One of the big things that I find is good practice is to TAKE NO CHANCES. If there’s even a 1% chance to just get Crit to 0 by an enemy, don’t rely on that 99% chance where everything’s fine. If it can go wrong, it will go wrong.

The talk at the end of the video reminded me how I learned that Blinding Gas should always go first. I had made a front-heavy Champion team comp for Ruins with Vestal-PlagueDoc-Crusader-Leper (yes, I know that's a horrible team comp, but that's not the point). On my very first fight in the dungeon I decided *not* to use Blinding Gas as I had surprised the enemy and thought I would get a huge lead anyway. Every single unit on the enemy side then proceeded to attack my PlagueDoc and killed her on turn 1. Overconfidence was a pretty fast and insidious killer. I still finished that run.

I think you are illustrating the concept well with your Highwayman story : it's about preparation and mitigation. The game is designed to be hard and give you terrible surprises and you have to be ready to deal with them. I think a lot of people find it hard because we have that natural tendency of thinking that the worst won't really come around so we act fairly loosely... until it hits us, then we start to blame the game. If we know it's going to be hard and plan for it, we find out pretty quickly that such misfortunes become truly rare. They can't be avoided 100%, but if a bad streak like that happens only once or twice during your playthrough, you know you did well. Excellent video !

8:40 He also might've dodged one of those hits with the better armor. I think what makes this situation sting is that its difficult for even an experienced player to make a cost benefit analysis / risk assessment on if its worth that 3 to 5000 gold for an armor upgrade. And being punished so severely for nothing short of flawless play is pretty disheartening. Like seeing the damage table for in game enemies helps, but its not fun. Its one thing Im looking forward to in DD2, is all the simplification. As much as I love DD1, with stuff like the Dodge and Miss tokens working like the Aegis/Block tokens, you can plan around dodges and misses and instead of obsessively prepping the perfect team and the perfect trinket setup and the perfect etc, the game forces you to think on the fly. I don't know if it's a sign of playing well per se, but I'd say that it's generally good to know when to walk away and take a break. Some runs are punishing, and the frustration from that can disrupt concentration, reflexes, and strategic thinking, which typically leads to a snowball of worse gameplay and worse mentality. If it's not improving or if the frustration is growing into actual rage, give yourself some space from the game, come back to it with a fresh and level head when you're ready and you've had the time to mull over what went wrong. Continuing to play a game designed to be frustrating when you're already angry is a great recipe for doing something you'll regret (like deleting every save file in the middle of pitching a fit 😞).

Nice video! That turn four battle securing is a good one, having the fight under control by that point is sign of things going well. The other day I had the first situation that felt like Rng being against me, there was only one thing I felt like I could differently. It was intermediate lvl warrens, whole team had lvl 4 gear and I felt pretty good. On the first tile of the first hall way I get a fight with spiders, no surprise for either side. All the spiders went first and all attacked my occultist in the back, two crits and will all attacks combined they brought him down to death's door. Being spiders, you can guess what happened next, they had blighted him and he died right there as he was first of my team. I was baffled by what was happening because when I saw the second crit I had a feeling he was going to die and there would be nothing I could do to stop it. So after that fight I left the dungeon and just going to try again another time. The lesson I think I should learn from that encounter is to have at least one fast character on my team or put trinkets on for higher dodge or hp. But yea, pretty crazy that happened. Still a fun game though even if getting over 30 stress in one turn can be a huge pain.
@gordo_daimon3 жыл бұрын
The exact same thing happened to me. I have the feeling that the game has some kind of inner works that measure how well you are doing and then punish you with unavoidable things like that just because "the game es difficult". That is no difficult, that is cheesy and badly designed, in my opinion.
@disasterjones57983 жыл бұрын
@@gordo_daimon I can't speak to whether the game is rigged against you in that manner, but Shuffle mentioned in another video (can't remember which, sorry) that there's a backend roll happening with the speed that we don't see. Every character and enemy has a base speed that can be improved upon with trinkets or buffs, but at the beginning of the round there's an additional d8 stacked onto their speed. It's why sometimes your Leper will go before your HWM or your Occ before your GR; that backend roll was higher for Occ and Leper, and low for HWM and GR. When you think about it like dice, it feels less like it's out to get you, and more like a real bad night of rolls. I like to call it "Wil Wheatoning."

I made so many mistakes in my first 2 attempts. These attempts were on Radiant and I was still getting thrashed. And this was because I didn’t understand how shovels worked. I thought that the green checkmark was to accept the use of the shovel that was in the center and the red ❌ was to attempt to get through the rubble without the shovel. Turns out, thats not how it works. You have to click on the shovel to use it and the green checkmark is actually to ignore the shovel! I was constantly running into 2-3 obstacles a week and that was adding something like 60 extra stress to my teams every time they went out. So yeah, those runs were trashed, but now I know how to use the shovels and I’m loving it.

Completed my first year on Darkest with only two deaths so think I'm doing well. Biggest thing I had to learn that I think most people should is forget all you know about classic RPG Role types (Tank, Healer, Damage). That stuff doesn't really apply to this game in the traditional sense and if you get stuck in the mindset of things like Vestal is a Healer, Crusader is a Tank, etc you're going to be wasting a lot of these characters potential to overlap in significant ways and limit yourself from very valid team compositions.

I finished the game once and had some unfinished journeys. What I learned as a new player is that each run (even if unfinished if it was long enough) has a lesson which teaches me how I can play better next time. Last run taught me how to play HWM and Jester. At the first, unfinished run, Jester was just a stress healer contributing nothing else to the team and heroes frequently died around him. Learnt the importance of bleeding and buffs along the way. In case of HWM at first I thought his main purpose is grapeshot and spammed it. Later learned about the usefulness of reposting and that pos 1 shot. Now I start to understand why Occultist didn't work for me until now (I used them as an alternative to Vestal with the same role). The more you play the easier it gets. I don't say I'm an expert, I'm not. But if someone new reads this, listing some lessons I had to learn the hard way: 1. Losing one important hero doesn't mean game over. Quit my first playthrough when Vvulf obliterated me and by retreating my lvl 6 Plague Doctor died. Instead of continuing I was like the losses are too heavy, let's finish playing this. 2. Quirk micromanagement is not super important unless for very importanirlooms t battles. For Champion bosses and for the DD I suggest checking if there is any phobia which makes your life harder because those missions have a real risk of killing your heroes. Risk should be minimized. 3. Heirlooms can be exchanged to one-another (at a bad rate). Upgrades should be prioritized. I started with going to missions, coming back to the hamlet then checking every building if I can upgrade anything. This attitude makes the really important upgrades happen much later in the game. Good weapons, aromors and skills are important. Having 3 place in the gambling hall to lose your trinkets is not. 4. Trinkets. Initially I assigned trinkets to specific characters. It shouldn't be the case. You have a perfect Vestal setup for your lvl5 Vestal but you go to a Veteran quest with a lvl 3 Vestal then as long as you are not afraid of a potential team wipe, just use the good Vestal trinkets. Swap them anytime you feel comfortable. 5. If a character seriously underperforms you are playing it wrong. Based on experience. Jester, HWM, MAA, Occultist. At first I thought they just all suck big time then learned how to play them. 6. Plan party based on the quest. Don't be big stupid like me, trying to defeat the hag with a Crusader-Leper frontline because I forgot about the cauldron's existence. 7. Last thing is being obstinate kills you. Usually you see 1-2 turns in advance if it's a fight where someone probably dies. Sometimes it's worth it, usually it doesn't. If you don't play on Stygian or Bloodmoon just back off and come back later. Retraining a lvl 6 bounty hunter from scratches is way harder than retaking one mission with a more optimized team. 8. Last thing (now really): use DLCs based on the fun you receive from them. I tried Crimson Court once and I am not planning to use an unmodded version of it ever again. Difficulty is fine. Invading other aspects of the game and forcing you with extreme aggression to focus on the DLC's storyline is a big no-no from me. If you like it or you wanna have the extra challenge, it's totally fine. For me I'd have loved it if it was just an additional area without curses (without anything forcing you to focus on it). Just exploring it, fighting bosses. The moment I realized bringing a Flagellant to the Ruins might be a good idea because 60% of the ruins are mosquitoes now ended that playthrough for me. I just felt it was bs.

Got my buffs from camping and the brew curio. Even remembered to use the dog treats😂 Swine prince hit me hard with those marked attacks, but I melted him down just as fast while my occultist healed. Right before he dies, he puts my Hellion to death door. Then my grave robber crits him for 60 or something and all that's left is Wilbur. Turns out Wilbur has a speed of 23 and just killed my Hellion instantly with a shriek 😂 That was one hell of a moment, but for some reason I didn't even feel that bad. I finished the boss fight, and I did everything I could. I thought maybe I should have self healed, but I don't think it would have made the difference. I guess I should have done it safer and just trained one or even two arbalast for this fight for mark removal. My Hellion fought and died well (even if ultimately, comically, from a pig shriek) and I don't know why I still feel weirdly satisfied and not that bothered by the loss. I've read up on other people losing heroes to Wilbur, and for some reason they also don't feel that bad. Just kinda cheesy that Wilbur is just so fast he can just lightly tap your heros into deathblow with his marks or shrieks😂 that joke achievement you get for dying to Wilbur is much more common than one would think 😅

My personal well-oiled machine is Vestal | Jester | Leper(/Highwayman) | Leper. The Jester compensate all the Leper's downside(slowness, low accuracy and crits) with his battle balad as well as arguably being thebest stress healer in the game. The lepers in the front tanks most of the damage and their crits can one-shoot most of the regular enemies in the game. The vestal provides really good healing as well as stun which helps you control and stall. If you want more versatility and if you know you are going to get shuffled (eg. Shuffling Horror), you can put an Highwayman in 2nd place, it will do an excellent job as well.

My favorite character is the Bounty Hunter. So I started going Occultist, Houndmaster, BountyHunter, BountyHunter. This team is so good it kinda trivializes the game. Houndmaster just holds the Evidence of corruption and dedicated marker. Occultist is healer and uses his eldritch pull move to clean up. Bounty Hunters just sit there and whack stuff, and they can doublestack their marks with the Houndmaster to destroy protection. It seems like it's a waste of an action to mark, but the bountyhunter just crushes out 30-50 damage a swing, and you can shut down a boss in 2-3 turns. I was really surprised how well it all worked, they get so many crits they dont need stress healers, they just chop it out. Amazing.

I am enjoying this game even though the number of dead crusaders, lepers and hellions i have make me kind of want to cry. So many died till i got the hang if things, i could not save my tanks.

The RNG is why I don't play the campaigns where you are time limited. I find it much more chill to just be able to wear the setbacks and come back again. It also allows me to spend the time to spoil my higher level heroes. Max equipment, max training, full treatment for negative quirks. I have a horrendous casualty rate for my level 0-2 characters as they just get the minimum resources needed until they prove themselves. But once they hit veteran they get the red carpet treatment. Although the disadvantage of taking my time is I often get distracted and play something else for a while. I think I've played about 200+ weeks so far but still haven't got anywhere near beating the game because I keep restarting when I forget where I'm at lol.

Hey ShuffleFM, glad you're still active with darkest dungeon. So, firstly i am one of the original backer like you lol (Dawn/Hellion -yeah my char is shit lol). Yet i've still haven't finished the game...(yeah..i know..i suck at it..) This summer tho i've decided with your help to erase this anomaly! I've been watching a lot of your video and making progress (i am at L3) but i feel like one of the tip i need (and couldn't find) is about roster composition. Now that i am set on finishing the game (i enjoy it too) i feel like the one thing that could really make me lose is that. So, out of the 29 places, i have : -3 crusaders (not sure if i need more or less tbh i feel reaching L3 that i might need 3 there is more unholy out there..) -2 PD (feel good about it don't think i need more) -1 Abo (don't really like the class but i lucked out with this one he's like a cove monster with every quirk against it..with his blight skill it feels useful). -2 Arbalest (wasn't keen on them at first but i begun to feel at L3 the strength of battlefield bandage and suppressing fire (fuck crit!)) -1 BH (that one i feel like i need more than one, at L3 the hook and stun and damage are really great) -2 GB (i don't feel i need more) -2 Hellion (one is focused bleed the other is a tank/crit with swan, not sure if i need that much) -2 HwM (this one sigh, i got 2 i barely bring them i am not sure i know how to play with them..I always get dodge even with a lot of accuracy..) -2 HdM (not sure i need that much, it's a nice unit tho but it feel really focused on for warrens and weald). -2 Jester (not sure again i know it's the best stress healer but i barely use them..) -1 Leper (ok, this one i feel i need more than one but i don't know which class i should cut off one) -1 MaA (same i feel reaching L3 that the guy is a must have and i should have more than one..) -2 Occultist (feels enough) -3 Vestal (maybe i need one less, at low level before my roster was full i felt i needed the 3 now..i feel i could go with one less). -1 Flagellant ( I am still learning to play with it, i don't feel confident having more) -2 ShB (I am farming Farmstead and their piercing armor skill is just..needed) -0 Antiquarian (man i don't have room for this shit lol) Sorry for the long post, sigh. I'd really need help for this, i looked for video but there is nothing about roster composition, team, classes explanation etc. Still, i feel roster is my biggest hurdle and the thing that making me suffer the most in the game. Thanks for the video and the help take care man!

Your roster looks fine tbh. It has a solid balance of damage, frontline, and backline. I can give recommendations but it comes down to who you feel comfortable using. If you aren't running into issues with team building then I wouldn't worry about it :)

@@ShuffleFM Ok, well, my only bother right now i am always struggling to find some people to put at place 2-3 (dps). front line is cool i'd even say i would be fine with one less; healer is short by 1 maybe (occultist) but dps, the thing is i don't use jester that much i only go with it on the farm, weald warrens and the courtyard. Because i only use him at Rank 3 with bleed (i don't like the moving around) and high way man, god i don't like him and don't use the ranged type because i always miss at critical moment and the melee one is a bit better but there is a bleed and a move forward and i don't like that. so you see there is 3 people i barely go with that's why i got the feeling i am missing dps. But i don't know if it's a good choice to reduce jester by 1 and no High way men and i have no idea what to replace them with.

Went into weald to fight champion hag in torchless. HWM, Jester, Vestal, Hellion. Fought shambler and survived, then I thought couple of hallway fights with Fungal Crawlers and was lucky to not lose 2 heroes. I retreated with 3 afflictions and 2 heroes close to deaths door. I think the weakest link in that team was HWM, he should have been replaced probably by BH in position 2, but he also did a lot of work on Shambler.

"lots of loot means you are doing well" well not really cuz i had to retreat on the baron mission (flagellant died and everyone else was afflicted) and i still earned like 20K gold and 24 crests + 6 of every other heirloom tl:dr tons of loot doesn't always mean doing well

CC missions are a special case, but I'd still say leaving with a lot of loot is still good. Makes you stronger in the long run.

I’m pretty early on still, I’m figuring things out cuz I’m trying now to look up SUPER specific guides. I went into a Dungeon with a dedicated Boss, and I ended with 0 provisions, but I still had to throw out some of my treasure, to pick up more specific treasure.

One time i had a lot of fun playing the darkest dungeon really bad intentionnally. Like, i took a save with the bank and lot of gold, so i had not to care about, and i played at sending 0/1/2 level heroes in the darkest dungeon, and push the further possible. I killed maybe... i dunno... 30 heroes over time, but i learned a lot about affliction and death door. Like, one time, i send a crusader wich spent maybe five or six turns at death door.

What should I do if I'm afraid of playing any medium level mission?
@levidebacker19983 жыл бұрын
Bring a second healer which supports your main healer (healing bandage arbalest or healing crusader). Flagellant is fine but most of his healing only happens once he is low hp.
@zedre76333 жыл бұрын
Medium missions are sometimes mote forgiving than short ones due to camping. If you get beat up in a single battle on a short venture you're boned, but on a medium one you can camp and heal/buff. Also don't be too stingy with camping, since battle buffs tend to last 4 battles sometimes early camping can be good.
@levidebacker19983 жыл бұрын
Also try to stall whenever possible in regular battles. What that means is you try to keep one weak enemy alive and try to heal up (or stress heal) your units before you kill the last enemy.

not too far into the game, my highest level character is 3 (my boy dismas) and reynauld also lvl 3, the reason they've lived so long is because I retreat whenever my stress gets dangerously high and am about to have a heart attack
@hariman77273 жыл бұрын
I found that even with afflictions, as long as you could bring the team back, I could either recover those heroes or dismiss them and build up new heroes. The puppet theater was the biggest boon in stress Management because that let me let people rest over time instead of having to either treat them or dismiss them. If the entire team had about 60 stress at most on average and no afflictions, I could leave the team to rest and just use other teams for a month. I took a rather brute Force approach to darkest dungeon though, as I sometimes took entire teams into dungeons with little care to whether they survived or not. After a certain point, I stopped trying to protect my heroes as much just to be able to power through everything. I was doing best after a mid to 3/4 of the way through breaking point where I had a solid enough roster that I could manage dungeons easier and build up new characters with only time invested. I lost a lot of heroes on my way to victory. I probably would have lost blood moon runs multiple times just because of that. Edit: I learned about the factors in number five after a certain point. Always check skills, always check armor and weapons, always check trinkets, and also check traits. That's just the start of the list though.
