Shug, Just took a 5-day 50-miler with my brothers on the Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas. Watched your video before finalizing my pack. Great trail. Had a great time. Perfect time of year in the Ozarks- no bugs, no other hikers, scenic views. Sit pad was used for everything from sittin' to changing clothes to a backdrop for a puppet show. Jk (or am I?). Viva la revolucion, Shug!

Awesome video! I'm getting more into backpacking and appreciate you talking about what is in your pack. I don't have all the fancy gear yet, but have got my pack down to about 23 lbs. Much more comfortable then the 40-50 lb pack I used to carry. Now I got more room for the fun stuff.

Another fabulous video, thank you very much, Shug! Best thing I learned: layer your hats. I asked my wife to sew me a second hat for the outer layer right after I watched your video. You and I are of similar ages and have a similar backpacking philosophy in terms of gear weight. Here's the best tip I can offer you in return: ditch your stool and replace it with a folding chair from REI or similar, for example, Helinox. The volume is less, the weight is the same or less (mine from REI is 750 grams), and it feels great to kick back in a comfy chair and sip your coffee while the sun rises over the wilderness. When I first got the chair, I did not think I would bring it on all hikes. I anticipated only using it with minimal elevation gains. But it changes the whole experience so much that I bring it on every trip now, even if I'm hiking up 4000 feet. Thanks again, and keep the camera rolling! Love the music!

This was truly insightful, Shug. I'm going to have to watch this several more times and have a notepad and biro handy when I do. The amount of clothing you carry has me reeling.. ;) As we're coming into summer here in the southern hemisphere, I'll have plenty of time to prepare for next winter using this video as a guide. I haven't snow camped for many years and my old gear is either worn out or just too heavy. I sweat a lot in my hiking clothes and when I get the camp this fellow wants to be warm. Believe me I wore it all. It does kinda look like a lot but it's all light and layering is the key.

The amount of clothes amazed me too. Makes me a bit worried because I'm supposed to be going out for a two-night trip tomorrow and I will be facing temperatures similar to what was outlined in the video. I was not planning on taking near that many clothes. I have been in this weather before and been fine, so I'm sure I will be again, but it was eye-opening to see what someone else brings. Shug ... I picked up some Salomon X Ultra 2 Mid GTX boots (good grief, that's a mouth-full) late last Spring and love them. I've used them on every trip since then and if I can still find them, I'll buy another pair when these wear out. I'm old enough to feel every bit of the damage I did to my knees and ankles playing soccer from the age of 5 all the way through college, and I definitely notice the difference these have made for me. I'd love to be able to hike with a trail runner, but I know I'd roll my ankle and it would all fall apart from there. The Salomons are comfortable, and that extra support of a mid has actually saved me from ankle injuries on the trail more times than I can count. Great boots.

I got a lot of Franken gear too. From E-track hammock hooks for backstage truck camping, to repurposed 1500 lb load titanium lighting safety cables that allow me to slap a hammock up practically anywhere and everywhere-including off of the corner of privacy fences, ceiling I beams, when used with webbing-from any tree or trees. Living in a large city nowhere near the wilderness has created me some pretty unique gear. Even have some old cammo-net that gets used to hide my pack when doing stealth mode camping. Even repurposed an old higher quality camcorder pack into an under seat mini pack for my bike. I can fit my entire hammock system into it

Packing for the upcoming trip is spot on. Also, it's true to keep with some level a base system that works. As far as UL (and this is just my opinion) when your pack weight get down to a light a comfortable carry what's a pound here and there. UL can get into a contest or challenge area and that's fine and fun. I'm more your speed in regards to weight. That's a well seasoned pack full of good supplies brother Shug. All secure!

I just hiked in a new pair Salomon Quest 4D boot over 20 miles and are now my favorite pair of boots also. No break in was necessary. Previously I wore, and still have, Asolo Fugitive boots, which are a bit heavier and will probably still wear them on occasion. Thanks for your informative vid. Thank you for a very informative presentation.I was somewhat surprised not to see more wool-based clothing. Synthetics are very lightweight and fast-drying but perform badly when wet and also stink like a freshly opened can of surströmming after a sweaty day or two on the hoof.

I love those Solomons those r the shoes that seal team 6 wore in taking out bin laden, they have a shoe on display in Washington and after getting a pair after watching your first video when you got them, I know why. They are super comfortable and warm with med wool socks.

Thanks for showing your pack's contents Shug! It's good to get ideas from anyone that's learned the hard way via experience! I agree with you that I'd rather carry a little extra weight to ensure that I stay warm! I currently have a Kelty Ridgeway 0-Degree Mummy Bag that I'm using in my Hammock that has kept me toasty all the way down to 45F nights (haven't camped colder yet). Unfortunately it weighs Eight Pounds, way to bulky, and I still don't have an under quilt for my hammock. On my 'to get' equipment list is a dedicated bottom and top quilt that weigh less than my current slug of a sleeping bag. They should also be easier to FIT in the pack as both will be physically smaller in size. I just need a non-down version as I have a slight allergy to down and prefer to avoid it. One thing for certain is that a Hammock makes for a good nights sleep! :-)

Hey shug! I found your channel whilst doing research for a trip I plan on doing to Alaska this year in May. I've actually become quite hooked to watching your videos. While I'm still undecided if hammocks are going to be a viable option for me (having never slept in one and it being quite an investment). Regardless, I enjoy watching your content. Whooooo indeed! I leaned about "bear bags" from this video... Here in the UK, bears are things kids have by their pillows to help them sleep. Crossing the length of Africa, scorpions and snakes were the only really scary thing to fear in the camp. :) stay awesome!

Hi Shug. Since I last viewed this gear vid of yours; I was interested in your Coglan's clock/temp device. Like you said; they don't make them any more. I did come across an ACU+RITE window temp gauge for around 5 dollars. It doesn't have a clock; (I wear a watch anyways); but does keep a record of the high/low temps and resets every 24 hrs. I took off the rubber window suction cup and replaced it with a carabiner. It's not water proof; but looks pretty study. Time will tell. Have a great summer. ~ Steve

30-40° and wet can be more difficult than -10--20°. So these are interesting tips. Yes, waterproof mittens! I always have at least one wool scarf-year round. One thing I've learned (again and again) that you're probably way way past, is it takes about a month of backpacking to be able to know where everything is in the pack and get rid of all the stuff you're sure you need, but don't. I've got a trick I figured out in Japan, where you have to take your shoes off everywhere. Plastic shoehorn and...skinny shock cord as the top shoe laces. I slide into my boots, make a couple of turns abound the 'studs' of my hiking boots, hook the loop on the top stud. Done. Always a tail above the loops to grab on to. Faster than anything but flipflops. When you have to scoot out to pee in the middle of the night... You can make an extra pass for tighter. Even climbing mountain trails I didn't need to change the basic configuration. Guess I better make a video... Thanks Shug.

Great instruction! I would suggest that you keep your drivers license (or whatever kind of governmental ID that you have) AND ANY IMPORTANT MED INFO, on a lanyard around your neck (on your body, instead of in your pack). Thanks for all you've shared!

Love it love it love it, a good reference video, Loads of good information, always pick up some good tips in vids like this. I know its not in the whole lollygagging spirit but have you ever thought about getting someone to write an autobiography or camping book for you, would be awesome. Shug, Love the videos! I am always interested to see what comes next. Q: This is your base load (without food, fuel etc.) The pack looks full. Where do you put the expendables? My load is similar to you (tent rather than hammock) but pretty much the same. I need the Catalyst for 4-5 day trips. All secure.
