100% true. After playing Metallica for months, Rust In Peace in general was hard, but ok to learn. But, when we talk about Dave heroin days, I just can't learn a LOT of Killing/Peace Sells/SFSGSW riffs. Always there're a "easy" song in the album like, Mechanix, Peace Sells, In My Darkest Hour, but Dave almost lead in rhythms, it's crazy. Black Friday and Wake Up Dead after the spider chord is just impossible for me. I still struggle in some Justice riffs, but if I put the time that I'd needed to learn Holy Wars, for sure I would have already got the entire Justice mastered. And I still can't do 100% Rust In Peace. That's my experience playing these wonderful bands.

I appreciate both. Particularly pre-Black album Metallica. Dave wanted Megadeth to be Bigger, Louder, and Faster. And 2 out of 3 Ain't bad. My biggest problem with Metallica is, and always will be Bro-Dude James stage presence, and Lars. Nothing specific about Lars, just Lars. He bugs the everloving crap out of me. And just before somebody jumps in and decides that I'm just picking on Lars, Dave is no angel. Far from it. Some of the stuff he's said in interviews and whatnot over the years, I flat out can't defend. But I can separate Dave the guy, from Dave the Songwriter/Singer/Guitarist. Megadeth has had some fantastic lead guitar players, and I constantly see this debate about "Who's the best guitarist Megadeth has had" and it's a silly question. Dave is the best guitarist Megadeth has had. A) He was the Lead in Metallica, prior to the split, B) Watch the interviews, not just with Dave, but with Kiki, Marty, Chris (Poland/Broderick) does anybody here really think that he had no input into the lead parts, and/or can't play them himself? And yes, I will gladly take the Man behind the kit banging on the skins in Megadeth over Lars. I don't care which one, they've all been better. I don't hate Metallica, I don't think Dave is some kind of god, or that there was ever really a fight. Whatever it is that makes music appeal to one person, and not to another, Megadeth does a better job of making me *feel* something, overall. So they get the nod.

I find Megadeth a little boring to watch live and Dave's voice doesn't hold up well (seen both bands live many times over the last 30+ years). All that being said I still think MoP is the most important metal album ever and Metallica probably hold more places in my top 20 songs than Megadeth do. Marty is probably the most important guitarist Megadeth ever had and, honestly, if you look at his body of work he's done far more than any other guitarist Megadeth ever has, even teaching the legendary Jason Becker as a teenager. I believe Dave has said in interviews that Marty's playing encouraged him to become better, more exploratory and cleaner as a lead guitarist which I think shows over albums after RIP.

For me I prefer Metallica during the 80s, and Megadeth was better during the 90s (mostly). Since the year 2000 I've only liked one album from each. Death Magnetic and Endgame respectively. As far as complexity. Normally I wouldn't say complexity automatically makes music better in most situations. Except in Thrash Metal, where I'm pretty sure that's kind of the point to be extremely complex. So at least in this genre it definitely makes the music better. As far a Kirk Hammet. His solos all kind of sound the same to me. He seems like he's gotten lazy in his composition over the years. In response to album sales, it just goes to show how the vast majority of consumers of music are a bunch of empty skulled mouth breathers who shy away from deeper music

Been with Megadeth since they started, yeah Im that old 56. I like Metallica and no doubt they are good. It seems like Kirk has gotten lazy, I cant remember when he played a solo thats memorable at all and as a guitar player its a let down to see a once world class player result to Pentatonics and a Wah pedal. On the other hand I believe Megadeth is unrivaled. The more complex songs are what we the fans want and expect from Dave and he delivers in a big way. I wont touch who is the better guitar player for Megadeth, Ill leave it as the big three ( They are all above Hammet and I do hate to say that ) I will say Metallicas best sound in my opinion was the Garage Days album, that was bad ass and I was thinking why did you change that. Over all Megadeth is the better band in my opinion. I shared Daves anger back in the day and that attracted me, the guitar was blazing unlike anything I ever heard and Daves voice is one of a kind along with the wicked lyrics. Megadeth is unrivaled !! By the way Kiko had Marty contribute on a solo album, its called Open Source and the song is Imminent Threat. Enjoy you can hear some of Daves riffing and chugs in there as its in their souls now.

Correction: Megadeth has sold 50M+ records worldwide compared to Metallica's 125M. Still a huge difference, but you have to keep in mind that in the 90s, the same people who were listening to Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys were also jumping on the Metallica bandwagon. That never happened with Megadeth. Their fans remained Rock and Metal purists.

All good points, but total album sales aren't a reflection of the complexity in musical styles. The music industry was quite different in the 80s, all radio, vinyl and cassette, with record stores and no internet/streaming. Elektra Records (Metallica) was a beast... vs. a much smaller Combat Records(Megadeth). Big label equals big marketing and their productions are honed to create that anthem/hook. vs a smaller label that might embrace the independence of their artists, in this case, the complexity of daves songs and riffs.

But from a guitar-players point of view it is more rewarding getting a Megadeth riff or solo dead on. Dave's solo have very little story to tell or feeling while Kirk's solo's you can sing along to and really fit the song. Marty on the other hand has the best style of soloing in my ears to this day. Other then that James just has the best metal voice and lyrics ever. Dave's voice takes some getting used to and wont click with you after one listen. More sales doesn't qualify as the better band, what criteria are you measuring "better" here? The Beatles have sold more than Metallica, but I wouldn't say it's due to the Beatles being a better band. Metallica sold more than Megadeth because they were more melodic, catchier, anthemic and accessible. They also developed a large following in the underground before breaking into the mainstream years earlier than Megadeth did. James' better vocals played a huge part in that as well. Megadeth have *some* melodic songs however overall they're more technical and aggressive, and Dave's vocals are snottier and thus not as accessible. In fact they're polarising. 😂 They're distinctive and suit Megadeth but they're simply not as strong as James'.

Megadeth is undeniably more complex than Metallica. I much preferred Menza's drumming to that of Lars. Is Megadeth better? Not to me. Megadeth is Mustaine's solo project of decades of trying really earnestly to compete with the band that rejected him. Mustaine's voice is not a plus for the band to me, as he sounds like a muppet that stepped on lego caltrops. I can't handle much of it. Marty is freaking amazing. 666 Kirks couldn't equal his chops. Poland is more relatable to me, and I think he played the 'right' solos more than the fanciest. Trujillo and Cliff are 10s Lead Guitar:Hammett vs Poland/Marty/Broderick/Kiko These guys from Megadeth were all freaks, they were the best of the best. Marty is a 11/10, the rest are 10s. Hammett has a style that I dont feel fits Metallica well but he’s a 9/10 Singer/Guitar:James vs Dave James voice is better but playing skill they are both 10s.
