There's a good reason he's named one of the most important skaters of all time. This video shows what tricks he invented when, taking the reference of an old Plan B ad: The house that Rodney built.

As Rodney tells the story, he first came up with the idea for the magic flip while he was practicing ollies. He bailed on one, and when he did the board flipped, landed on all four wheels and rolled away. He says it felt like the board was mocking him. A few hours later he'd figured out how to do it on purpose and roll away. Thus the magic flip was born.

yeah "probably" isn't really a thing anymore. Rodney Mullen basically is skateboarding. There is no other sport where one person has SO MUCH influence. This isnt like Michael Jordan or LeBron or Wayne Gretzky or the best players you could ever think of this guy literally basically invented his sport. Everyone just does the tricks that this guy invented. It's absolutely insane. he's really nice for not competing in competitions anymore otherwise he would just win every single skate competition without any questions considering he is the literal inventor of the tricks. He is the godfather of skateboarding. Without Rodney Mullen we would have absolutely nothing as skaters.

@@kvltizt yeah by the time those guys hit the scene, RM was like from the old school, and almost a thing from the past. Rod was still respected, it’s just when you’re sooooo friggin amazing and better than everyone else, people take your *GENIUS* for granted.

When I started skateboarding back in 1998 I was just your casual riding type boarder. A year later I saw my first video of Tony Hawks, then later on saw his 900 spin I was inspired to do better. In 2001 I met a guy in a local area who was also a skater and he was looking at me and said “pretty good” and then he showed me some of his tricks. He then asked me who I idol and obviously I said Tony and then he said Rodney was his idol. I was 9 years old had no idea who he was and he told me he invented the tricks I learned. I honestly thought Tony invented everything. He invited to this skate shop and I met some pretty cool people and then they showed me VHS tapes of Rodney. I was mind blown that this was the creator of most of the tricks we see today and I’m blessed to have learned when I was younger some of his tricks. He was obviously a true inspiration and gifted man to learn all this and showcase it too the world to learn and see.

Great work. As a skater who started in 1983, I appreciate your efforts to document earlier periods. Here's a thing about one-footed ollies. The first ones, and I'm pretty sure these are the ones Rodney invented, were different. Pop and get your front foot out of the way, then draw your back foot up and level the board out with the back foot. It is a WEIRD trick. Ron Allen does them this way still. Later someone came up with the one we know today, where you level it out with the front foot and kick forward, aka the ollie north. I actually learned that original style way back then and I had a pretty nasty one. Haven't done it since then though!
