Well, another reason for me to keep using my 3DS as a controller. It's really easy to do. Just shield, hold up, then because Y and B are so close to eachother, pressing them at the same time it's a given thing. Thanks for the video. It's going to be a great adittion to my repertoire. Of course, it's not a Shulk specific technique, but you get my point.

Great video, Jerm. I knew Air Slash was probably Shulk's best OoS option, but had trouble punishing with it because I was dropping shield instead of canceling it with jump, so this definitely cleared up a huge misconception for me, thanks!

I've been air slashing out of shield since 3DS lol, but I don't really go for it that often. In a lot of cases I feel like getting a grab is preferable. I go for the air slash when I want a kill option basically. I never even thought of this as a tech since I'm a tap jumper lol. It's as simple as doing an Up B while shielding for me lol

I've been using a similar control scheme since Brawl's days. L for Jump, R for Special, B for Shield and Y for jump. Even during Melee I was never satisfied at how difficult it is to hit shield when it's on a trigger button, or how jump was on an entirely different side to the rest of the movement controls.

Pro controllers have a jump button right beside the B button, making out-of-shield up specials easier (without tap jump) by pressing both buttons simultaneously with your thumb. I think this is worth mentioning in videos, as some players do use pro controllers.

Yeah, OOS AS is a terrific move. Furthermore, Reversed OOSAS can REALLY take people by surprise. OOS AS is also a great option for covering get up options. It works on most of them: attacking, jumping, rolling, getting up (timing is tough though), letting go and jumping up, and it can even hit people who are dangling on the ledge without invincibility. I have tap jump on though, which makes OOS AS extremely natural since all you have to do is up B like usual.

That's true. It really depends on character. For those it does work against, though, it kills at pretty low percents. I think just doing the first hit is safe on some characters. I've been meaning to test on who it's good at for a while now, but have never gotten to it. Hmm... I wonder if advancing air slash would help hit some of them.

Been using this for a while and even since Brawl. Characters like Marth, Lucina, Mario, Doc, and Meta Knight also really benefit from this. When I saw how good Shulk's Up Special was, I was more than pleased to know I'd be using this as Shulk as well. Very good for stealing kills. As for the Tap Jump thing, you can make that character specific. Shulk doesn't need short hopped up air so you can just leave tap jump on. This way, you can just pretty Up B and do the air slash. Though again, it's all about preference. On the 3DS release version, there is no C-Stick so the general idea is to turn off tap jump. Now that the Wii U version is out and along with the New 3DS, I'm sure more players will have it on. Love your videos and good stuff explaining how this works!

Not sure if this has already been said, but with tap jumping enabled on the 3DS, you can just shield, and then tap X or Y to jump and just slide your thumb down to B while holding up and it works just fine. Fantastic video by the way, I never knew this about Shulk thanks!

Nair to Air Slash is a TRUE COMBO at low percents (in Buster mode the opponent should be at medium damage for it to be a true combo)

Not trying to show off here but this only took a few seconds in training mode to pull off, and I used Y and X to do it! Though I hold the GC controller in a vary unorthodox way. Tip of the thumb on Y, middle knuckle on A and the outer left side of my knuckle is on X. So just a slight and careful rotation of my thumb is all I need. (note, I also press the buttons with those parts of my thumb). Also, just cause I can do it doesn't mean I've mastered it, that's going to take longer.

Good instructional video. I'll try this one out for sure! I still don't have the GC adapter but fortunately the Y and B buttons are right next to each other on the Pro Controller, so this tech is extremely easy to use with that setup without changing anything around. I need to force myself to get into the habit of performing more actions out of shield and just playing smarter in general, and I think this is a good place to start.

I play with a Pro controller. The jump and special buttons are very close to each other, so I don't need to jump cancel with a trigger, I can just press Y to jump then B to Air Slash.

I decided to make my special button my trigger button. Having jump as a trigger is kind of strange for me, considering you have to move your finger more if you use a trigger rather then a button to jump, and since all of the characters I play have to jump A LOT, using a button is much easier. Also, The B button has always been RELATIVELY far away from a, and using y and a, which are right next to each other, is a lot easier in my opinion. L as the special move button works for me, I suggest you try it.

You can use Y and B if you use the Wii U Pro Controller like me (since, you know, Nintendo made like two GameCube adapters). Your thumb easily covers both buttons making it easy to preform this trick that way.

When I played smash4 I had grab on y , jump on L(so I could upair string with metaknight while following their DI easily) and Specials on the c-stick (only with lucas for wavebouncing everywhere) Works wonder

I find it easier for me to leave tap jump on for techs that require it like these, but use button jumping anyway. Up tilting with tap jump on isn't really that difficult. It's the most optimal, even M2K leaves tap jump on despite him jumping with Y.

my control setup uses R to shield and L to grab. that, im not very willing to change as i have adapted muscle memory to that specific setup. i dont think i would be able to perfect shield nearly as much if i switched the shield button. do you think maping jump to the z button would make it easier? (because i never use the z button because i mapped grab to L) or maybe i could map special attacks to the z button. im thinking either would be less akward then trying to do this tech with the x or y buttons. what do you think? aside from replacing what the L and R buttons do, what should i do to make this tech esier to use?

Sorual Yup you can use any setup that is most comfortable to you. Try and set jump to Z and see if you can successfully ASOOS with that control scheme.

Brian Byer It's extremely easy on the 3ds. Either use tap jump or jump with x/y. When in shield just press x/y + B at the same time to air slash out of shield, or hold up on the control stick and press B if you have tap jump enabled.

+Tanman777 It takes time for your character to put away their shield. However, if you jump it nullifies that time taken to put away your shield. From here if you either U-Smash or U-Special the jump that instantly cancelled your shield will be cancelled. Shulk benefits from this because of how fast Air Slash comes out to punish. Biggest benefits for the tech though are Zelda, Bowser, Regualar Samus and Charizard, but Shulk is useful.

Wait, I don;t understand how you can't Shorthop upair with tap jump on. you can still press X and up on the C stick? (either by rotating your thumb really quickly, or using the claw grip) I Personally always play with tap jump on Because in Project M, Snake's UpB OoS is INSANELY good for combo starters, getting C4 stickies, Dair and Fair followups etc (Not that most of you watching this vid would probably know alot about ProjectM) You also could've covered Reverse UpB OoS (if that's possible, Im rather certain it is, but I don't exactly own this game and only get to play Shulk in tournaments) when people like whiff a dash attack and fly past you. But otherwise great job on the content update. P.S. Finished Xenoblade Chronicles yet? I remember hearing you on stream like 12 days ago that you would plan to. And the game only takes 80 hoursish if you 70% rush storyline route. And you really should finish it. All the Shulk lines actually make sense then. Also you know you're using Sharla's Colour right? Indeed, should be very easy on 3DS for button jumpers since they jump button 'Y' is right next to B. Only reason I personally change it on gc controller is because the Y and X button are too far from B to input it properly-that's why I use the R trigger since I don't use that button for anything else otherwise.

You are very correct. I say that this is best used to throw your opponent off while sneaking in some %. Maybe punish a unsafe recovery option if the opponent is not as skilled. I'll have to try it myself, as I came up with these options from observation only.

High risk-high reward. It's your choice if you want to risk your stock by going for ASOOS at high percent with smash on. Definitely less risky to do this while your opponent is at high percent while your are at a really low percent so If you mess up the punish wont be as severe.
