Mark, I wanted to drop you a line to say thanks for all your advice and videos so far. Last week I started a business relationship with my local aquarium shop to sell them cherry shrimp and their first order of 200 shrimp has paid for a new rack to increase the size of my tanks and look after my shrimp even better. Another helpful and interesting video Mark! I'm a long time fish keeper, but new to trying to keep live plants in my tank. I killed a lot of plants while cycling my new tank, and that was a little expensive. My tank's a couple months old now, and the water parameters have been steady and stable now for a few weeks. I'm hoping that the plants that managed to hang on, along with a few new ones I just planted, will do OK. I didn't want to use any fertilizer in a cycling tank, but I'm using a little shrimp safe liquid fertilizer now. Wish me luck!

Only ferilizer I add to make tanks is what I feed. The tricky thing can be finding what grows well in your water. For example I cannot even grow java fern lol. I have really hard water for plants, so I found some that worked and have mainly stuck with those handful of plants.

Those yellow berries looked awesome on that red/orange rilli! I could add if kh is low in the tap it’s always a good idea to add some crushed coral, or aragonite substrate. Great video!!🙂👍🏻

Yep, crushed coral and the like can be good active substrates for neos in water with no kh.

i use active soil for plants not for shrimp and cap it with sand. water seems to not change as much when i do cap it unlike if i add botanicals when adding IAL gotta remember to wait a week and testing water before adding more leaves. I feel if you want to use inert substrate you will need to find a way to put nutrients into it for the plant roots to flourish which means you'll need to spend more money on plant care than if you used a capped active soil setup kinda like the walstad method.

Best moss in my opnion is whatever one you have the best success with. Mosses can be finicky with different kinds of water. I find most mosses struggle in my hard water, some just do way better than others depending on your water.

I got like 5 shrimp all different color and the fish place worker didn’t think to tell me that if you cross breed the colors they’ll eventually have brown offsprings and now I have a bunch of colors and some of them are starting to have brown babies

Just take out the ones you dont like, you do that with lines, and you can do that while mixing colors as well.
