I am a Chinese and I study Judo in Australia. The two throws you show in the video are similar to Judo techniques Ippon-seoi-nage and Tai-otoshi, which is interesting. I think the hand move in your first throw is more efficient than its Judo counterpart. Hopefully someday I return to China and learn something about Chinese wrestling!

Shuai Jiao can be argued that it is the ancestor of judo. Japan took a lot of things from China. Even karate is a descendant of southern gung fu styles, so it wouldn’t be surprising that Shuai Jiao is the ancestor of judo.

I train Shuai-Jiao and BJJ in the UK the throw Lavell is showing is a variation of a Tsuai or Bowing throw, there are a lot of different variations some are pretty much the same as traditional Judo grip, others with a high sleeve and cross lapel grip and this one which I like a lot for the quick set-up. A Tai-Otoshi in Shuai-Jiao is called a Bie. My personal belief which I think is most in line with the recorded history is that the Tang Dynasty version of Shuai-Jiao is the precursor to Sumo wrestling. But that the Grappling of Japanese jiu-jitsu is simply a case of convergent evolution. Especially as its greatest periods of JJJ expansion and growth during the shogunate era Japan was largely isolated from China and a lot of the outside world. Pretty much all cultures have or have had a system of wrestling/or jacket-based type techniques. Even the early fencing schools of Europe taught wrestling, throws, locks, and holds.

Its interesting seeing the techniques applied and how traditional forms offered the "text book" information. I've been studying Japanese styles for a while now and see that a lot of the kata have throwing postures. Nice video!

Fascinating! I've never seen that split-stance shoulder throw before, and as a lanky fellow, I want to try it out.

I’m able to get that single arm sleeve grip so easily, and then a simple off balancing technique and this throw becomes effortless. Such an amazing throw.

How can i do this against bigger opponents?. This works well against opponents of my same size, but fails against bigger opponents!.

It's more often than not a strength issue in these cases. You have to be able to move that much weight around consistently to throw bigger opponents. People always underestimate the necessity of strength training for martial artists. The leverage in this throw should work on bigger people, you just have to be strong enough to move a certain portion of their weight.

@@danielhounshell2526 All this, but also look at if there's something you can do in how you set the throw and your unbalancing. I've found that with larger guys. Cutting the angle on this throw and going at it diagonally from your uke rather than being at a full 180 degrees from uke. Don't know if that makes sense but it might help.

@@danielhounshell2526 Strength is clearly needed, but I think technique is as important. I know this is shauai cjiao, but I have seen Judo guys throw guys near twice their size. The technique of it was the positioning of the smaller guys hips and how he uplifted the larger opponent. It was an awesome spectacle to view.

Old fashion Judo like when I was young. Now, the new sets of rules in judo cancelled all those great moves. Can't use hand to hold legs, can't throw with shoulder, etc...... The style will get popular since the new judo is banning and cancelling everything. In 20 years we will end with only seoi nage LOL
