Your hammock tutorials on KZbin, as anyone on Hammock Forums will attest, are the junior college of hammock camping. Your trip report videos, especially in the deep Minnesota winters, are a pure joy to watch. They serve as the masters seminar in applied Hammockology. I don't know I would have ever considered hammock camping in freezing temps without knowing Shug can do it in crazy sub-freezing temps. Thank you for posting videos for the last 17 years.

Film what you want and show what you want. As a viewer, I'm 40% here for the information, 40% for the presentation, and 20% for the je ne sais quoi. People can become trapped by what they think others expect from them, and that probably goes double or triple for someone who performed for much of their life. The same drive and charisma that made you good at performing also can trap you. Just remember that it's all an illusion, and nothing is forcing you to do this but your notion of who you are to yourself and others. Cheers shug! You have our respect, adoration , and sufferance no matter what. ;)

Well, according to me you're a young man because I'm 75. Even though I don't do videos, I wouldn't even know how to begin to do a video of myself, backpacking and hammock camping, or even camping in the back of my truck in a Joy Tutus truck tent. I don't consider you old at all. If you are old physically. Yes, you're up in your years but in the heart no you're like a young boy that wants to have fun in the sun or in the snow? Or even the rain. We thoroughly enjoy your videos.Sean (Shug), and maybe if you cut it down to every other week or even once a month, we still look forward to you to that special video of you and your escapades. You're one of a kind and don't ever change the way you are because then you wouldn't be, SHUG. Sending you much love. Who knows what tomorrow brings? Hopefully more videos from our dear friend, Shug.

I've been watching for years, and sat with you for a bit before one of your shows at the MN State Fair. So I want to thank you for that! I've stuck with you and feel a connection to you and your other watchers. I was always from a camping family but your videos totally changed my life by introducing me to hammocking. It's such an improvement over what I did as a kid and growing up. To be able to work so hard and earn a few moments in the quiet, while still hanging among the trees in total comfort, is an experience to strive for. My wife and I only go by hammock now (after some trial and error) and have found such immense joy, appreciation, and satisfaction in our trips to the woods because of what we learned from you. I mean... I'm not even sure what else to say. Thank you so much for this channel and sharing your skills with us all.

When I first got into hammock camping 9 years ago, I stumbled across your videos and have been subscribed ever since. I've always found your content to be a great blend of entertainment and informative. I spent the first 43 years of my life living in Oregon which in some ways is similar but in many ways, so different than the areas you show in your videos. In April 2022 I moved to the UP of Michigan and after watching so much of your content, the environment almost seems familiar. If that makes sense? I've always enjoyed your humor, love of nature and authentic vibe. A sad part of our modern reality is that the need for money to survive seeps in and kind of gets into everything we try to do. For me, someone asking me to "like" and "subscribe" feels like a pushy used car salesman. If your content is useful or entertaining to me, I ALREADY KNOW how to press like and subscribe! I have tried filming hiking videos while on solo day hikes before....it's not as easy as it looks. I always get the feeling that I'll run into someone hiking while I'm awkwardly talking into my camera with no one else around. Also, the squirrels just think it's weird.

During Covid I started backpacking, specifically hammock camping. It’s your fault, yes it’s totally your fault. I have always hiked , often putting in 15 -20 mile days. But after happening upon your KZbin I asked myself why don’t I start spending nights out on the trail. I’ve learned a lot about backpacking from you, but truth be told I watch you for the characters you portray. You are the Robin Williams of the outdoors. I could never get enough of you and the maple king, it reminds me of simpler times. It so great to see two,old friends cracking each other up with your ridiculousness. Hey Shug. I’ve messaged you before a few times sporadically, but I mostly lurk in the shadows. Watching and learning. But I’ve been following you since I was battling cancer in 2011/2. Your videos were always playing in my hospital room where we all had a good laugh. Most importantly was my kindled desire to have a central theme to all my activities with my kids and their friends. Hammocks are such a compact, inexpensive, and accessible item that we carry them everywhere. I’m not a hiker, it’s not my thing. My son and I fly a plane. My wife and I sail a small yacht. Overlanding in my Bronco with buddies. The kids in the local youth group with HAM radio, kayaking, canoeing, and orienteering where I volunteer. Everything is done with hammocks. There’s nothing like slinging a hammock across the saloon in my boat or under the wing of my plane. Set up a tarp and run some amateur radio in the shade with youths. The amazing part is that the mothers of all these mid-teen kids comment on how handy the kids are with sewing machines, since we used to make our own gear. Some still do, while others, like me, have moved on to a Blackbird or something. All because I stumbled across your videos while recovering from surgery.

10 years ago I became very ill. So ill I was told that this was it… not long to go in this world. I felt very bad indeed, really sick. I was lying in bed drenched in sweat feeling awful yet again, not able to sleep, not able to really be awake so I decided to watch KZbin. One of your videos was recommended and I remember the thumbnail was a winter scene. I watched you winter camping and I thought, what the hell is this madman doing, I could never do that 😊. But your personality hooked me in and your videos lifted my spirits. Long story short I’m still watching and I obviously didn’t die, much to the chagrin of my consultant, he hates to be proven wrong lol 😂. Your winter camping films helped me through those dark days and when I have a particularly bad flare up I go back and watch a few, for old times sake. I watch ‘em as you post ‘em too ha. I even bought a shug t-shirt! Thank you 🙏 shug and May Gd bless you in all you do, do less do more ‘sup to you buddy, Im just along for the ride. Bought myself a really cool 70’s lamp recently too 😂 I’m 62, must be an age thing.

First off...glad you are well and alive!! Winter is long here so winter camping is a must. I've come to really enjoy it in my hammock. Thankee for buying a shirt. Appreciate that support. Love that you got a 70s lamp. I think it is an age thing!!!

I started filming and putting my adventures on KZbin for myself. It started out as campsite recon missions and I’d upload them so I could go back to remember the logistics of a certain campsite. Then I started filming my trips to share with my mother and my friends. But I found myself going back and watching them to relive the moment. One in particular that I watch all the time absolutely sucked when it happened. It rained and rained and rained. We got soaked to the bone hiking out on Sunday morning. I go back and watch that now and think, “Damn, that was a fun trip !!” I can’t imagine being you because even in my tiny world of KZbin and Facebook, I’ve been a hundred miles from home and had people recognize me or my hideous voice. “Are you David? The photographer?” On one hand it’s complimentary. On the other hand it can be a little scary or unnerving. Oh well , I’ve rambled enough. All secure in MY Sector 7. Woooooooo buddy !!!! See ya later, Shug !!

Shug, I appreciate the insight on your journey and where you’re at now. I’ve taken loads of inspiration on hammocking, holiday baking, guitar playing, RC airplanes (not control line) etc from you over many years and it always gives me a lift that you are kind enough to reply to my occasional comments. I realize that I, too, am a spirited introvert. I’m a classical tenor and there is nothing like that buzz of performing for hundreds of people. Yet I feel weird singing happy birthday at a family party!

You and the good people at Hammock Forums are my hammock Heros. I’ve had the pleasant opportunity to meet and talk with Dutch at AT trail days and runs some ideas by him since I was carrying a hammock and sleep system I made myself. That same day I also had the pleasure of meeting and talking a bit with Adam and his wife from Hammock Gear. All of the gear I’ve made was based on things I learned from you guys on the Mt. Rushmore of hammocking, and I wouldn’t be nearly as much of a happy hanger without you all. I think the first videos on hammocks I watched were yours about 12-14 years ago and have always enjoyed your clowning around or juggling. May the Hike be with You Shug! and thanks for all the help along the way.

i have always enjoyed your sense of humor and personality. some people just have a natural charisma. and i am sure it takes a lot of work to bring that energy whenever you film your videos, but there are some things that not everyone can just do spontaneously. your personality has always come across as genuine and spontaneously fun. it's infectious. i'll always come back and watch your videos, even if they aren't about camping, or hammocks.. i also enjoy music and am always interested in odd hobbies or even just a vlog of someone's day. so yeah, at least for me, there are certain people on youtube, who i always come back to because i just feel a kinship to them, i see something of myself that i relate to in them as a person, i like them as a person and want to keep in touch in some way. so sometimes it's about that person, rather than the topic / content they might produce. even if they didn't have the greatest production quality etc, i'll keep following them because i care. some people just grow on you like that. but of course, your videos are great, well done, entertaining, funny, and informative, and i still enjoy my hammock! i think i'll always enjoy relaxing in a hammock, who wouldn't?! keep on keepin on shug.. long life and good health to ya, whooo buddy!

IT TALKS... IT TALKS!!!!!!!!!! Shug! So good to have you feelin' better!!! To heck with everything else!!! And I'll admit, I watch you for selfish reasons. First, we're not far off in age, both "late boomers", but the selfish reasons... I've had health reasons that keep me homebound, I still work for a livin', gotta have the insurance. You're attitude is probably one of the biggest reasons I subscribed and make it a point to watch. Your insights, your expxlanations on various things, I could pluck a chicken but not a bass (oh how I wish I could play a mandolin). When I get back on my feet I want to do some "hammocking" to whatever degree. I've learned so much of that from you. I have to remind myself, you're a KZbinr I don't know the "real side" but I believe it can't help but peep through quite a lot. You do what Shug needs to do, most of us want hassle you and are in for the ride and duration. AND YES THE VEST IS WAY COOL. If they through me in the looney bin for living in the past. I'm demanding Hot Wheels, Tonkas, the Shwin bike that had the big raciing slick on the back and tiny wheel on the front. They'll have to provide a Marantz or Pioneer LP turn table with cassette play... had my share of 8-tracks and making them work with match books, I don't want them. I could keep goin' but I'll digress. ROCK ON SHUG MAN!

I am stress testing my voice. Trying to still be a bit mute every day for a spell. I think you can see into my real side. I am a bit more unsavory by a campfire but on video or live shows I don't want to swear or make folks uncomfortable. I had a Schwinn Orange Crate, still have my hot wheels and JonnyLighning 500. Major Matt Mason. 8 tracks. Clackers. Parts. Super Helmet 7, Super Balls.Such a great time to be a kid. I think back and I was lucky to have a super-looper childhood with good parents. I do dwell back. Haaa...the matchbooks to shim the 8 tracks and that click and change right it the middle of a big guitar solo.

Hey Shug, remember all those hammockers 10-15 years ago, man I watched many hammock videos. Where are they now? I haven't been hammocking for almost 10 years now, except for one or two overnighters in a local forest. Now I take my wife on camping trips to Sweden and Norway, just bought a new tent that I am looking forward to try out. It's big enough to be able to stand up in, and roomy enough to accommodate two camping cots, since my wife, who is half side paralyzed after a stroke 30 odd years ago, can't sleep on the ground. She enjoys it, and I enjoy sharing that with her. I do hope that you and Hickory find the time to get out again together. Cheers my friend.

Hey Shug! I'm sneaking up on my 70th birthday this year, and watching this and your comment about being 65 made me think of something my Grandfather said to me one day. He was slogging it out with a pitchfork at the tender age of 87 in his garden and I walked into his yard…he walked out of the weeds up to me and with a straight face said “ to be a young man of 65 again”..and he meant it! So in his books you would still be a young man…it’s all about one's perspective and attitude and I’d say you definitely have the right attitude. Cheers from Nova Scotia..MikeR.

Of course it's true, as you say, that you edit and show us what you want us to see, and you are a whole person, with aspects some folks might not warm to--just like everybody else--but you always come across as a guy who has class, and I don't believe that could be faked so consistently for so long. Love the music (mandolin, bass, or whatever you pick up), and I hope you and Hickery get to take a trip among the maple trees very soon.
