@@jayskicksnfits9372I'm doing good bro how about you?👊 I applaud him for saying that but you never know what the future might hold. Damian Lillard said he was never gonna leave the Blazers, and Jabari Parker said he was never gonna leave the Milwaukee Bucks, he ended up leaving before the Bucks won their championship and missed out on a NBA Championship Ring, he went to the Bulls, Celtics, and now the couch not even in the NBA anymore. I applaud Joel Embiid for saying that but you never know what the future might hold. 5 years from now he might still be on the 76ers or he might be somewhere else you never know.

With my friends, whenever we had a birthday, the only person everyone was paying for was the birthday boy/girl with everyone else paying their own way. Of course, we also were cognizant of going to a place everyone could afford to eat too. Too many folks want to floss like big ballers when they don't have shot caller money.

My rule for birthday dinners: Everybody pays their own tab and somebody picks up the tab for the birthday person. The person(s) picking up the tab for the birthday person needs to establish that in the beginning so folks ain’t looking crazy when the tab comes. For the birthday person, you need to come with enough money to cover your tab just in case no one in your party is able. Quit eating at these folks’ restaurants when you can’t afford to pay. I don’t know why we complicate things when the check comes. If you can’t afford to pay for your own meal, you need to stay home.

@@jpatt85 Perhaps, as we grew older we would have our separate checks. When we were younger we would have one check and have to do math computation. I thought splitting the check meant dividing the check by the number of persons at the table. I did that once when the social worker, clinical manager, and I went to lunch. The social worker suggested splitting the check 3 ways. It was the first time I encountered paying in that fashion.

@@sharonsmalls6846 I've never done the split the check equally thing. Honestly, I fully expect to pay my own check, plus tip, every time I dine out. I have even put a little bit extra $20-40 to help pay for the birthday persons meal as well. Or just pay for their entire meal + tip if it's a close friend. I have NEVER split the bill into equal parts. Doesn't seem fair if one person barely ordered anything but another ordered drinks, appetizers, steak lobster etc

@@jpatt85 I have never been in a scenario where one person ordered a great deal, and the other person did not. I can only remember that one instance when we left work and went out to lunch. Frankly, I don't remember why we decided to go out. It wasn't a business lunch. There were nominal differences between our meals. With my friends, we only celebrated birthdays as an occasion to meet. We were so busy we weren't meeting. So we used our birthdays as a reason to meet 4 times a year. I have often picked up the tab for family members, especially if I invited them. For example, we spent a few hours at the zoo, and I would suggest a restaurant when we were leaving. There was no expectation for them to pay anything. Coming from a poverty-stricken background I wanted my family to share in my 'new' experiences. My first restaurant experiences were with friends I met a college. My upscale restaurant's experience was with one friend, and we were both poverty-stricken. Afterward, it was work dinners, I had to learn how to use all the silverware. Lol! Now, my daughter takes me out and pays for the meal and tip (I taught her to tip well). I also taught my granddaughter how to use all the silverware so that she will never have to wait and watch for someone else to use the right utensils. I am grateful for the many experiences I have had in my life.

@@jpatt85splitting the check only works if you all had similar items and not much of a price difference, and if the group is relatively a low number. Only other scenario where I think it works is if you are a group that eat out together fairly regularly. Anything else can create an uneven/unfair situation.

First things first, Birthday Dinners are for close friends only. And whoever Birthday it is , is not paying. We split it, only if you didn’t drink I don’t expect you to pay for anyone’s Drinks. That’s how we do it. But you definitely don’t wait till the end to figure anything out.

Fact! My crew is tight. Even though we aren’t ‘rich’, we all make good salaries. The spots that we hit around ATL aren’t super expensive. So splitting a $300-$500 tab amongst 5-6 people ain’t a big deal when the gathering is fun-filled. Plus we are all married, and most of us have at least 1 child. So these periodic gatherings are really kind of priceless considering how busy our lives are.

It depends on what your standards are and what is understood as friends. For me, I always pay if my friend has a birthday, big celebration etc... even if the rest don't want to (the same goes for my friends they will pay for me). If I am short on money, I don't go.

I’m with you. I’ve done both. Back when money was tight, I didn’t like it. But when I started making more, It wasn’t an issue because it was discussed prior to going and it was a major celebration. But again, my crew has been tight for at least 12 years. Now, on the flip side, whenever we go out and the waitress can only do one tab, we all keep track of what we ordered and cash app whomever volunteers to pay the tab while we are at the table. No issues ever.

if you ain't got the money, don't go. if it's your birthday and your single, bring money just incase your friends ain't like that, if it's your bday and you with your partner, your partner should cover the birthday person. but if all fails, everyone pay for what they ordered. it's simple

I have always had mixed emotions about grown people's b-day dinners. In the household I grew up in....you host, you pay unless you express otherwise. Now if someone offers to take you out for your birthday, you pay since you provided. But it is always amazing to witness how little someone orders when they think they are to pay and how much they will order when they believe you will pay...It's amazing.

This imagery highlights the "friendship dilemma" which takes into account boundaries, respect, expectations and assumptions. Expectations: You have to be clear about what you expect from your friends and what they can expect from you. Respect/Assumptions: Whenever me and my friends go out we always discuss cost because we respect each other's space and don't want to assume what each other can afford. If somebody can't afford it then we talk about who will cover that person(s) or choose a more affordable setting so we all come prepared, have fun and pay the check happily. Boundaries: Once when my friends wanted to go to a fancy restaurant I let them know I couldn't afford it and would have to excuse myself from the gathering however having established my boundaries they decided they would cover me and so we went with the proper expectation.
