Well Shug, after watching and enjoying your videos for years, I’ve always wanted a Warbonnet hammock, and I finally just took the plunge on a new XLC and all the trimmings. I haven’t decided on the under quilt yet but I’ll get one before it gets to “cold” which is not a word we worry about too much here in Southeast Texas. Hey Shug, you know what I like most about your videos? They're not put together as the manufacturers would make them. Let me explain: When you have designed, created & produced an item like the XLC, it can become easy to write it from the makers viewpoint & not from the users. When that happens, the KISS method goes right out the window because there can sometimes be a "well surely you can see that?" feeling in the videos. It's not deliberate at all but it can go to explanations being less clear. When you produce your videos from the hanger's perspective, asking questions & showing solutions that hangers of ALL levels of experience might ask, then it really adds a wealth of knowledge that some of us mere mortals, who might not be able to get out there as often, really benefit from. That's the mark of a man who knows how to champion the subject & is what makes your videos (this one is a great example of that), so easy to watch & so valuable too. Thanks for being our eyes & ears & let me just say; "All Clear in Sector 8 too!". Cheers. :)))

Second time viewer you’re a great instructional video on the Warbonnet hammock. That was my number one reason for buying War Ham in the first place. I believe it was Brandon that did original video on their website. Thank you for the time you’ve taken on video. I’m the master of every excuse in the world for using my hammock but I haven’t found the real cold inviting until watching your videos. You have given me an idea I didn’t buy the ExL for self gratification now my wife will be my under quill 😂 I haven’t spent the money on under quilt I’m using my 0 bag with pad seems to work well only have been down to 20deg but it was a windy one 😂. This is a FANTASTIC, detailed, and thorough review Shug. Warbonnet owes you a free hammock. I stumbled into your channel while researching alchy stoves. After subscribing and watching a lot of your vids, I went from having NO interest in hammock camping, to researching what hammock I want to try. All by myself I gravitated to the Warbonnet XLC............which brought me to this video. I need to save up some funds, but I think the heavy double layer XLC is going to be my hammock. Oh yeah, and I've already ordered a book and joined Hammock Forums. I think I've slipped too far down the rabbit hole to climb back out now.

Shug, I am extremely grateful for your willingness to share your extensive hammocking knowledge with me! Your videos (for me) flatten the learning curve for us noobs so we can level up to novice lollygaggers much quicker without an uber expensive trial and error process. I know and appreciate the amount of work that goes into producing videos as my wife and I run an RV travel channel here on the tube. A salute to you sir, to the The Lord of Lollygag! 👑 - Dennis After watching and rewatching your WB XLC videos I have 2 questions I hope you will answer for me. 1) How much does the lay change when you completely remove the top covers and lose the footbox section of fabric? Because the "chinook" setup makes sense in my mind. But not if it compromises space for diagonal lay. 2) Can you shine a little more light on why you prefer to fly with a dutch biner between your continuous loops and suspension instead of a whoopy hook or WB Fish hook? Thank you!
@shugemery3 жыл бұрын
If you take off the bugnet then you just end up with a regular gathered end hammock. Warbonnet calls theirs the Traveller. I like the bugnet as a backrest when sitting sideways in the hammock. The dutch biner was something I already had nut the Fishhook works well. They act as a water break for rain coming down suspension....kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGKyiYGZlK94hsU
@edsiefker13015 жыл бұрын
I ruined my old XLC by sitting on the bug net. I got a new XLC, and the benefits of being able to unzip both sides independently are so nice, I'm not even upset. Enter/exit both sides. Access to your stuff on the ground from both sides. Unzip both sides entirely, and tie up the net when it's breezy. Absolutely recommended.

I've spent the last couple years learning to hammock in a basic ENO. I finally made a serious commitment with the purchase of an WB Eldorado double layer and Superfly. This combo could be lighter for backpacking, but I'll never wish I'd gone bigger or beefier............and the double layer will let me cheat with a foam pad for a while until I buy a UQ. It's night and day better than my ENO, and I'm already planning to buy a single layer Traveler XL for hot weather layin' around. I'm a head right sleeper, so I had to revisit your videos to see how to flip my netting (a two minute job at most), and then how to enter. On my own I've preferred entering opposite from the pulled out head area, but now I'm going to try your technique. I also need to buy some shock cord and other "fiddly bits." Thanks once again for your excellent instruction Shug. BTW in re-watching this, I just noticed you put studs on your Crocks! Well...when time the 10' Blackbird would suit you better....www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/blackbird/ The BB vs XLC…The BB vs XLC…These are basically the same model, with the XLC being longer and having a removable top and more accessories. The BB is good for someone up to 6′, and the XLC up to 6’6″, however folks 5’10” and above will normally have noticeably more comfort in the longer XLC, so if max comfort is a major consideration, folks 5’10-11″ should go with the longer XLC if looking for max comfort or the BB if looking for max weight savings.

Looks to be a great hammock shug. This might be helpful, I tie a para cord trolley line between both bug net zips so that when you get into your hammock, you can just grab you zipper trolley line ( which you tie to both zippers whilst zippers are at their furthest points apart at each end of hammock, ) and then gently pull on your trolley line to close zip. It’s just another option. Great vid as always, thanks shug.

I’m schtill rockin’ the Gen1 XLC + winter top cover I bought together a year ago, along with the lighter Wooki. Now I wish I’d waited because I like the dual-sided exit/entry option, but have reservations about the vents in the new winter top cover that remain permanently open and can’t be closed off. I really do wish my Gen1 XLC zipper was at least a 2-way on the entry/exit side so I could keep the pulls at a closer reach, rather than only way above my head.

Great review, thanks! I am especially glad to see the zipper at the head end go all the way to the top. In order to have breakfast in the hammock I have often switched head end for foot end so my head could be closer to the top of the hammock. Someone else already commented on tying a cord to the zippers to close them more easily. I tied a cord to the zipper in my original XLC so when it’s down by my feet I can just pull the cord. I don’t use the soft para cord but a thin cord that is quite stiff. It lies along the bottom of the hammock better. Thanks again. Care to comment on the pad you have in there?

I'd about always have a Wooki or some sort of under insulation. Underquilt protector alone does not do a lot to keep one warm. To me it keeps the wind from robbing UQ warmth. Being middle aged, having an 8 hour drive both ways, and sleeping on the bare ground really took its toll on me this trip, lol. I have a CCS tarp (made in Minnesota), would that work as a tarp with this setup, or would it be wiser to invest in a dedicated hammock tarp?

How would the under quilt protector do for storage of shoes, socks, pants and such.
@shugemery Жыл бұрын
It may pull it down too much and it could lose some of it's protection. But I've never used mine that way so just speculating. Better to use other storage...kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4G0oJypj7yFiLs

Have the older XLC & debating on getting a Wookie. (Keep an eye out for one for sale.) My feet hit the net, compressing the sleep bag footbox a bit, but I find myself mostly in travel mode. That top cover really boosts the inside temp. I thought mine might have windows, but no.

I wish the Wooki was a wee bit longer in the foot area. You need to get your lay just right.

Ive made several of these hammocks (made a template set out of Tyvek). I use a piece of dyneema connected to both zippers, and can easily open or close, even using my foot if needed. Ive never made an xlc blackbird with the new Vision zipper though..

Any of these plans made for the public? I'm looking to make another hammock.
@Hangs4Fun6 жыл бұрын
Travis P yes, someone posted detailed "Cad" type drawings on hammockforums. Took me awhile to transfer details to Tyvek and make my templates and then laying these templates out and cutting take some time. This is not a beginning our intermediate sewing project (hm,hmmm, i mean thread injecting project). I think someone ended up selling templates for awhile? You will earn this by the time you are done making it and appreciate a product like this being already made.

Shug, just discovered your KZbin channel as I've looking to make the transition to hammocks from tents for backpacking and bikepacking. Lots of options, but I've been coming down to the updated lighweight double XLC or a Dutchware Chameleon Wide (I'm 54 yo, 6'2, 235#). Seems many think the Chameleon offers a better sleep than the XLC and looks like you could get most of the same options with either. I'm a poor sleeping in general, so trying to give myself the best sleep option more than anything else. Live in the NW, so lots of rain, lots of trees, misty mornings etc. Any extra input or your preference for my first hammock to buy? Learning lots from all your videos and you're also extremely entertaining. Thanks for all the efforts and work Tim

Off topic, but do you try to hang crossways to the wind, or inline with the wind? Or do you just find two trees you like, and not worry about the wind? 😄
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
Well in theory but it all depends on trees. Sometimes in a lee to avoid the wind entirely.

Shug, with the underquilt protector to the top cover , do you loose your foot box? What do you do let the underquilt loose by attaching the two end strings or zip it up to the top cover?
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
Yes you do lose the footbox in that configuration. I am not a top cover user but was just showing the options so I don't worry about it. The underquilt just hangs the normal way. The underquilt-protector ties and zips.

Why did you get a 'reverse lay' underquilt? Do you prefer to sleep on your right side and look out the window? I am trying to decide which way to go, as I tend to toss and turn on my own bed. Should I try and find my preferred lay? Is there a health benefit to one side or the other?
@shugemery2 жыл бұрын
I always ended up head right/ feet left. You can take the bugnet off this hammock and it is just a regular hammock. Bugnet reversible once you find your preferred lay.
@jlhgrace82842 жыл бұрын
@@shugemery Yes, without an under quilt one can set it up EITHER way by reversing the bugnet. BUT When I go to order the Under quilt I HAVE to decide which way to lay since the Wookie is made to work only one way. Any suggestions
@shugemery2 жыл бұрын
@@jlhgrace8284 You could use a different UQ than the Cookie or wait until you figure out your lay. Any UQ will work set up properly.

Shug, did you buy extra accessories from warbonnet to stake out the shelf and bug net? I noticed you have four mitten hooks connected to the hammock. You also have Rings, carabiners, white shock cord and a cord lock. Did your hammock come with four mitten hooks? Thanks!

You can see what is included here...www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/blackbird-xlc/ Also suspension choice. The carabiner and rings were one though.

Hey Shug, how would you recommend staking out the shelf and bug net with a tarp? Specifically the Super-fly from WB. In this video you used a trekking pole to get a horizontal pull on the net. I ordered the SF tarp over the weekend and have been wondering what the best methods would be when it arrives later this week.
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
Just straight down to the ground at an angle. The stake usually ends up outside the tarp. I don't always use a pole to hold it up...that was just to make it easier to film. Not literal.
@ryancaudle50756 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick response and confirming my thoughts. I use poles on my XLC w/o a tarp because it opens up the netting better. Too bad they don't have a pole MOD for that like they do for the tarp. I think I will have to look into that option. If I come up with something, I'll send you photos.

Pause: I get a slightly better lay out of the XLC than my Superior 10 footer. I think it is more that footbox thing than the 11 vs 10 feet. Hec the 10 foot Superior is really lime 10.5 feet anyway. Did you arrive the same: the XLC has a slightly better lay, but the Superior is superior in real cold weather?

I find the SG a real good lay. Never any calf ridge.

Would a sol emergency bivy inside a hammock work as good as an under quilt in terms of warmth, or do you think it would produce too much condensation. So much cheaper than an underquilt and lighter for bike packing.
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
In my opinion too much condensation. I think a camping pad would be better but UQs are the best.
