musicians in his Band over the Last 40 Years . He has been a surprising original alternative to Metallica . In the 80s Sex and Politics were very good selling Points . Dave's 80s music was very Political and Sexualized , so he capitalized very well with that formula . Dave's voice is very distinct so when you hear a Megadeth Song , you know it's him .

Metallica is slower and James has a less divisive voice. Megadeth is more musically eclectic... varied influences and varying musical framework. So that gives Metallica a commercial edge. But Dave is more aggressive, angrier, faster, elaborate but at the same time more melodic. To me it was always a wash... Megadeth is better. Period. But recently, for the last few yrs I've come to truly appreciate Metallica's genius and legacy. I still like Megadeth more, but not categorically, and it's not a wash. It can truly go both ways.

Megadeth has a better overall discography than Metallica. It’s a tough decision on whether Megadeth had better records or not. But Metallica had more iconic releases and they are more well known. But…Metallica while heavy have a more commercial vibe which is great but is watered down compared to the raw hatered in megadeth lyrics. The metal god himself Rob Halford said Megadeth is the better band because he likes the consistanly. I love both bands with a passion but I think Megadeth is the superior band for a number of reasons. Metallica kicking dave out of the band and becoming commercially sucessful led to him rival metallica and create one of the best bands in thrash metal history.

I play shows in a Metallica cover band. I hardly get a satisfaction from playing because of how simple it is. I dont get a feeling of accomplishment. And it doesnt force anyone to get better. Megadeth forces you to dedicate more of yourself to be able to pull off the music. Just by playing and posting stories on IG feels good because of what it took to do a Marty or Broderick solo. So i feel accomplished. And it also pulls me into the complexity of Megadeths music. While Metallica is easier on the mainstream ear, I'll put Megadeth up top because talent and effort is just light-years ahead. And James has a perfect 80s, 90s, metal voice, I'll give them that.

James has always been a better singer than Dave, but Dave has been consistently churning out heavier and faster riffs than Metallica, especially in the two most recent decades and has significantly more output as well. It's tough to say who was better in the 80s and 90s but Megadeth definitely succeeds over Metallica for pretty much anything after the Load era (and Load is still a classic and underrated album IMO, far better than anything off Risk) End of the day though, the Metallica vs Megadeth debate is tired and just needs to end.

@@elgatofelix8917 What is fascinating to me about the Metallica vs Megadeth debate is how so many amazing Megadeth songs are constantly forgotten. "Mary Jane", for example is an absolute gem. Lyrics included. It has a beautiful dark medieval flavour to it in the beginning, then it builds up to the epic final section. When it comes to both bands, it's always the same freaking songs being analyzed. That's also what makes it so repetitive. And as you mentioned the Load era also has excellent tracks, like "Where the Wild Things Are." That stuff is no less good than the 80's classics.

Metallica are simply the best songwriters of thrash and metal in general. Not that I think they do so much anymore in the new millennium. Well, there's also Pantera as top songwriters. But they didn't last long enough to have shitty albums

in my opinion, Megadeth has better songs and good consistency. Metallicas first 4 or 5 albums are great but their newer shit sucks. though the songs that ARE good in metallica are better than most of the best songs in Megadeth. mainly because of Jason's voice. Dave isnt a very good singer, which is a shame.

Funny how I'm seeing this video after you've made a bunch of other more recent ones that seem to indicate you favor megadeth. In terms of popularity there is no contest, and this is coming from someone who enjoys my 35 year old megadeth albums much more than the metallica ones. But with that said, Dave sounds like crap in concert, and metallica is a far better live band to me. I can still listen to peace sells, rust, cte, and youthanasia on repeat but can't do it for any metallica album. And megadeth since youthanasia is not that good anyway so there's not much to compare against metallica's new garbage.
