Sometimes I feel the need to do these videos because watching my videos it always looks like I'm using the high end gear and that could be the difference (which it may account for a small part) but the big picture is having appropriate gear is sometimes all you need and that is largely independent on price of gear

Shroom just wanted your opinion looking at getting a light set up for whiting I have the rod sorted just looking at a 1000 sized reel . What would you recommend? bait and lure fishing nippers, worms and a sugar pen lures

It'll have to be a light carbon/graphite reel obviously depending how much you want to spend. I'd be looking to pair it with a Vanford or Revelry. That's sort of an upper midrange price, depends on how much you spent on the rod. The more you spent, the more justified an expensive reel becomes to fully utilise it imo

Combos are great starting gear ,especially for kids starting out, 👏, having fished Queensland for 20years, noticed many locals only using handlines up to 100lb line! With amazing results 😍 😊

Great vid. The response when the KMart lady said "have a nice day" was priceless. The whiting you got was a horse of a fish for whiting (not just length, but fat as well). It's great someone is featuring generic KMart equipment & brands that are budget friendly. Taking a whiff of the fish when you catch one is interesting as different types of fish give off different odours. This can be a clue for what it might taste like & also any diseases. I've been using a couple of large kids' rod & reel combos from KMart (roughly $10 to $15 each) with pre-rigged patter-noster, flattie, & river bait rigs out on a kayak. Just drop the line over the side, let it sink to the bottom & wait for the action. It doesn't sound very share worthy, particularly when it comes to prepping for dinner, but I've eaten some of the freshest seafood I've ever eaten this way.

True that Philip, I probably had a silly grin on my facing as I walked out of there lol. It's nice using high end gear but cheap gear has it's place and it should be no barrier to anyone that wants to get into fishing or decides to purchase gear in that price range. Can still catch quality fish

Having fished for over 60 years, and tried most types, jetty ,beaches, offshore, fly, etc ,I believe the fishing reel is the most important gear, Penn Shimano etc ,with metal/bronze gearing, if can't afford new most pawn shops have, cheers 👍 😊

My best flatty lure is a Kmart special. The pattern pops up from time to time and i always grab em . Thin 4 inch shallow diver that looks a bit like a pilchard with a red belly and black spot on the side . You won't regret it.

You can easily catch fish with a $20 rod and reel. The only issue is two things. If you happen to get a really big one the rod or the line could break sure and if you put it away wet it’s not gonna last that long. But with basic maintenance and average sized fish you are in business

One of my favourite outfits for light fishing is a twenty dollar special from Kmart. I've had it for nearly thirty years and it's caught thousands of fish. 6ft x 6kg jarvis walker rod and a small Shimano quickfire reel.Still use it to this day, in fact I caught some bream, whiting and two luderick on beach worms yesterday.

Well rod and reel might be okay, But that Line sucks😁A great Modern Line Will cost same as entire set🤷🏼‍♂️But worth every dollar! I prefer Spiderwire™️ An expensive rod and a niiice reel dont make Anyone a better fisherman, just like cars! All depend on Knowledge of location, bait, depth…ect. Hey buddy , I see the whiting as you called them , we call them whitefish and I e been catching some nice ones about 20”-24” through the ice. I target these fish all winter ice fishing. Very good eating. Some people prefer them over trout and salmon. Which is what I primarily target. Maybe you should try whitefish too. They’re very good. I just prefer more oily fish.

We normally eat them here in aus, just the river he caught it in (paramatta river) is highly polluted and the government advises you to not eat fish from it.

@@ShroomFishing mate , fairdinkham , when I began lure fishing , those kmart combos are what I bought . I have other rods and reels now , more expensive and lighter . However my best Flatty on lure was caught at Parramatta weir a coupla months back , 65cms , and it was on a 6foot 6 , 2 to 4kg rod with a 2000 reel . I just put braid on the reel . It cost 20 dollars . The same with my biggest bass the other side of the weir , 46cms , on a combo that I was using the day we met . $15 👍✔😮

cheap gear does the job, good thing is if it seizes or breaks, its cheap enough to replace. Ive been using cheap gear for years with great success. I find it funny when someone else rolls up to a spot with big $$$ gear and tries to tell me I will not catch fish with cheap stuff. Then the drag usually goes off on the cheap rod.

Man the old Jarvis Walker (Scorpion) Combo's used to be the bomb. Never cleaned once since owning it. Never skipped a beat. The new jarvis walker focus stuff is absolute trash ;)
