I know I’m late to the party but I’d like to give my input As much as I would have liked a conclusive ending that wrapped everything up in a nice bow, I did enjoy the special despite it not being that. It answered a handful of questions but left a lot to speculation. Speculation isn’t bad or poor writing, if anything it keeps fans interested even after things are over and done with. You mentioned that you weren’t in it for the mystery like a lot of people where and I realized that I wasn’t either. I was in it for the characters. I very quickly grew very attached to the main four and wanted them to give their stories. It’s nice that their stories aren’t over or wrapped up because the whole point of their adventure was to keep other people from ending or “wrapping up” their stories prematurely, even if it cost them a lot of mental and physical damage. My main complaint is that I would have liked to understand Neiru’s story a little better. I get that there’s a parallel to her and Frill, but she was so much more than what Frill was, at least to me. That’s my two cents on the subject. I hope someone can appreciate this!

I think I have the opposite issue with the special and last few episodes of WEP than you describe that being it explains way too much and those explanations seem to run counter to many of the themes of the series. Throughout the first dozen episodes it focuses on how systemic issues lead to suicide in contemporary Japan and how even if those systems like transphobia or bullying feel unstoppable that by working together and having a strong support system you can overcome those hurdles. It was using its sci fi as a framework for social commentary much like Eva does so the sci fi dosent need to be explained as its use is purely metaphorical. But then they start explaining the sci fi which weakens the metaphor and themes like "Oh the suicides are actually caused by a jealous robot girl because she was jealous that her dad was fucking another woman because Freud was right I guess even though we've barely touched on any fruedian ideas until the second to last episode" and then in the special showing that actually you need to serrate from your support system again? It just feels really confused in a way that actively takes away from the rest of the series which was really good. Like the special and series over all is like a 6/10 but I think one of the reasons so many people are upset with the special and end of the series is that it actively detracts from the rest of WPE when viewed as a whole

Yeah I had the same issues, it felt more like the special just waved away all the symbolism that it had built up in order to come up with a bland origin story to the catalyst of suicides. Not to mention that it creates some pretty alarming implications and confusing messages that run contrary to the previous episodes in the first half.

There was absolutely nothing that implied or suggested that Frill was causing these suicides. Most of the show is these girls fighting the people who were most responsible for the depression these girls struggled with and then subsequent suicides. This is just a weird case of people repeating what they heard and not thinking if it makes sense. And I’m pretty sure the show examines on adult and minor sa all throughout which was a big part of Freud’s findings.

Thank you. I watched the finale and actually enjoyed it so when I go on social media to find out that everyone hate it and saw everyone make videos on how bad it was I became so depressed and confused

In a way, im glad i watched wonder egg after it was completely done airing . Anyways thoughts on the show: a team of ppl who have a lot to say and aren't the best at getting it across in its writing, but really good at doing that in it's visuals and presentation Thoughts on the special: weirdly hollow? Really felt that they didn't have enough time to sort out the story in my mind. Also hate koito's storyline about how she's someone who apparently has a history of false sa accusations against her teachers. At the start, it felt like the series had a lot more nuanced view on students who crush on their teachers. I was expecting it to be smt along the lines of how she had a genuine (maybe romantic) connection with ai but had feelings for her teacher too and felt that confessing to the teacher might be a better idea than risking ai's friendship. Honestly i can somewhat like certain parts of all other characters' arcs besides neiru being an ai and koito's false accusations

I mean: As a regular episode, the special is great. But as a final episode...don't. And even if we see it as a regular episode, there are a lot of issues, cliffhangers and unneccesary plot twists. I love WEP, and I'm waiting for a very ending for this spectacular series. As Evangelion did in it's moment: Having a movie that works as the final for the anime.

Wonderegg still lives rent free in my head half a year later, so cleary its done something right. I do agree that wonderegg was an emotional trip, but i think thats part of why i didnt like the special. It didnt feel emotional in the same way as the rest of the show...or maybe i just disconnected with the show? I dont know Several things really brought it down for me. -lack of conclusion and the opening of more threads isnt necesarily a bad ending, but it left me unsatisfied in a bad way. (Not a feeling of wanting more, but a feeling as if i got something completely different than what was implied) -the recap, even though it shouldnt effect the specials quality, really brought things down considering there was already a recap episode. It almost feels unfair to hold it against the show, but its still an element of the show. - The emotion was gone for me. maybe that was the point, but the feelings i had going through the series dwindled towards the end and in the special. Im not saying there was no emotion in the episode, there was alot to feel things about, but thigns started to feel absured and cold. Though I think my problems are with the ending of the show just as much as the special. I think for me too I watched with the feelings in mind. I definitely wanted to know things, but strangely enough the things they did reveal were kind of made me like the show a bit less, and the stuff they didnt reveal made me feel robbed because they were introduced so late. This show definitely still sits positively in my heart though and the parts i liked i really enjoyed.

No ending should ever be confusing. No matter what happens during the finale of any show you should know one thing, "it's over". This ending constantly throws out more and more ideas like it's not the last episode at all and it always hints towards a season 2 that we will never get. You also completely ignored the fact that 25 minutes of the 45-minute special was a recap. The ending is terrible, there is nothing good about it. In production, workers were mismanaged and even hospitalized due to crunch. The animation was cheap and didn't emulate what we had in the series' first 8 episodes. Character dialogue is terrible past episode 8 and worst of all none of the girls get any closure. I mean the show literally ends on a plot hole, we were never told that the girls are teleported to the egg world but rather it was just a dream but Neiru is trapped in it with Frill? And if Neiru didn't kill herself how is Ai going to save her? 2/10 is my rating for this finale and that's only because of my love for the show.

I don't think these are unreasonable reasons to dislike the finale. Though, I do wonder if you were trying to convince me of this ending's lack of quality because just about all of your reasons for disliking it are already addressed in this video. I don't think an ending has to feel conclusive to be good nor do I believe it must not be confusing. I don't value the show's diegesis as much as most so I don't mind the new plot points or plot holes. I think the animation (and presentation on the whole) was still fantastic despite missing some stuff that I loved about the base show. I will say that not addressing the recap was purposeful. And it was because it wouldn't even be worth talking about. If I were doing research into the production issues of the show, then I'd obviously talk about it, but that's not what this video is about. I see absolutely no disagreement on the fact that the recap is boring and doesn't add anything to the show so I didn't think it was important to spend time on.

@@Krossxc Understandable, this is how I feel in a way because when I watched the show I thought we were getting a second season from the start but when we got our first recap episode I found out the show would only get 12 episodes. That's when I started to worry because it seemed like they were wasting time with the show and before you know it it's just over. This was supposed to be anime of the year, I wish I could see all of the ideas tossed around in the later episodes in a second season. If we were getting a second season this ending would get a 5/10 from me.

Theory: Neiru don't kill her self. She has the conscience of Frill, that's why she talked "alone" in one of the scenes of the special. Frill is trying to be a real human. Neiru is the mind that she needs, and that's why she tell her to become a real girl when they met.

"But what do you do when you need to use the public restroom?" I mean its wasnt about the restroom but Wep maybe hinted at something like that? The "trauma" of The second girl momoe saves was of an old lady yelling about the train being for women only. I'm guessing that girl is also trans?
@Krossxc
@Krossxc 3 жыл бұрын
The public restroom line was a shorthand example meant to represent situations where society forces a particular behavior on you that might conflict with your gender identity. WEP does have Momoe and the trans characters who killed themselves encounter these types of social situations, but the way it resolves those conflicts is by screaming "I'M A GIRL!" when in reality, that's not going to solve all your problems. But like I said, that's not what WEP is trying to accomplish. It's not about exploring the nuanced social situations of the different issues it covers. It's about screaming "I'M A GIRL!" and I love it for that.

I mean, it's kind of undeniable the special was a rushed attempt at a s2 hook-not left open to be mysterious or let the viewers decide their ideal ending, but to bait viewers back in for a second season that just never came to be. I respect your opinion, it's totally fine to like the special :) I personally like some of its concepts, but, like the show, it fell sort of embarrassingly short. Never really a good idea to imply an AI is the cause for the suicide rates of teenagers...it comes across as quite distasteful to me, who has struggled with such issues in my own teen years.

i like this take on the finale. it’s been a while since i watched it, but i remember being so devastatingly disappointed by it i stopped engaging with wonder egg content at all for a year. like i don’t remember hating an ending so much since how i met your mother. i’m excited to rewatch it now though, and re-experience it from another perspective

I liked it too. Ofc I had to find explanations elsewhere cause there were many things I did not get. But I was mildly satisfied with both the factual explanations, and interpretations. We could say it's still an open ending. I don't really like open endings overall, yet still many plot points were solved in the end. We have plenty of answers now, even if they made us feel quite hopeless, and blue. I will really, really miss this anime. I sometimes find myself listening to the OST and feel nostalgic about it.

I really enjoyed it. Perhaps this due to the fact that as a girl, who was once a teen, I have a deeper connection with these themes. The last episode, yes, could've been better. Honestly had they had perhaps one or 2 more episodes (not speaking on the special) would've been a little better. However, in my opinion, none of it was bad. Because, again, as a girl A LOT unspoken things were said and done and I understood them all to a T. (I wasn't fond of the ep. 8 recap though). I truly hope there is a season 2. This show even started a conversation between me and my mom of feelings we had when we were younger, and how thoughts of suicide and overall death in general follows teenage girls (yes this is the same for boys, and no girls aren't more prone to this just because they're girls, however there are specific dangers that follow girls at times [younger girls at that] just for being girls). Would recommend and watch again. Loved it. AND the OP slaps

idk i just hated the "plot" but loved the premise. The plot felt... boring and contrived and i guess to me it felt like it came from a place of malice, sorta like the suicide of rachel foster. To me the thing i loved about it was this struggle and beautiful drama of helping and seeing girls that had commited suicides in the hope of saving them and in turn the protags becoming stronger and wiser in the journey, regardless of the destination. I wish i hadnt seen the last episodes or the special because the explanation of how the world works and why it was created felt unnecessary and badly excecuted. I rather no explanation than a bad one every day. Basically i just wanted an infinite superhero show about trauma and girls 🤣 but thats not what wonder egg ended up being and probably not what it was intended to be from the beginning. that doesnt mean in my mind that the show is bad, is just that the plot is not for me. But i can for sure see how someone with different expectations and that enjoyed the show for different reasons might love the entirety of it! or even love the ending more than the set up. Different strokes for different folks :P still got something out of it anyway so im happy

I didn't like the final thrid of Wonder Egg, including the special, because I feel like I came out of it being more traumatised than before. Seeing the characters suffer so much and lose their pets and one of the friendship group's members, plus Acca and Ura-Acca getting away with everything as if they were completely justified. The show betraying me after saying it had my back by blaming Koito's death on herself instead of the people that hurt her, and by extention the people that hurt me, it feels like it was a mistake to watch this show as someone with trauma from domestic abuse. Now I can't even look at the characters from the show without being reminded of the spiral it threw me into after I watched it. It isn't a bad show but be careful before watching it if you are someone with trauma.

Totally agree. I had heard of the fandom’s opinion of the special episode long before i started watching. I went in knowing, and i didn’t care. I wanted to see it for myself. By the end, I could barely wrap my head around how anyone could find it bad. I really liked it, i feel like it worked much better as an ending than episode 12. I wouldn’t a continuation, but i also don’t think it’s necessary.
