As usual these videos are the most helpful gear overviews out there. Being able to see the two sizes overlapped and get a sense of the pole mods is fantastic. That porch mode with the poles is super slick. Warbonnet should give you commission for the Thunderfly with poles I'm likely to buy!

As always, well done, Shug. Where those tarp pole kit poles cross the ridge-line, you might want to add a dab of Silicone on the ridge-line. I had an 11 x 9 polyester tarp, and although it did not stretch much when wet, it still adsorbed 16 oz of water. I think Polyester's greatest strength is for those that base camp as they resist sun degradation better than Nylon. Nylon is also more forgiving because it does stretch. Enjoy your new tarp toys.

I am on the part when you are in NY in your book now. Sounds like quite the trip. You must have taken copious notes to recall all that. Craving NYC pizza now. I also get the letting YT folks gift you as I face the same thing and feel funny about it. But if you are sharing something like you did then I can see doing it. Like people giving a tip. Sometimes after my shows folks come up to tip me and I used to always refuse and they seemed sorta put -off. Now I always take it as it takes a lot for them to come and offer. Whooooooo Buddy)))))

NY pizza is the best! I never planned to write a book but had my YT videos and tons of pics that I used to recall where and when, then a bunch of research for the details. Yeah, accepting “mail magic” was hard at first but like you said, it’s good for everyone involved - plus it helps viewers be a part of the adventure. I could never have finished if not for the help. Some of us have remained good friends and it was fun to give back to future hikers when I was able. Shug, you do a lot for the hiking community - in education and entertainment - more than you know.

The biggest advantage of the mini fly is good end coverage from a small tarp with only an 11' ridge line. Comes in handy when the available tree options are closer than ideal.

I have the minifly in the silpoly and Bushwhack camouflage. I replaced a cuben fiber tarp with it for one reason... The end peaks they have on the mini fly. That was a great idea because they help to stop any driving rain from coming in at either end. Also the Warbonnet Blackbird in the 70 D double bottom hammock is idea for buggy areas. I camp in Florida and mosquitoes are a problem most of the time. They will bite threw a single bottom hammock to get to any body part that's touching the material. Camping in the blackbird I have never been bitten.

Proposal Prior my Finally Great guy that Alex: I picked up that used Multicam Blackbird XCL here in early Spring 2022, and it is a beautiful hammock. I do not really like those WB tarp tie outs: I like the quick line tensioners: I am Lazy & Shug might be a bit of a knot man, not to be confused with a knotty man...lol...good work buddy! I have one of those Wilderness Innovations Hammock Ponchos coming from Perry Peacock. He is the classic KZbin character of the West. I told him about your work. I will keep you posted on that hammock poncho thing. Now & then you have to go onto something different, new challenges...innovate. Awesome work Amigo: all secure here in Sector G. Haha...nice...I never understood those wasps...just glad they are metal...you got lines all over like you are gonna' snag a big fat trout & have an Alaskan-style smoke session. Hmmmnm..Alaaska.. You ever been? Could be an idea for the Ultimate Expedition: get one in before the finally. We have to get you & Perry out there..all the classics...I am the grunt & extra camera man... I thought about that Isle Royal too, or maybe out West somewhere...Great Lakes Region: Porcupine Mountains & Keewenaw has been on my radar a few years, maybe a decade...hmmnn...that would be do-able. Over & Out! Happy Trails & Trials!

The pole mods are excellent until it gets a little windy then not having the side pullouts tied to trees and such gets a little dicey. I have the superfly in 20D silpoly and really enjoy it. In regards to the use of the "tarp poles", it will be interesting if someone has a different way to attach them. I made two poles for my WB Cloudburst tarp, I use with their bridge hammock. I attached them similar to the way you do and for what it is worth they have stayed put every time. I have had about 10 trips with them so far and even in pretty windy conditions they have "stayed put". Thanks for the preview of the new tarps.

Not sure if anyone else has said it below, but I made my own Superfly out of silpoly because I personally prefer the material. It doesn't stretch as bad (if at all) with moisture like silnylon does in my experience. I have the Warbonnet Ground Tarp also made out of silpoly, feels thinner than my 1.1oz silpoly DIY Superfly, but it also could be the feeling that the camo pattern leaves on the material. Considering the Thunderfly for my summer/fall adventures and keep my DIY Superfly for winter and foul weather.

@@shugemery very affordable indeed! My family bought me a sewing machine for my last birthday and I've been itching to make my own tarp for a while now. I currently use a Kelty Noah 12, and its VERY heavy! (~3# fully equipped!). Thinking the best/easiest/fastest way to cut pack weight is a new, lighter tarp. Heck, maybe I'll buy the Thunderfly, then make myself a smaller version, (Minifly), for mid-summer excursions. Really like the beaked design, as weather here in the Pac NW can be pretty unpredictable. Been snowed on in August once or twice...

justin vandenbroek I have the superfly and absolutely love it. Yes It's heavier than these options, but you have soooooo many ways to use it. All the way closed and down on the ground in the cold wind, to porch mode in mild weather. Simply love it.

Hey Shug, what’s your opinion on using small Amsteel for tarp tie outs? I’m contemplating 1/16” UCRs or whoopie slings. Whatcha think?
@shugemery

They can be hard to loosen up if too tight. A bit overkill in my opinion. I tried a whoopie on a ridgeline once and did not take to it.

My experience with WB is they seam seal the tarp ridgeline but you need to seal the panel pull-outs yourself. You showed some seam seal with the mini-fly - that doesn’t have pull-outs. Is that back up if you need to refresh the ridgeline or does the mini-fly ridgeline need to be seam sealed out of the box?
@shugemery
@shugemery 3 жыл бұрын
I had it from another tarp. I always seal my ridgeline although they say you don't need too. seal their ridgeline due to how they sew it. Easy to do and never want a failure. Many don't though and are OK. Never heard of too many problems.

Hey Shug, why not tie a little rubber o-ring on the spreader bar ties? You can just slip the o-ring on the bar end and not be concerned with slack or loose knot.

I've thought about going hammock, but I will admit I am still intimidated by them for some reason. It's a lot of stuff, plus the underquilt, and I often hear of hammockers getting too cold at night. I just bought a Z Packs Duplex tent, so not in a hurry to spend big on a hammock. Maybe someday.

I have a question on tarp materials. Do you know if the Sil Nylon Tarps are more durable than the Dyneema Cuben Fiber Tarps? Just wondering how "bomb" proof the Dyneema Cuben fiber material is. And which takes less maintenance when it comes to seem sealing and keeping waterproof.
@shugemery
@shugemery 6 жыл бұрын
Cuben needs no seam sealing, does nor absorb water, is expensive, is translucent, hard to tear on the pull but easy to poke a hole in. Can be patched with duct tape. Sil nylon is tough. Absorbs water, cheaper, cannot be repaired with duct tape.
