It can happen. I was in the subway in NYC. I was sitting in a corner seat. A man was standing up next to me. I had on a loose fitting jacket. I put five dollars in the pocket. I forgot that I had put it there. The next thing that I knew I felt a hand reach into my jacket. When I realized what had happened. I just started quoting the bible about stealing. Actually I was mad at myself for making such a foolish mistake. But it turned out that the man was listening and to my shock he gave me back the $5.00. Now I know $5.00 isn't much but the fact that I got to him and he listened. Then he had the nerve to ask me if I was single.

The bottom line is that children and youth need a village populated with good people - young and old, male and female - and I also dare to hope for a mix of races, cultures, backgrounds in that village - to give support and mentorship, and help people try to fix mistakes. This man saw worth in the younger one while assessing a real, potential threat, and he chose to risk taking the high road. I'm so grateful things didn't go the other way as they sadly often do. If it had, then the rest of society probably would felt all self-righteous and chimed in and condemned them both for their actions, and both their fates would have been set from then on. Any mistake that both parties can learn from and walk away with new perspective, is a blessing. Thanks for sharing. Bravo to these brothers for daring to think and connect!
