Rodney, has been my hero since the 80’s I have still got one of his original set ups and get it out occasionally (I’m now 48) the TED talk he did along with other interview’s at the time, helped me evaluate my life and what was important to me. So his most important contribution to me was saving my humanity and making more humble as he is.

To me there’s still nobody more technical and fluid than Rodney, what he was doing was light years ahead of his time, even watching him today blows my mind and don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of guys pushing the progression of the sport to levels never thought possible. The sport would never be what it is without and I’m so thankful to grow up in his time. If you’ve never road those old school boards you have no idea what it’s like to do anything on them. You are so on point I actually had a try at freestyle boards way back the trucks were way different and almost flat and early street decks were not great until several shapes based off the double vision came out I know my favorite early board was the Natas Psycho Kitty with the claws it had a nice big nose then I got a Ray Barbie with the 🔥 nostalgia moment sorry 😂

I have watched the bones brigade documentary probably 50 times. It motivated me to be a better skater and learn my all time favourite trick. It took me 2 straight years everyday working at it. I learnt the frontside air just because of watching them fly through the air. It was worth every second. I HIGHLY suggest that video to any skateboarder. It changed my life. I quit drugs, ate healthy and realized that skateboarding IS MY DRUG. Thanks Bones Brigade, Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill and Lance Mountain. I will never be the same person again.

I remember that back in the days we were totally blown away seeing Rodney doing the first primo slides and dark slides. Sliding on the wrong side of the board was so unbelievable. And I guess the technicality of many of his tricks can not be rated high enough. There are still many flip / under flip / pressure flip tricks and manual combos Rodney did many years ago that very few skaters (if any) did after him since then.

That’s exactly what I thought! Dark slides also amazed me? Many combos and even like you said + some of the underflip variations are so technical and difficult they become somewhat niche & attempted by few skaters. The combination of freestyle and street had me totally hooked. I wonder how many of those tricks were done only perhaps once or a few times. You’d see the difference in most skaters for sure! Sorry for the ramble but yeah perfect summary from yourself! Rodney continue to inspires on and off the board :)

9:57 I swear to god, these days I always read stories about "the most influential people in Skateboarding history" and I read about Rodney, I read about Tony Hawk, Gonz, Stacey Peralta and they're all absolutely worthy, but Mike Ternasky very rarely gets mentioned. He is definitely under appreciated in that regard as so many of the top skaters from that era, in particular Danny Way, state how important Mike was to them. I mean, without Mike, we would literally have had no post-Bones Brigade Rodney Mullen. In my view he is skateboarding's unwritten champion.

On the note about the flatland ollie, back when I first started skating, it was the latest trick. And being able to ollie back then was enough to attract sponsors. It seems now to have become the basis of nearly every trick. I landed an old school (pre-ollie) kickflip at a skate park once, and everyone under 30 lost their minds. Good thing I didn't try one of my old signature no handed haze beans, but modern boards are a bit longer than old school freestyle boards, increasing the risk

I'd have to say that Mullen is one of the most if not the most influential person in street skating. There are too many tricks that he invented to be able to pick just one as the biggest contribution to modern street skating but the flat land ollie was the doorway to all other tricks so that would have to be my pick. Imo he's the GOAT in street skateboarding.

All the tech tricks we see now would not have been possible if Rodney had done them decades ago. He honestly is the visionary when it comes to modern street skating. Lazer flip? Dolphin flip? Darkslide? Just amazing. As well when we see these tricks and flips being done we take our own spin on them and create new variants of them. Plus also, I had that Mark V. barnyard deck. I got so much fun and joy with that deck. It showed me a different way to skate. Love your channel my friend!!!

My best memory in sk8boarding was when I met Rodney in Santa Monica. I remember thinking how nice he was and all I wanted to do was make laugh. So we hung out for a bit and did my best. To answer your last question, Rodney's biggest influence in my life is the point in his talk at Pop Tech where he discusses the importance of knowing something is possible vs knowing how to technically do something... how the idea that something is possible (exposure) is more important than the understanding of how to do it (knowledge). That simple insight has influenced my professional work multiple times and with amazing results for both myself and my clients.

As a big Rodney fan since ~2006, I knew all those facts besides minor details. Yet, I think I can add about Oust bearings, which were designed after Rodney skated some regular set of bearings and Oust analyzed what kind of damage was done in order to adapt the regular design for skateboarding. Kinda like what Bones have with their "Skate Rated" seal of approval, Oust came up with Machine Optimum Clearance (MOC series) that were even sold Under Tensor label for a couple years (I still have both available at the time types of bearing designs with Tensor logo).

Pretty sure Rocco took most of the heat for 'ruining skateboarding' for vert skaters back then, but I wonder if Rodney also got hate from established pros at the time. Sure he's the GOAT now, but at the time the vert guys were like the 'alpha' bros in skateboarding, while freestyle was something of a nerdy sideshow. But Rodney flipped that and invented modern, technical, flip-centric skateboarding, cancelling many a slash dog's career overnight. That must have rubbed some people the wrong way, I imagine. Great stuff again, Shredz Shop, Reminds me I still need to check out his book.

I remember it as Rocco and rodney and all the other freestylers were freestyling while streetskateing was being developed by the likes of natas and the gonz and all the great vertical skaters and anyone who wanted to sk8 but didn't want to wait their turn on the ramp. Rodney just helped push it to new levels years later.

I love Tony Hawk just as much as the next skater. I even met him once and he is an awesome person, as everyone knows. But, man, Rodney has got to be the most influential. Not everyone can get to a halfpipe, or skate vert. Most kids are just skating in the streets looking for stuff to skate on. I'm not saying someone wouldn't have eventually figured it out, but it was Rodney that did. Modern street skating exists because of Rodney Mullen.

Rodney got me obsessed with skateboarding after I saw his video part in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. I couldn't understand what I was witnessing at the time. Years later I've probably worn through more plies of Almost skateboards, than any other brand.

The kickflip in general because it’s my all time favorite trick and my favorite Rodney trick is the nollie kickflip front foot under flip in that bank in round 3 I think it was 🤔 and basically just every single video part he’s ever done is absolute gold.
