Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Toward the end of the Civil War, General Sherman burned the city of Atlanta to the ground. In 1864, Father Thomas O'Reilly pleaded with Sherman to spare his church, The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and four other downtown churches. The Shrine is among Atlanta's oldest buildings.
