Great advice on setting the snow stakes, plus a look at the stove setup, tools & attire. Looks like it was nice out there. The viewers can understand what it feels like with the wet glove advice & things that don't freeze all up so easy. I bet keeping batteries warm & power up is plenty a challenge. Fine knowledge passed along here.

I enjoy living life vicariously through Shug's winter camping videos. I have camped out in the hot and the cold in my younger years but I was born set in my ways and if I don't get that hot shower every morning, I am miserable the rest of the day. I admire people that are not like that. Keep up the good work Shug!

Great videos, Shug! Next weekend I'll be doing a solo (not sure if there will be snow) with my brand new Blackbird XLC. My first hammock, and my thanks to you and the Marine for all your excellent videos. You helped tremendously in my decision making process. I'm going to order the zero degree Wookie, but first I need to know which direction I sleep in as I'm a left side sleeper. Brandon suggested I sleep in it before ordering which I think is a great idea. I'm going out where I can bail out the the truck if things go horribly wrong. Don't expect that, but you're a great teacher and I've been paying attention! At 62, I'm just too old to sleep on the ground much anymore and hammocks sound divine! I'm going to use a sleeping pad and a couple of wool blankets in place of an underquilt along with some reflectix. Solo hiking is mostly how I get out in the woods and I'm looking forward to doing some backpacking this year. Nice to know at my age I can still do this. I was up at 10,000 feet on Mt Charleston about 8 weeks ago at a 3,000 year old bristlecone pine we call Raintree. We don't know what it calls itself! :) Cheers, and thanks!

Shug, another great video. Even though I've been winter camping for more than 40 years in New England, I always seem to learn something new from your adventures. That being said, I would like to offer a tip -- wrapping the aluminum shafts of your shovel with hockey tape (or athletic tape) will make a world of difference in reducing the conductive heat loss, even if you do have gloves on. Hope this is helpful. Keep those videos coming! - Wayne

Hey Shug your making me miss winter camping, -26 f was my coldest, that was tent life. Hammocks are so much better for worn-out old men, been listening and I am getting some cold weather, thanks for your advice

Hey Shug, thanks for the great winter solo and lots of tested info and tips. --- And now the other thing: I am so glad that I finally hear from another human being that he hears voices in the running water of a small stream! No joking, I realized that this happened to me on my first solo trip up in Norway. I was getting ready for the night up in the mountains and I was sure I could hear other people coming up the trail, even though it was practically far too late for anyone to still be hiking . When I would focus on the voices, I could hear nothing at all. Then when I went on with some sort of distraction, map reading etc. suddenly I could hear them again. Focus, and they were gone. - It took me quite a while to figure out that it was either "streammaids" :o) or a kind of auditory illusion that would vanish whenever you concentrate on the sounds consciously. And I still get that illusion from time to time, only now I somehow can stay in between not focusing and focusing on it, so that I can hear both the stream babbling and the "voices" at the same time - quite like listening to the "wilderness" radio station in the background without paying real attention. Have a nice winter! Best greetings, Tim

Nice trip, only winter camped a handful of times but loved it. We use a tent and staking was difficult. Found the way you stake in snow very interesting and will give that a try when we get out again. That frost bib is awesome too, but that open toilet, woo buddy!

What a great video Shug. You even touched on the how to anchor your tarp in frozen-ground-yet-not-much-snow conditions. Was just contemplating that as Ima head out sometime soon in similar conditions here in Norway. Thanks for sharing, awesome stuff! WoooBudddey!!

Glad that helped. I plan to someday fly over to camp in Norway. Was there years ago on cruise ships and was very impressed with the people and the land. And the desserts.
