As I understand it, the Super55 comes in blue or red foam, and chrome or black case. The Super55 has the Beta 58 capsule. It's a great microphone for singing into on stage. The one with the black foam is the SH55 mk2 , which is an inferior mic. It also has a switch.

Mike, your attention to detail as a reviewer is astounding. Even your choice of diction seems to change when showcasing the "plosives" or the Esses. You have helped me decide on several microphones, and I thank you.
@raymondjones43903 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your great video! For me the difference is when you get closer to the mics. Seems the Fin gets very "boxy" and "plastic-y" and a little boomy when you get close to it, whereas the Shure gets louder and a little more low end but still sounds nice and clear. And to my ears the Shure sounds overall better. One thing you didn't go in to is durability and longevity. Shure's typically are built like tanks and last forever even with abuse. Other reviews talk about using the Super 55 on the road and they hold up well. The "Fin" I can't find anything on durability but I would go with Shure. The Fin looks great and the LED light is the bomb, but for sound, longevity and reputation I am going with the Super 55 (buying 5 of them). I guess it also boils down to application. If you have a fixed installation and want to look cool, the Fin is in. For durability, multiple locations and sound quality I would go with Shure.

I have the Shure super 55, just got it and it's great!! I use it with the scarlett 2i2 and instead of cranking up the gain, I just naturalize the sound in post and there is no underlying hiss when I do that and even with my TV on, you cannot hear anything. It's absolutely worth every penny in my opinion. Thank you for your awesome review!

@@JotaKienen your comment is 4 years old already and I hope you fixed already, just in case; I own a SM7B and an Audient ID4 Mk2. At first there was an issue with the proximity, if I was a little far from the mic around 12" it stopped picking my voice and discord might cut-off my voice. I got a Fethead Triton to boost the gain. As a weird recommendation, have the Fethead away from any electric connection, because it gets the electromagnetic distortion and might give you some background noise

You failed to mention that "the Fin" is a reproduction (outer shell) of the Turner 34x and 34d microphones of days gone by with a Heil PR20 cartridge, the Super55 is a reproduction of the Shure 55s, also still available as a Shure 55sh type ii, with the Super55 utilizing a Beta58a cart and the 55sh now upgraded to an SM58 cart (now). Shure does have a commitment to rehashing their old, mid-peaky response in their products, even in the Beta products. Although I haven't had the luxury to use a Fin, I love the look. Absolutely retro of the late 50's - early 60's just as a 1959 Eldorado or a 1962 Imperial Crown convertible. I could always find a space for it on my soundstages.
@Mr.MinerAL6 жыл бұрын
34X actually; the 33X/Ds had vertical grille fins. As long as I'm being pedantic... the mic on the Elvis stamp is also a Turner (101) mic, not the Shure 55S. The first, larger, Shure model 55 Unidyne (the Fat Boy) was from 1939, and the smaller, more angular, form-factor that the Super 55 maintains was introduced in 1951! The 34X was introduced in 1947. So both The Fin's and the Super 55's designs have been around for more than 65 years!

@jalind15 ай бұрын
The Heil Fin is an external near clone of the Turner model 34 microphone from about 1947. The Turner 34 was made for use with tape recorders and paging/PA systems. Although the appearance is not as ubiquitous as the Shure Unidyne and Shure 55S, it is just as authentic from history. Another vintage mic is the CAD A77 which has an identical exterior to the Astatic 77 mic. CAD is the successor company to Astatic, so it's no surprise that when they did a retro reissue, they did it with their Astatic 77 from the early 1950s. I have them all and have used them for a good mic where I'm looking for.a distinct retro appearance. It's interesting to note that early directional mics were side address and not end address. Shure pioneered the end address axial capsule and transducer directional mic in 1957 with their Unidyne III capsule and transducer in their 545 and, later, 565 microphones. Readers will recognize the 545 and 565 as the silver satin finish predecessors to the SM57 and SM58 respectively. They all use and still use the Unidyne III capsule. The only difference between the 545/565 and the SM57/SM58 besides external finish and switches are the 545/565 have a different transformer for output and can switch between low and high impedance with an easy to make internal pin change. They sound quite similar but not identical -- differences are subtle. I find it interesting that, given the 1957 and 1961 introduction dates for the Shure 545 and 565 mics, they are not considered retro. Perhaps, having introduced the axial design which has persisted for over 65 years for almost all live use mics, they just don't look different enough from current design to be considered retro.

I wondered what microphone they were using in the hunger games and whether it was just a prop piece or an actual microphone but the real question is did they actually use the audio from it? Surprising that they went with the shiny silver rather than the matte silver finish black would not have fit. I find the heil to be a little bit basser. I like the shape of the Shure better than the Fin but I like the lights on the Finn.
@JRandallS5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. To my ears the Fin is superior, esp for a crooner type vocal. But I could use both in an oldies band that I mix. The slightly wider cardiod of the Shure would be prefect for the leader, as he tends to get off axis a lot more.
@jalind13 жыл бұрын
The Shure Super 55 (it's super-cardioid) has a narrower sensitivity front lobe than the Heil Fin (it's cardioid). Besides width of frontal sensitivity pattern, here are some things to note about cardioid versus super-cardioid. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Rear and side rejection patterns are different -- the shape and direction of the null (least) sensitivity are different. The null sensitivity of a cardioid is a line extending directly along the rear axis of the microphone. As you move off the rear axis in any direction, sensitivity will start to increase to a maximum as you approach the front axis. The best rejection is directly to the rear, so arrange mic, source, monitor, and noise placements to optimize source pickup along with feedback and noise suppression. The null sensitivity of a super-cardioid is a conical surface extending centered the rear axis of the microphone. The center of the cone, which is the rear axis line, has a small very narrow sensitivity lobe which is less sensitive than then front lobe but measurably more sensitive than the conical null. As you move off the rear axis in any direction, sensitivity will decrease to the cone surface and then increase from that null to a maximum as you approach the front axis. The best rejection is about 30° off the rear axis, so arrange mic, source, monitor, and noise to optimize source pickup along with noise and feedback suppression. Noteably, monitor placement for greatest feedback suppression is directly behind a cardioid mic and about 30° off the rear axis for a super-cardioidic. Noise suppression optimizes the same. Another difference is something called proximity effect. The narrower the frontal sensitivity pattern, the greater the proximity effect (although some very special designs such as Electro-Voice's Variable D designs suppress proximity effect). Proximity effect is a measurable and noticable disproportionate incrrase in low frequency sensitivity as the source gets close to the front of the mic -- typically starting at about a foot from the front of the mic and increasing rapidly as the source gets closer. A few inches or less will be very noticable. For sources with only small low frequency content such as a female vocal, it will not be a big change. For sources with a substantive low frequency content such as male vocal, it can be big change. Male vocals often use proximity to adjust how deep their voice sounds. The choice between a a cardioid versus a super-cardioid may need to include thought about proximity effect, the low frequencies in the source, source distance to the mic, and whetherore or less proximity effect is desired. The extent of proximity effect is also quite dependent on the mic model. Another thing to consider is that as one moves off the front axis, the decrease in sensitivity is not necessarily the same for all frequencies -- this can affect the tonal color of the source picked up as the source moves off axis. Tends to me more pronounced more quickly with narrower frontal pickup patterns, but this also is very mic model dependent.

The Fin does sound like it has a slightly “fatter” bottom end. Both lack definition in the top end. Dynamic capsules have to put out more signal, which I expect they do by moving more mass. That may translate into inherently less-accurate (not necessarily weaker) highs, since highs have less area under their energy curve. Anyone care to weigh in on that hypothesis?

Antoine Inniss Over the course of several of his videos, it seems Mike recommends using a FETHead or CloudLifter on virtually ANY dynamic mic to avoid needing to turn the gain up so high that you introduce noise into your signal. This is probably what some of the other people commenting here are referring to when they talk of "hiss". That isnt a totally fair comparison. For one the blue yeti is a USB mic that costs about $130 and the Shure is a Dynamic mic that uses an XLR interface (adding about $100 to the price if you don't have an interface). As Mike stated the Shure will likely be better for a noisier room given it's sensitivity drop off where as the Yeti will pick up background noise in a noisy room. Based on that make you choice.

I Recently did a talent show kind of thing at my local theater and well for the first time in how many years I wired up their vintage microphone that nobody thought worked until last year. We used it for announcements / MC. It looks great... it sounded thin. Hey for how many decades old it still works and I'm sure it's been going around the sides of the movie theater a bit. Electro-Voice Mercury 911 CRYSTAL. I like the round shape of 55 sort of but at the same time I like the smooth finish of the fin and the LEDs are kind of a nice touch. Shape wise the fin kind of has this weird sheep/fin which kind of puts me off. But I think any dimly lit room the light and the finish would look better. It also sounds to have a slightly better base response without as much proximity effect.

The Super 55 is a neodymium magnet super-cardioid element switchless rendition of the Shure 55SH which is a current Unidyne III element (ALINCO magnet) cardioid with switch edition of their historical Shure 55 Unidyne II in the small version. The Shure Super 55 has a much hotter output compared to the Shure 55SH because of the element magnets. Similar to how a Shure Beta 58 with its neodymium magnet capsule has a narrower pattern and hotter output compared to a Shure SM 58 with its wider pattern and ALINCO magnet capsule.

MIKE, I NEED YOUR IMMEDIATE HELP. Last week I've purchased an RODE NTG3 from an authorized RODE Dealer in my country and What i've got was half opened seal, *a dirty metal casing that the mic was not in* but actually in a nylon bag. there were scratches to the metal casing and inside the box door. I've talked with Rode and with the store and *they will replace the mic* for me. My question to you is, did you opened an NTG3 box let's say last year or so or maybe you have one, how does it look when it's unboxed, is the microphone in it's metal casing or in plastic bag alongside the fake leather bag? I've seen dozens of KZbin videos and every one of them display something different plus & in general are from 2014. Help!!! In my country those sell for $900.00 and I just want it to be genuine.Please, I need your expertise,Thank you _A loyal subscriber.

I`m listening true studio monitors, as far as youtube sound quality delivers I think the shure has the better more consistent sound where as the fin got more bassier or distortet. I do love the looks and the light better on the fin. The shure is never wrong tho. If I had to choose it`d be the shure.

Great review for the most part. I’ll offer a suggestion of not using the words “I think”, “I’m not sure” and “I believe” as much as it made it sound like you didn’t do your homework on these mics before doing the video.

Ross Gillis He was being honest. There were somethings he didn’t know before filming (like the available colors).

Well 10 months later I only know that because of my comment. My bank account is quite unhappy. After looking around and doing research I ran a crossed a heil fin picture showing some custom versions they did. One of them stuck in my mind it had green foam and green lights. Started digging around they don't do custom anymore. It's still lingered in my mind so I dug around some more found out that there is an open box section on their website. And then found one slightly cheaper on eBay. Decided on the black finish with white foam and decided to mod it myself. I cut a slot and inserted a switch and green LEDs so I can switch between them.
