I think it was such a surprise because, in my life, it was the first time I had ever experienced a sequel to animated film that was not only just as good, but even better than the original. Every other animated film that I had experienced up until that point was a straight-to-vhs/dvd sequel of lesser quality. I genuinely didn’t know that a great animated sequel was a thing that could happen. Shrek 2 was the movie that changed all of that. Now animated franchises are the norm.

Bit of trivia, the author was originally against a movie being made, as he was worried they wouldn't make Shrek as revolting as he wrote him, to make him more acceptable to movie audiences. He was delighted that they made him even grosser. XD

Listen, this movie has a lot of messages, but the one that stood out to me is self-love: love yourself for who you are and find someone who loves you for you. And this franchise doesn't follow the storybook lore. Who'd expect a princess to be in love with an ogre? Shrek and Fiona are my favorite animated couple🌻

Shrek 1 and 2 are absolute classics definitely childhood favourites they are so good and agreed it's really great when films you grow up watching in childhood have that universal broad appeal so when you revist them as an adult you catch all the adult humor and context that you probably didn't pick up on when you were younger is always great to see great reaction can't wait for your Shrek 2 reaction

What I love about the storyline of this film is that at the beginning you’d expect Shrek to feel like his life is incomplete and to desire for more but in reality he’s perfectly content living his life as an ogre in his swamp. Basically if Shrek had an “l want” song he’d basically just want things to stay exactly the way they are. I think that’s a nice subversion from the norms of at least fairy tale type stories. The main driving force for Shrek to go along with the plot was simply to return things to the status quo.

9/10 Groundbreaking. For younger viewers, they might not understand the impact of "Shrek" on the film industry and CGI movies. However, being an older guy, I remember how groundbreaking and amazing the computer animation was when the film debuted. It was head and shoulders better than the few CGI movies that had come out in the previous decade...and it finally gave Pixar a serious run for the money. In addition, the plot was very adult...and the film's appeal was much greater than a typical CGI story. Great animation, great story telling and great voice acting, while the movie isn't quite impressive to see today, it still holds up very well and is well worth your time.

It took me the longest time to watch this movie. My last name is pronounced Shrek. When I would make dining reservations I would use that spelling so the host or hostess would yell my name properly. Then this movie came out and when I made a reservation they thought I was joking and hung up the phone. Also I am an animator and I applied for a job at dreamworks while this was in preproduction. They turned me down. So they used my name and rejected me and I had been developing a troll comic and the main character was named Shrock as a mis pronunciation of my name. So I HATED them for all this. But one day I watched it and really loved it as an alternative to Disney …… who also turned me down. I suck. 🤦🏻‍♂️
