You gotta admire the love Capcom had for this guy. They literally fought for him to appear in MvC3, Marvel doesn't care about this guy at all but Capcom literally just came and said "Bring this Dr. Strange's bad guy to our games, we will make him a star!" No, Marvel does "care about this guy at all," in that Shuma-Gorath is not their character, belonging instead to the rights-holder for Kull the Conquerer and presenting a complex issue of legal rights to the character. @kirbyofthestarsfanАй бұрын
Exactly, reasons like this is why I love crossover titles, where they can throw somebody out of left field and completely cement that character for that crossover series. Like say, Mr. G&W for Melee or Powder Toast Man for NASB, these unusual choices are what makes these picks beautiful❤

Shuma's odd standing as a Marvel character not quite owned by Marvel reminds me of the characters of Capcom's Alien vs Predator game. In the AvP case Capcom does own their OC's but probably can't use em because of the property they debuted in. If Shuma were to return I think having Linn Kurosawa as his Capcom rival would be kind of a neat idea in terms of real world similarities. Disney owns both Alien and Predetor after the Fox merger so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
@evenhartwick4422Ай бұрын
you make a good point about it not only being an obscure character but also one marvel doesn't fully own. if he's technically a Conan character first does that sorta make him like a pseudo guest character? even though i think its silly he's a considered Conan character because just because of his first appearance despite him appearing more in Dr. Strange that would be like if Wolverine was considered a Hulk character just because thats where he first appeared

Honestly I think they didn't add Shuma into the MCU because that meant sharing revenue with the estate that owns his license, and the movies, tie-ins and merch all would apply to the MCU. The estate owners were completely fine with letting Marvel use Shuma's name as well, which makes me believe this. Seeing that Shuma is in the MVC collection with no name change also lends credit to it, MVC will not make as much money, and if we ever get a new MVC we'd still get Shuma over 'Gargantos'.

This might seem like a foreign concept to some of you who grew up in a world where you could google anything, but I remember scouring the early internet trying to figure out who this guy was and he simply wasn't on it yet. When he did hit the internet it was all in reference to these games. Move sets, FAQs, etc. No origin. Eventually, probably by MvC2's release I finally found an update that identified that origin; all it said was that he was a Conan and Dr. Strange character and had a tiny little blurred image of one panel of that first Dr. Strange appearance. I considered that a huge victory too since, like I said, no one knew. I of course immediately fell in love with the freak and he's still one of my favorite fighting game characters of all time. Chaos Dimension alone is just the coolest super move ever created.

@jedisquidward2 ай бұрын
I love this character so much. I even have a T-Shirt with a design of his Chaos Dimension move. I think people like to choose a character that represents them in a way, like the classic saying about Dogs matching their Owners. And in that regard, he's just everything I love. The Octopus is my favorite animal, the Eye as a visual motif is one I'm obsessed with, and characters that morph and change shape are some of my favorites in fighting games. I even drew a character when I was 14 who greatly resembled Shuma Gorath's white color. I always find myself attracted to the less commonly played characters in fighting games; the stranger ones be it in visuals or playstyle. Of course, the character that first got me into Marvel vs Capcom, like many others, was Phoenix Wright; ironic considering the themes of "Law" and "Chaos". Even shooting lasers from his eyes is a trait shared with my favorite character in Smash Bros; ROB. Though I've never read many comics, this character being so obscure calls back to an earlier time in fighting games when people would pick a character just based on them looking cool instead of recognizing them from something else (a trend that Marvel vs Capcom pioneered). Before the days of big announcements and guest characters, just going to the arcade and seeing which character physically looked interesting to you would play a large factor in who you would play. Of course, as a representation of Marvel, he also goes far beyond that, pioneering the idea of the "Wild Card" character and presenting the idea that in company-wide crossovers, painting a full picture of the IPs means obscure properties also deserve to be showcased alongside popular ones.

Shuma was definitely the character I was like who are you when I started with MVC3. But now I appreciate them making such deep cuts.

The only character that really stood up to me the first time I saw MVC was Shuma Gorath! I didn't know what the hell it was but non-anthropomorphic fighters have always been characters I tend to lean towards. I only knew about his sub-link to Lovecraft, one of my favourite authors many many years later

I’ve always loved Shuma, he always stood out to me as a character and I absolutely adore his theme from Super heroes it’s the perfect amount of inter dimensional funk.

Originally, I thought the Konan connection and Doctor Strange 2 thing was an indication we might never see Shuma again, but now I think the best solution to work around it is to do what DS2 did and give Shuma a different name and act he's a different character (although you can do a cheeky comment refrencing that).
