Am I the only one hearing that gate on his voice being choppy?

Yea the settings I had in conjunction with the mic itself being difficult to position was a problem. A new mic and a little teak to settings and it’s much better in all subsequent vids…

You might struggle with this microphone, because it does actually work like a microphone with the cardioid pickup pattern should. The dynamic capsule design indeed does make things difficult to use, But i think the biggest Problem you faced with the SH55 II, was the fact, that you are way closer to the capsule on the SH55 II , than you would be to the SM7B, maybe without knowing. The SM7B has a basket on the front that forces you to keep roughly 5 cm / 2 inches of distance to the capsule. If you make sure, that you keep roughly 2 inches. More distance to the SH55, than what you would keep to the SM7B, then the SH55 would behave the same as the SM7B does. And listening to your sound in this video, i noticed, that parts of your issues are due to too harsh settings on the noise / expander gate. I can hear your gate close way too hard on your voice. And your sibilant issues are due to the fact that the SH55 II has a rather clear tone to it, while the SM7B sounds very dampened, which makes working around sibilant issues much easier. Other people however might find the SM7B to sound too dampened, getting a much better fit to their voice with a microphone like this. Another thing i noticed: you have the microphone top down - and i noticed on other reviews, that the SH55 II sounds bassy if spoken to from below and rather clear and a bit twangy, if your voice hits the SH55 II from the top. So with your microphone tilted towards you and top down, naturally, your voice would be even more Twangy than what you might be used to. Too bad, you had so many issues with this microphone. Judging from other reviews, I think, it‘s actually decent.

Thanks for the insight and taking the time to put down further info! Also thanks for watching. It just ended up not being a good mic for me, but I say in the vid it could be good for other people. I haven’t had the same issues since getting the SM7B.

I could easily sell it or hold on to it (might use it for green screen scenes). It’s a HyperX Quadcast. If your mate wants it, give us a shout girth machine!
