I actually own this mic and it's been great! I tried many mics at my local shop American Music in Seattle. This mic really sounded the best for my voice! I'm just a 65 YO guy who started writing songs. Then I started recording some of them on Garageband. Then pre-pandemic I took this mic to open mic nights at Stone Way Cafe, and had a blast with it. It sounds great in all settings! Give it a try! cb

Bandrew, I LOVED your acoustic guitar sound herein. It's one of the best I've heard on your reviews and I wish that you did some classical guitar work or some finger-style with it just to hear more of that tone. About ten years ago I played a festival gig in New Zealand as a solo flutist. The sound guys and I got along really well and they spent a fair bit of time with me to get a decent sound. We tried half a dozen mics including all the usual suspects and settled on this Beta 57. After the performance I had numerous compliments on my tone (music to MY ears) and the sound guys seemed very pleased with themselves. My day-to-day performance mic is a Shure Beta 98 attached to the flute near the embouchure plate but according to my wife (the expert), this Beta 57 was a very good alternative and allowed me to talk to the audience between songs. Highly recommended and I see that a sax player in another comment also endorses it. Thank you Bandrew. Performing musicians like myself really appreciate your good work.

Thank you so much Donald. I love hearing stories and experiences from different instrumentalists. It provides a context that I am unable to provide and it teaches me a lot. I am unfortunately terrrrrible at finger picking style, and haven’t spent the time to start to develop those chops. Maybe I’ll work on getting some skills on that department. Thanks again for the great info.

Interesting that you said it wasn’t a vocal mic. Your voice and harmony sounded really present. Yes, would need a pop filter (like all vocal mics) but sounded up front, smooth and clear on vocals. Agree about the acoustic guitar sound too.

Thank you very much for doing an excellent, easy to understand, practical review of the Shure Beta 57a (supercardioid version of the classic SM57Microphone which is apparently the most used microphone in the industry). Because of your review I now know whether or not this microphone is suitable for my particular needs. I wish every reviewer did as good a job as you have done. I look forward to more of you work. I can't understand why the Beta 57 isn't the go to mic over the SM58 actually. I worked/practiced a while at the best/premium sound engineering firm is stockholm/sweden they always used the beta 57 for live performances. I didn't see a SM58 once anywhere in their storage warehouse. You really should do a shoot-out against the SM7b. But please use a premium preamp for the SM7b. About the SM58... I fucking hate it. It was the first mic I bought when I was a teenager and I almost stopped singing after I got it. It made me sound sooo nasal I got embarrassed. That was until I got a handy recorder and figured out I didn't sound nasal at all, so I tried out different mics and yes, ONLY in the SM58 I sound like I have a cold and not in any other mic I tried out.

This IS a very good allround mic, so much more sophisticated compared to sm57 and I have nothing against 57. The added sensitivity helps a lot getting decent signal to noise ratio. My first one mysteriously died but i was replaced. 2nd one still going strong.

Last night I did a live gig. The female singer asked if she could use her own Beta 57A rather than out standard SM58s. It was very good on her voice - not strikingly different but no doubt the rejection helped as her voice needed the most gain to match the other two male voices etc. I also agree with your assessment on acoustic guitar. As good a dynamic mic for this application as I've heard.

Great review of a favorite mic. I have an older Beta-57, with the flat face, that I have used with a variety of instruments over the years, both live and recording. I recall playing in a trad Irish band several years ago at a festival, I think we were the 4th or 5th band to play that particular day. All were acoustic bands, and all the previous guitar players were plugged in. The Fishman Matrix in my Taylor 410 has always sounded like rubber bands to me and I hate it, so I plopped my old Beta 57 on a stand. I promise you-- from just a few notes and chords played during a quick sound check-- people looked up and a couple pointed at me. They were so used to hearing piezo pickups that a dreadnought into the Beta 57 was an overwhelming difference. I didn't do anything special, just really run-of-the-mill DADGAD guitar, but several people came up to me after the set and commented on how great the guitar sounded. Your acoustic guitar test here is really nice. I'll have to learn this pizza song.

Hi Podcastage! I love your videos/reviews and I've watched a ton lately. I know this is an old video so you may not see this, but for someone with the budget to get either one and the plan to get an audio interface anyway, would you suggest the Shure Beta 57a over the Samson Q2U? I love how the Beta 57a sounds, but I've noticed your high praise for the Samson Q2U in a few places and it sounds great too so it got me curious. I know the B57a isn't really entry-level when compared to the Q2U but I'm wondering if the Q2U is that good.

It’s a very different sound to the SM57. I have one in my kit but can never find anyone who wants to use it, which I think is an appearance issue. (Actually mine is not an ‘A’.) To me, it sounds worlds better than the SM on virtually everything I’ve tried it on, particularly guitar, where I haven’t used an SM for at least 30 years. At this rate, someday I will have the most minty, vintage Beta57 in the world, and I’ll sell it on eBay to some deranged collector for, like, $90. Btw, that was such a touching performance. I hope everyone survives it.

I haven't mic-ed a J45 before, but the BETA57 seems a bit more natural in comparison to the 57. It doesn't have the same peaks so I'd probably lean towards that if those were my two options.
