Thanks ... I finally learned what to do with with Shotgun Microphone ... also .. why that Rycote furry beast costs so much and how effective it is in cancelling wind sounds
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 6 жыл бұрын
You might have your answer already after 6 years, but, those things are probably so expensive because they most not lose their fur when exposed to severe amounts of wind, but still "brake the wind" (to explain it very crude) without causing to much pickup loss, you need to be able to dry it without the thing shrinking or altering it's wind filtering capabilities. And they are very effective, a simple plosive filter can already save you during the summer when there is a light breeze (which will usually seperate your footage from that of people with a handycam who are simply unable to shield their microphone from any wind entering it), but they will quickly loose their effectiveness with stronger winds. They are probably used more in professional TV applications than you might think, simply for not realizing you don't hear any wind while there actually is a microphone equipped with such a device nearby the head of the host of a program (sometimes in combination with a lavalier mic with a "dead mouse" on it).

What's a good mic to record loudspeakers..the speakers have drive units that are scattered on the front of the cabinet. I wish to make a stereo recording of music through the loudspeakers. The speakers are spaced about 6ft apart and the listening position could be around 6 or 8 ft away. My ca,Cordero is a Panasonic hcx900m

Hi. Do you need a digital audio recorder, for example a Tascam or a Zoom, to use with the shotgun mic or would you still be able to get good sound without a recorder?
@shure
@shure 6 жыл бұрын
Most shotgun mics (and other condenser mics) will require a recording device of some kind as well as an XLR microphone input that provides phantom power. Some portable recorders have these features. Shure’s VP83F shotgun mic integrates a recorder that writes data to a Micro SD memory card. Otherwise, both the Shure VP83F and VP83 can connect to a DSLR camera or camcorder using a stereo 3.5mm connector. Both of these mics are powered by AA batteries.

This should be called "Applications for a shotgun microphone" or "How to use a shotgun microphone." A video about "how Shotgun microphones Work" would be about the technology that makes a shotgun microphone work and how the mic itself achieves its directionality. You think Shure themselves would at least attempt to give you a little shotgun mic history and even possibly show you inside some of their units.

You're definitely not going to want to use a highly directional mic like a shotgun for that application,. You would be better served by an omnidirectional mic. Our support team can make some suggestions. You can open up a ticket with them at www.shure.com/en-US/about-us/contact-us.

I agree, nice video, but they didn't actually explain HOW it works only THAT it works and longer = narrower arc. Where is the mic cartridge positioned and why do the side slits make a difference. Why not just use a short tube with no slits? There has to be a reason, so a video explaining it a but more technically would be useful, thanks.
@Dutch3DMaster
@Dutch3DMaster 6 жыл бұрын
It's been 5 years and you may have your answer by now, but for everyone else: The microphone cancels out sounds it picks up when not coming directly from the pickup angle (this will depend on sound pressure, they are not necessarily good at like a pop concert, simply for blaring speakers creating so much moving air they will notice anything coming from anywhere, basically). There are (usually) a couple of pickup elements along the slotted tube that listen to differences in loudness for sounds coming from a specific direction, anything around a certain threshold is perceived to be coming from the left or right instead of the front (if I recall correctly there have been microhpones that could listen to time differences in the sound signal simply for a sound from the left arriving at a slightly later point in time to the right side). What it picks up because it's basically the same in loudness (and in time, maybe, techniques could have changed a little over the years) it perceives to be right in front and only outputs that to the amplification circuitry.
