Very interesting as always. It would be great to see you build your own engine with a block from one engine and a head from another with motorbike pistons ;)

I dont know anything about imps as I am more of a ford guy but I enjoy watching the machining and you share knowledge about tuning. Thanks alot and merry christmas from Sweden!

Interesting. I had a 76 Caledonian with an oil drain head and loads of other good bits as standard. What a delight. First I put Cooper S points in it (on the stub of a 3.2mm twistdrill shaft jammed into the 45D baseplate) to help it rev and then later electronic ignition. With the electronic ignition, it would easily rev to 8000 for overtakes. I remember giving my boss a lift to the garage to pick up his car (he was a Leyland engine Chief Engineer) and he couldn't believe his eyes when he say the needle swinging round to 8000rpm! Love SU carbs: so robust and reliable. Stromberg's people would rant about accuracy but it couldn't be accurate if it wasn't working! For SU tuning you need the needle charts. There used to be a popular book that had about 80% of them listed in the back. If you identify the spot where you have a problem then you need to check for weak or rich and then find the piston position. Adjusting the jet up and down will tell you whether it's weak or rich. Dividers can be used to measure the height of the piston while it's running at the point in question. Then just laboriously go through the tables. (For a single SU folk would just have a go on the needle with emery cloth but that will never go well for twins!)

In the 80s used to work on night shift for a machine tool company jig boring on a GSip. We used to do "foreigners" quite often, one job I did was skimming the head on an imp that was used in a sidecar racer, It had dropped a valve and the head had been welded. I had to machine what I think were wells grooves in the head after skimming. Was this a thing back in the day or was it a one off?

Love the sound and I'm sure that may be the goldilocks amount of power for a road imp. Is it possible to have the driveability of this engine but also be able to rev to 8-9? I'm not really bothered about hp. R20 and fuel injection?

its all a trade off am afraid, fuel injection will help

What do you think of twin SU's vs bike carbs vs Webers?
