The difference between 说 and 告诉 is that 告诉 can take an indirect object, but 说 cannot. An "indirect object" (usually a person) is the recipient of the object. Compared to English, very few Chinese verbs can take an indirect object. For example, in "I bought you a car", "you" is the indirect object, and "car" is the direct object. A word-for-word translation would be: 我买你一辆车 but this is incorrect in Chinese. The correct version is: 我给你买一辆车 (word-for-word: "I for you bought a car")

他的话让我开心 = "His words made me happy" In this sentence, 让 can be interpreted either as "allowed" or as "forced". Both interpretations work here. But, because 让 can have these opposing meanings, it can be unclear. (It can also mean "asked".) Recently I heard: 我让妈妈照顾我的狗 Does this mean "I let my mom take care of my dog" or "I asked my mom take care of my dog" ??? For "let" I would use 允许. For "asked" I don't think that 请 or 要求 or 拜托 work very well. Recently, I've heard 找 used in this type of context, and I think it works very well: 我找妈妈照顾我的狗 = "I asked my mom to take care of my dog"

1 - 實現 means "to realize" as in "to make real", e.g. "realize one's ambition/dream" not as in "to learn about" e.g. "I realized that my cat is missing". I think it should be 認識到 or 發覺. 3 - "ask" means "request to" here, so we can't use 問 5 - 要是 is only used for conditionals, but in this sentence the "if" means "whether or not", so the verb-not-verb (是不是) construction should be used.

I have a question about 让 when it's implying "ask". Is it also used if it is without a result? If the friend asked you to do something and then you did/do it, in my opinion it is pretty much the same as "made you do it", while if they only asked you to to do, but you refused, it is different. Same with the teacher, there are 2 situations: The teacher picked you to answer a question (asked you to answer), but you could or could not answer; The teacher let you answer their question when you wanted to answer it.

The word "word" is 词, but as far as I can tell, it only refers to the concept of a word as it appears in dictionaries and is not used metaphorically like in English. LOL! Here's a much better way to explain this. In English, the word "ask" carries two sets of meanings when translated into Chinese. "Ask" can mean "to pose a question". "Ask" can also mean "to make a request". The problem posed in this video has less to do with the English speaker's poor understanding of the Chinese words; it has more to do with the Chinese speaker's poor understanding of the English word "ask". You need to approach this subject from the English speaker's point of view, as opposed to Ms. Shuo Shuo's approach from the Chinese side. The former is a much less confusing way to explain this subject than the latter. In Chinese, "to pose a question" is 問 (wen4). In Chinese, "to make a request" can be 請 (qin3), which literally means to "invite". It can also be 讓 (rang4), which means to "let" or "allow". Additionally, it can also be 叫 (jiao4), which means to "order" or to "call upon". In English, you can use the same word in all these occasions, "ask". The upside of having a native Chinese speaker teach you Chinese is her fluency in Chinese. The downside is her inadequate understanding of English (i.e. the reason you are struggling with a particular subject). I happened to be fluent in both Mandarin and English.

@@Iisheell 请 can be put in many places of the sentence, especially when you use 请 to replace 让 to sound more polite. The expressed nuance of 请 is different if you use it in different ways (besides, 请 can also be seen as the short of 邀请). So I would suggest using 请问 as a universal phrase, it can "soften" the sentence a lot; putting it at the very beginning of the sentence, saying your request after that, and using "吗/呢?" at the end, which makes the request not be like a command. You can also add some phrases such as 不好意思,我想..., 可不可以... to make it even more polite; or replace 请 by 拜托 if you use 请问... sentence (because too many 请 in a sentence sounds a little weird ). Back to your first question, I would say in this way: (不好意思,请问...)我想请(拜托)你(/您)帮个忙。/(,可以吗?) The most common expression is 我想请你帮个忙, all these phrases in brackets can be added to fit different levels of politeness; if you add them all, it will be a super polite sentence 😂.
