Cherkassky was the complete pianist in every respect. As a music student I attended some of his London recitals during the 1960s, firstly I was enchanted by the beautiful sonorities he was capable of producing, not to mention the power and brilliance of his technique. Also the range and audacity of his programming was fascinating and indeed entertaining at times (Boogie woogie etude, Morton Gould). Cherkassky represented a golden age of piano virtuosity, ie imagination, daring, and communicative magic, also in the case of this diminutive giant - unpredictability. Nowadays through various high profile competitions many young pianists are like highly trained athletes, physically and technically invulnerable, but offering very little of compelling magic and personality as exemplified by the much missed Shura Cherkassky.

One of the greatest pianists and artists of the 20th century. Loved his playing since I was a teenager and after hearing a BBC radio broadcast of his recording of Tchaikovsky's once neglected Concerto No.2 in G major. After I moved to London, I attended many of his London recitals and concerts and was fortunate to get to know him personally. He did allow me to sit in on one of his four hour practise sessions. I was surprised that he even played the opening chords of the Tchaikovsky first concerto very slowly weighting and balancing every note of each chord. Very slow and methodical in practise but free and spontaneous in 'live' performance. A unique artist.

I heard him many times in recital and still hear his tone in my head: the magic of a trifle like Melody in F by Rubinstein or Tango by Albeniz. His singing tone, the matchless legato, and the way he could play such complicated polyphonic scores like Schulz Evler "Die schoene blaue Donau" or the paraphrase after Evgeni Onegin by Pabst. I don't think anyone can play like him these days, he truly was a unique artist!

Not to forget Joseph Hoffman's Kaleidoscope! Don't know any other pianist who played this very difficult piece.

Thanks! I like your channel and your playing. I heard Cherkassky 5 or 6 times in recital and concerto performances, for which I'm grateful. He was a fascinating musician.
