I've been devouring your videos. I'm planning on doing the AT next year. Jut for giggles I pulled out a hammock i bought 3 years ago and never used. I couldn't get it set right. It has no ridge line. I still slept as well or better than I do in my bed. So now I'm shopping for a hammock setup to use instead of a tent. Thank you for your time and shared wisdom. I will be putting it to great use.

My 20 Degree HG UQ arrived and i can't wait to try it , real nice stitching good adjustment . If i had a WB Hammock i would have gone for the Wooki that bit of extra fabric must help with the chill. I just got a Warbonnet Eldorado for Christmas! Whooo Buddy!!! I’m watching all the Wooki vids trying to figure out how I’m going to get my current quilt attached. I’m going to be attempting to rig up my four pound down comforter under it when I go camping for about a week here soon. Four Pounds!?!? It was the best $10.00 I ever spent on camping gear! I’m sure I’ll be getting a Wooki at some point. I’m trying to lighten my load while not spending much and staying comfortable in the cold...haha, yeah, wish me luck with that. I might end up cutting my heavy comforter in half on a diagonal and making two top quilts and I can pretend that I’m buying a Wookie and getting two topquilts for $10.00!!! I think that’s called a Wooki mind trick. ...I had just gotten a nice, affordable, warm, system going for winter that would just barely fit into my backpack and now I’ve got to figure it all out on my first new hammock in years. Man, talk about difficult problems in life! Oh well, I’ll have about a week in 20 and 30 degree weather to figure it out. I’ll be car camping so weight doesn’t matter, I’m just trying to get everything whittled down and optimize my system while keeping it affordable. I’m getting there, and your videos help me. shugemery : Well I got my cheap rigged up quilt all situated. It’s kept me pretty warm in the freezing rain - I’m in a frozen cloud right now, no flakes just a mist of frozen stuff floating in the freezing air. I woke up with sheets of ice on my tarp this morning. I stayed dry and pretty warm last night. My only issue is that on my first camping trip in the Eldorado I’m not getting to enjoy the big new hammock. The way I’ve got my quilt attached isn’t allowing me to get the diagonal lay without the paracord squeezing me in. So I think you’ve got me sold on the Zero Degree Wookie. It sure is expensive watching your videos! ...But my hammocking sure is getting nicer. :D

Haha...I just re-watched this video and checked to see what I commented in the past. I'm much more comfy than I was when making my first comment. This comment is being typed as I lay in my 0°F Wooki with a 20°F topquilt in 40° weather just loving life right now! Whoooo Buddy!! ...and I learned a new trick on this trip. I use my rain-jacket as a partial topcover over my bugnet. It just keeps the breeze off of my face and keeps my nose just a few degrees warmer. At 40° it makes a very noticeable difference and doesn't cost me any weight or bulk because I always have my rain-jacket. I had previously been using a Snugpak Jumgle Blanket XL as a full-length insulated topcover. But due to the weight I am exploring my lower comfort limits without it. At a certain temperature and wind-speed it will certainly be worth it's two-pound weight again, but I need to find that point.

I know this isn't the normal time of year to be watching and commenting on cold weather quilts, but I just ordered myself a Hammock Gear 20° Econ Burrow to compliment my 0° Wooki and have been re-watching my favorite insulation videos. Hammock Gear just got done doing a nice sale that I had to take advantage of. I figured out (finally - after seeing your lovely assistant) how the gap in the Wooki isn't a problem! It's hard to notice when laying in it toasty warm, but every underquilt has a gap somewhere, it just seems like a smaller issue because it comes up and wraps around the hammock (wasting weight) with other designs. The Wooki is magical because anywhere you lay on the hammock there's down touching you and working effectively. The other underquilts just look like there's no gap, but in actuality there is - between the topquilt and the hammock and the underquilt there will always be a gap until your body is pressed against a specific area. The shockcord systems in other underquilts make them seem more sealed, but it's ineffective down unless it is actually touching the hammocker. The Wooki removes the unnecessary down and maximizes what is there. No matter where I lay on my Wooki I have a lofty barrier between myself and the cold without a whole bunch of extra down. Yes, there may be a loose spot where I'm not touching tightly, but wherever I roll it ends up closely enveloping me. I kind of wished upon a time that Warbonnet would add some shockcord to it to make the gap less prevalent, but I really don't know if there would be a tangible benefit.

That lil Warbonnet loose spot has never made me cold either. It just woks great. Just gotta be on it and have the hammock hung right to slide you in the sweet spot. Glad you're getting all warm.

Just scored a used "old version" multicam XLC from Ryan Dye of Indiana...beautiful & comfy. One guy thought the toggles had to do with the underquilt, and Warbonnet stated that the toggles needed to be connected to preserve the integrity of the old-style net (paraphrase). I have yet to mess with it & see exactly what they connect to, aside from maybe slipping them under the loop around the man bun, brain, whipping. But yeah...awesome hammock. Warbonnet refered to it as "highly desireable". I see why you like them. Always wanted one. You would like this 2013ish hammock I scored: beautiful multicam. Very impressed by it. The guy at Warbonnet wanted me to sell it to him if I ever decided to, stating that it was a hard-to-find classic. Feels great.

I'm really glad you made this video, I was just out with a friend yesterday fiddling around with the hammocks. I have the xlc blackbird with the wookie 0, and he has the xlc with the 0 incubator. I'm not as impressed with the wookie as I am with the incubator. As the wind started blowing it was getting into the gaps and letting the heat out, and there really doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it. I kinda wish there was some kind of adjustment on it. I might give it one more time out, I really want to like it. I love every other product I got, the superfly is an awesome tarp, the hammock is so comfortable, and the mamba quilt is seriously a nice warm quilt. maybe I should've gotten extra fill.

Maybe try migrating your down...meaning give it a good shake to distribute the down. Or put it in the dryer on low for a short time. Are you speaking of the gap by shoulder? Did you have a tarp pitched?

To fiddle or not to fiddle, that is the question. I just bought a Blackbird XLC. Have been using it with no bottom insulation at all, but have only been out when it's warm. I'm shopping under quilts. The Wookie looks like the ultimate great choice to mate with this hammock. Just one concern I have: While "set it and forget it" sounds great, sometimes having a little adjustability can be a good thing, especially when it's just a little warmer than your temp rating and you'd like to vent a little to cool down. I was looking at the Yeti and the Greylock - both are 3/4 length, lighter, and just plain awesome. But a 3/4 length would require a little more fiddling and a pad under the lower legs. I carry a Z seat, so I'll have a pad. I'm soliciting thoughts on no fiddling vs. possibly a little more flexibility in temp range.

it doesn't get as cold temperature level here in the south , but our humidity makes it more damp and bone chillingly different cold . that's why when i camp down here I don't use ANY goose down . ive used wiggys bags for many years , and they work well for me . not ultralight , but worth the extra weight . and I'm a cold natured sleeper . so I simply use a military foam pad in my warbonett blackbird hammock , and an ultima thule bag . if its really damp I keep a heavy wool blanket as well....in teens down to -0 . always warm . but that's just my choice . everything else is much similar to what you and many others tote . ive always taken and used an over tarp too . ive used warbonett blkirds and xlc`s for years now....only kind I'm comfortable in so far....ive tried others but still like the war bnt ones best . thanks for all the great vids over the yrs shug.....ive sent em out on my pages now for over 4 years now . you keep many informed and laughing !

Just picked up my new winter wookie this morning from the mail man. My new set up is almost complete. Blackbird xlc and winter top cover, xl wookie, Hammock Gear down hood, warbonnet superfly tarp w/snake skins. Will be ordering in a few days from jacks r better a Big Meadows zero deg. topquilt (overquilt?) to complete the new set up. I don't want to get into a contest with you about who's got the bigger "manhood", but... MY wookie is a Scandinavian temp, not some little girlie-boy zero deg. quilt for wimps!!!

This is fantastic! I can't help wonder, though, why they don't just make it weight-bearing so it can be used as a hammock by itself? One less thing to haul around on your hike if the hammock and underquilt are a single unit. You could carry a regular hammock for warm weather hiking and carry this one for cool/cold weather hiking. Still, it's the best design I've seen for an underquilt. Well done, Warbonnet!

I was reading about this. I was curious about the shoulders. Seems to me.. that's my cold spot. My feet are usually good but my shoulders... get a chill, probably because I'm a mover and a shaker while I'm sleeping. This might be my new setup for next winter. I do like the removable bug net option. It's so buggy here in the summer.. the ENO Guardian works best for me. I got so eat'n up last year through the bottom of my hammock. I slipped of my pad I had as a barrier between me and the skeeters

That's why I ordered the full length UQ from EE before they came out with this one. I just ordered a top quilt for my wife about 2 hours ago again from EE. I had a good test last weekend at Pictured Rocks.

I also have 2 Warbonnet blackbirds (one the XlC) and 2 WB 3/4 under quilts. I've noticed that the bungee draws at each end tend to be quite tight making the UQ very curved and not wanting to conform to the filled out shape of the hammock during the night, which means the UQ will often ride up one side of my body leaving my backside exposed. I learned to place a thin piece of shockcord on each end of the UQ and loop over the guide line so the UQ doesn't slip to one side during the night. This solved my problem. Admittedly, the coldest I've been is 18 degrees F, but my set up with the 3/4 UQ kept me toasty warm.( I have a Hammock Gear top quilt that has a snap around collar so it doesn't slip during the night.) Seems this new WB UQ design was made to address the slippage issue, but that's a lot of extra weight and space in my opinion. :)

Shug, if this going to be my one UQ, 20 deg - 3 season quilt...how do you adjust it for warmer weather? I saw another video where you loosen the tightness of the quilt for warmer weather. And in another video you actually set it up and then moved it out from underneath completely with the suggestion that in the middle of the night when it gets cold, you just reach down and pull it into place. Can you do these things with the wookie? I just got my first hammock, WBBB, and want to make sure I buy the best UQ. I appreciate your advice and you videos!

Great video, Shug! I think I'm going to start saving for one of those hammock/underquilt combos. Question for you. I'm 62, in decent shape, about 172 lbs. I live in Las Vegas and hike a lot on Mt Charleston where the hikes mostly start around 8,000 feet elevation. Thinking of the day hike gone wrong, could one improvise an underquilt from an emergency tarp such as the Grabber? This would be the time I'm not intending to stay overnight but circumstances are such that I have to. For example, on a summit hike I once wrenched my knee. Had that been worse I would have had to stay overnight and wait for help. I go solo a lot. This past Saturday daytime temps were about 38 degrees at noon around 9,300 feet. I expect it would be quite cold overnight, possibly under 20 degrees F. I'd value your opinion.

Hello Shug. I am puzzled about Warbonnet under quilt weights from their chart. All their underquilt baffles are the same size; they just put more down in for the increased temperature ratings. I thought it was the loft in the baffles that trapped the air and made it warm. UPDATE: Warbonnet uses increasingly larger baffles as the temperature ratings change. They are very helpful with answering questions.

All I can say is I've never been cold in their gear. All that down in the winter ones lofts up well. Maybe you could ask them for a better [e-mail]

@@TheFbiFilesRepeat Basically they have several temperature rated options, as we know. The 2 warmest options have a smaller baffle size and each option has more down in it. Then with the colder rated options, the baffle size is larger and those 2 options have progressively larger amounts of down in them, and finally their coldest rated under quilts have the larger sized baffles and stuffed accordingly. So in essence, if you order a 20 degree quilt stuffed with 3 ounces of over stuffing it really is the same as the 10 degree quilt, and the prices work out to show that. So, BOTH the amount of down AND the baffle size are part of the formula as to the temperature rating and not ONLY the baffle size.

Hey Shug, Question about an under quilt upgrade I want to do. I have an original warbonnet double blackbird, I have been looking at the Wooki since its made for a blackbird but have also looked at the incubator from Hammock gear, which looks like it will hug you better, although the set up for the Wooki seem easier, Not sure which one would work best for me. I know you have used all different brands of hammocks and make allot of Videos for other vendors so if you cant help me do to conflict of interest i understand. But knowing your crazy ole self you will give me your best answer. Thanks for your time sir.

They both work great. HG UQ may take a bit more to fit. The WB Wooki is easy and totally works. Many worry about it not hugging your shoulder but in my opinion it is just something new to folks. Your TQ covers your shoulder and the Wooki has proven itself to me. Though so has my HG UQs so you wave a win/win situation. The Wooki has no shockcord pressing against you.

The solution to the floppy sides of the Wooki is simple; a well adjusted under-quilt protector takes care of eliminating the shoulder/foot gap without undue compression or addition of tensioning modifications. I always carry (and often use) an UQP anyway.

They are two different hammocks. Both comfy. WB has a shelf and bugnet way up off face. I do have videos on both.

I have a chance to buy a 0 degree wookie regular, question is do you think I can make it work on my xlc? Also do you know if the quilt part that's sewn to the hammock material is the same as the xlc as far as length for head to toe coverage?

There is a 10' Wooki for the 10' Blackbird and an 11' Wooki for the XLC. Also need to know if you are head right or head left lay. Check their website.

so in a hammock you get max loft with the underquilt. Just curious how that would work on ground cuz I don't know my knots yet. Tho it might not matter since I'm in Florida. =oP

Never tried the Dutchware Chameleon, but the WB Blackbird is amazing. I get a full night's rest, lay very flat, and love it more than my own bed. Hope that helps. lol

Not had enough time on my Wooki to say for sure but it sure works. All UQs are good if you use them properly. Trust your gut.

Well Thank'ya Shug. I guess my theory is you can't beat anyone at there own game. The Whooki was made as a direct fit for the Warbonnet so I'd suppose that it's no fuss'in feature is the big sell point and good down is down. When it comes, you'll all see it on my channel. It will but a lot of folks have to adjust the footend of the Wooki with some shock cord to make it a bit longer or shorter so it will stay right up against the hammock.

Yes....thus the name UNDERQuilt! You would lose the warmth were it in the hammock to to down compression.

Droisntns word is yes, on hammock forums, perhaps with some modification to the end with the rubber band and clip as shut said in the video. XL wooki for 11 foot, regular wooki for 10 foot. Personally waiting on some more info on this before I pull the trigger on a Dutch Chameleon, myself.

Not really but some folks still like to use them to keep some warmer air in. Though you can get frost build up inside. I do not use the bug net in winter but like to keep it on my XLC hammock to retain the footbox.

Hey Shug, i love your videos! I am a guy from Denmark, and i really want an underquilt. But to import from the states will cost me around 600 dollars worth so importing underquilts is very expensive. Therefore i just want to ask you this question. If you had to buy one underquilt, what would it be? Im torn between the greylock, the phoenix, the incubator or the warbonnet yeti. I know that this is a tough question because you probably use many of these uq on different trips, but i can only buy one, so what would you do ? Im 6.2 feet. Thanks (:
