I'm just a littl younger. I found them in 1980 and have been listening to them ever sincr. It was the "All around My Hat" album. Since I was living in San Diego, California, English Folk Rock was not all that popular on the radio. Thank goodness for Tower Records!

I believe it was 1974 when I heard Steeleye for the first time. My roommate in a house in Denver, whose name was Gary Drury, told me that they were coming to town for a show. His sister was married to Peter Knight. We got passes to the show, and I was amazed. I'd never heard anything like them, taking old English, Irish, and Scottish lyrics and making folk rock songs...they were and are so good...I've bought and kept all their albums, and would love to see them again, and am so glad they are still playing together...we partied pretty hard in their hotel that night...I'll never forget!

Regardless of new members etc, it has to be said, a lot of bands get to this point in their career and require a LOT of support from session players and backing singers etc OR they are a car crash. THIS BAND IS INCREDIBLE!! The live sound has matured like a fine wine and it's literally THE BAND on the stage performing this superb music!! I'm a late comer to Steeleye Span and I'm vexed to have missed so much over the years but glad to know they really are still at the top of their game and going strong. They are HIGH on my list of artists to see live as soon as possible. The more I'm discovering about them, the more I'm loving them.

I had the very good fortune to see these folks perform when they opened for Jethro Tull in 1973 in Denver, Colo. Their opening really got my attention. They were all simply standing in a row, wearing robes and hoods, with the only lighting being a spotlight on each one. They began singing with this amazing harmony, a capella, a song that sounded to my young ears like it was centuries old. After maybe maybe a minute, they threw off their robes, all the stage lights came up, and they launched into this fantastic high energy thing with, I think, Maddie leaping back and forth on the stage.

@bwanna23 3 жыл бұрын
@@folkme3042 I've been a fan since their inception. Is maiden disrespectful? Is matron? Why should crone be disrespectful? It's the natural progression of a magickal female, (sometimes called a witch) and there's nothing derogatory about it. I don't think Maddy would be offended. She would probably just laugh and do a "hokus-pocus" gesture with her fingers. I love what she has brought to this world.

@@bwanna23 A crone is an ugly old woman - that's the definition. You can attach all that 'magick' cobblers to it but in effect you are saying she is old and ugly. I think any woman would be offended to be called a crone.

I can hardly remember when I didn't know Steeleye Span. My second cousin (much older than me) was a part of the British folk scene in the late 60s and I heard Maddy, Tim, Ashley and the original lineup from a very early age (c1970). I've followed them in all their reincarnations, and they are always superb. A real treat was Tim Hart coming on to do a solo spot an an into to their show in Rhyl c. 1997. I was there with a technician friend, Guy from Theatr Clwyd, and we met Maddie in the bar just before the show opened. She said we shouldn't miss the support act. Tim was wonderful. Among the songs he sang was his 'Dancing at Whitsun'. Magical. Benji is a fantasic addition to Steeleye's line up, and folk royalty to boot! I hope I can see them many more times in future.

Saw them first in Aberdeen at Capitol cinema early 70's , several times here in Australia - like Maddie's voice, they just get better with the years. Had the pleasure to speak with Maddie (solo gig and Tivoli Brisbane) and Rick Kemp (at Twin Towns, NSW) after almost all of these unforgettable nights - so genuine, warm and funny, no superstar pretensions, lovely people and wonderful artists.

I have loved this band since the 70's. Got to see them when I lived in Oz in the late 80's! Thank you for the upload!

Saw SS at Newark, Notts March 2019. As a long time fan I thought that the band had not suffered from its changing line up. Maddie seems to hold it all together. She said the band is like a bus, with passengers getting off and on.
