No, he wouldn't have been meeting God face to face. He probably would've been meeting demons spirits face to face. The Bible doesn't mention that we'll meet God face to face right after we die. It can happen. I was in the subway in NYC. I was sitting in a corner seat. A man was standing up next to me. I had on a loose fitting jacket. I put five dollars in the pocket. I forgot that I had put it there. The next thing that I knew I felt a hand reach into my jacket. When I realized what had happened. I just started quoting the bible about stealing. Actually I was mad at myself for making such a foolish mistake. But it turned out that the man was listening and to my shock he gave me back the $5.00. Now I know $5.00 isn't much but the fact that I got to him and he listened. Then he had the nerve to ask me if I was single.

That's all he needed was someone to listen and give compassion. It's hard when there's no one who sees you, you're invisible and in order to be noticed , you do things that get others attention and not in a positive way. The woman at the well comes to mind.
