I hope they continue WEP. The end felt rushed or unfinished, but I still loved the show so much. If they were to continue, I’d loved to see the girls reunite. They went through so much together, they had such a good bond, and it’s honestly just sad to think of some of them feeling alone again. Even if they remind friends or reunite in season 2, hopefully we get some sort of update but how Rika and Momoe have grown.

It would be better if they made a manga instead. It would give them the time to have better writing and they wouldn’t have to make a recap every five minutes!

I hope for a season 2 to happen, this show has too much potential and not many people can grasp at the signs the Special episode might’ve been given. I think sharing this channel’s existence and the analysis video towards others who have seen the Special episode who may have thought of it negatively should watch this and hopefully have a change of heart from viewing the series as being wasted Plus many things about the show still linger and makes me curious if the second season might clear things up. Will we ever know who Rika’s dad was, what is Japan Plati really about and how did they manage to create the Wonder Eggs? A Pomander‘s development and creation, and what happens if one of the egg missions fails? If failure, the girl who is the egg dies surely, but what about the person trying to save them? Will Acca’s daughter come back as an egg person to probably be saved? These are mostly things that’ll surely be on my mind for a while and hope that it can be answered

This analysis makes me think that WEP is a Coming Of Age story. You don't keep all your friends and many people throughout your life are more moments(?) for lack of a better term. This video is a diamond in the rough in my opinion, a must watch from the usual content that we get. All in all, loved the analysis and I hope to see more of it.

My biggest issues with WEP is the production issues, crunch time all of that, but also the fact that they made us familiar with the other characters like Rika and Momoe and then they just ditch them on the last episode, it feels like they were secondary all of this time and I don't like that, i liked all 4 of them with their own problems and personalities.

It's not really the production's fault but the writer's. He said in an interview he just- wrote each episode with no overarching plan just doing what he felt like in the moment. And shipped it off without talking to the director or anything. They kinda just worked with what they had

Thank you for this video. This was the first positive analysis I have seen of the Wonder Egg Priority finale. I was definitely one of the many people who were upset with the ending. It just felt like the series kept building up to something, only to seemingly disregard it all in the end. With that said - Your analysis was so interesting and thought provoking. I never thought to look at the special through the eyes of Ai. That makes it more interesting, and I will definitely be watching the special again at some point, with this new viewpoint in mind :) I absolutely LOVED the series, so even though the ending was not what I expected, that doesn’t change the fact that the series was an absolutely thrilling ride.

I like how out of the group of 4, Ai is the only one in the end to go after Neiru to save her, it shows just how difficult it is to fight your fears and not run away from them.

I agree with most of this except for Koito’s suicide or accident I guess, it felt like a massive fumble. I prefer to just interpret her as a Girl From Nowhere (referencing a horror anthology series of a teenage girl who serially transfers schools and puts herself in dangerous situations to expose the students and staff.. in fact the Mr Sawaki plot is the same as the first episode of that show). She sees a suspicious man offering private one on one sessions with his female students, investigates and starts to manipulate him, he tries doing something in one of these sessions and she enacts revenge. So in this case, punishing him for perceived wrongdoing. Though I doubt that was the intention.

I’m replying with a much needed footnote to this.. I recently found out the show I had mentioned here is basically an adaptation of Tomie. Then I read the first volume of Tomie and watched some of the movies. The similarity (really with the first volume) is striking: the way that Tomie and Koito die are nearly identical. Tomie is in a relationship with her teacher, and while on a school trip she goes to talk with him on the edge of a cliff - another boy interjects because he is jealous and she had been dating him beforehand. Tomie falls off the cliffside infront of a class of students and her teacher, who then attempt to cover up the incident by chopping her into pieces and scattering them across town (before she comes back and haunts them, of course). Not sure what this adds to the conversation but it makes me more suspicious of what was said about how she died
@jtheweeb9964

When I watched this special I truly question if Mr. Sawaki is a reliable narrator of Koito's story. I believe we are still just as blind to what really happened as we have been the whole series because Koito's side of the story is essentially lost now that she has no memory. We have no way of knowing if Mr. Sawaki is telling the truth or not because there is nobody else who can confirm or deny his story. Wouldn't Koito being the manipulative villain and her suicide being an accident be a little too convenient for the man who is telling this story. I don't know, seems very much still unresolved for me. And what about him being the great evil boss for the alternate reality Ai. Is it possible that he did more than we know to Ai in place of Koito?
@ChalkMuncher
@ChalkMuncher Жыл бұрын
@@jtheweeb9964 I think that him being the final boss for Ai was really just perceived, cause he was mirroring a lot of Ai's thoughts, questions, and the half hearted theories the other girls placed into her about him. The other Ai had no trauma with him and just in general a wonder boss doesn't have to be the trauma itself, just an image of the trauma, and Mr. Sawaki was always there in her memories of Koito before she died and Ai had no idea of anything that was going on. That coupled with her own thoughts and what Sawaki had told her the other day, its fair to say Sawaki was very prevalent in the trauma. And well if he was evil and manipulative then it would only have been in the world that the Ai that killed herself lived in. Though I dont think that Sawaki was evil either. The Mr.Sawaki in our Ai's world is shown to not have any predatory intentions, and to even be a trusting and loving parental figure. Though I can agree we dont know the other half of the story but its safe to assume that what Sawaki said was the real order of events, A truth thats wrong and difficult to understand, something that wasn't even suicide but an accident. Something that went against the character of a person she had known and loved, but didn't know much about. Its also kinda ties into the many themes of this show Idk theres a lot to talk about with this show and a lot of theories one could make but its the importance that it doesn't matter exactly how things happen or what the truth is, and all you know about the truth is just as true as whats hidden from you and moving on is essential to acceptance. thats one thing I love about this show

I feel like the reason the reason ai didn’t want to call neiru is because the whole story everyone in the eggs ask for help. Nobody in all of the episodes had ever refused help from ai. So when the closest person to her refuses to even ask for help. with no idea of what to do, she gave up because she didn’t know how to help her friends when they didn’t want to ask or be helped. That’s why she doesn’t want to talk no jutsu rika or momo. In the last episode she realizes she’s been walking backwards this whole time “why didn’t koito come to me to help” she’s saying and thinking the same things in the episode as in the first one. She decides that she can’t give up. Can’t give up on herself, on her friends and on neiru. She decides that even if she’s rejected again like she was with koito she’s still going to save her because what neiru needs right now is someone to understand her and pull her out of solitude like koito did for her. Her saying that she’s back symbolically refers to her becoming the person she was in episode one who ran towards her problems, anxieties and fears head first to save a friend.

Finally watched episode 13 today, basically found my way here straight after. I feel like this episode was flawless for the story. I was a little confused at first when she saw Koito again, thought she might have ended up in a parallel universe and not just the fabric of everything changing in her own timeline. The Karaoke scene was where it hit me of how hard depression had hit though, it replicated Agretsuko with her outlet of going to drink away her problems and let off some steam. Plus just some of the people I’ve been around over the years that are struggling behind the scenes always do spontaneous stuff such as this. This episode was the reminder of what the show was about while showing us the possibilities of what else it could still become. Ai proved to herself and everyone else that things do get better even when it’s hard but there’s still demons to fight that will be at the back of everyone’s minds and I feel if they do season 2 it will be her taking on that fight for everyone and not just for herself, whilst showing others how to carry on and continue to fight. Feel like I’ve ranted but, the fight against Frill has barely even started. The possibilities of what could happen are endless at this point

I do like looking at ai's arc through this perspective. I guess for me its hard to not look at the larger element of Wonder egg. Even if the story started with and was only about Ai, it introduced more and made it more about other things as well. My biggest gripe i the idea of frill and the temptation of death. If death was a vague concept, and not a force to fight, it would be easy to focus just on AI. I do really like how you piece it all together though. I agree Ai's character has reached a reasonable end, i just don't feel i can say wonder egg is about AI after the introduction of frill and the temptation of death

Great video! You did a fantastic job with the analysis to the point that I almost forgot Neiru turning out to be a robot was laughable. Jokes aside, though, I didn't have as negative an initial reaction to episode 13 as it seems a lot of people did, but even so this video made me appreciate more of what it did well. I missed a few of the parallels to episode one you pointed out when I watched it myself and it was cool to see them put side by side. Re: your note about Frill's temptation (which I did read), I'm not certain "giving in to Frill's temptation" and "committing suicide" are meaningfully different in the context of WEP. Although Frill framed the choice as "becoming human," I suspect that she meant that in the sense that only a thinking, feeling person could self-destruct in that way, so dying would prove her humanity. Frill seems to me to be a mostly symbolic entity that forces people toward suicide by whatever means necessary, so presumably she was doing the same to Neiru. But really, the important thing is that Ai wants to save her; does it even matter from what?

You know after watching this video I GREATLY appreciate with how you explained the analysis, because you are correct. This was pretty much Ai’s arc revolving around her growth, and you’ve helped me see a new perspective into WEP after seeing the final episodes. I’m a fan of the show as I greatly enjoyed the entire adventure these girls went through, I want more people who saw the show as being ‘bad’ or ‘ruined potential’ to watch this analysis and think carefully over what this season was about. I wish and hope that WEP can make a few more seasons as not only revolving around Ai, but this time also focusing on the types of hardships her friends can go through in their own way and how to move on.

Cmon Ai hurry up and save Neiru from committing suicide. Make up for Koito. And that's not addressing all the forgotten plot threads, producion issues and that this doesn't work as a thematic conclusion to the show as a whole.

Ok that convinced me about episode 13 isn’t that bad, because the episode isn’t stupid after all and after I believed, but still this is not the best end they could give about this artwork because of budget issues ( this show didn’t get an audience in Japan). This was originally about teenage girls suicide and then switch it up at the end to make the 14-year-old girl, the bad guy. The best friend, the whole reason the main character started her whole journey, wasn’t suffering or being exploited by any adults or peers or terrible systemic practices that needed to be discussed… Which felt like a really weird and very wrong way for the show to close. so him saying that we don’t get it just feels like “mansplaining “

While I think some of the theming and resolutions were decent, I was more initially upset by all of the production issues. I figured there was planned substance there and that it just got mishandled due to time crunch and episode constraints. If this show was 24 episodes instead of 12 (since episode 8 was a recap), I think it would've flowed a lot better. Also how did you do the effect at 9:20 ? Anyone can talk forever about what art intended to do, and while intentions are important, you have to keep their execution in mind and acknowledge that, even if it's messy. While episode 13 may have symbolic connections to the rest of the series, it wasn't very connected to the end of episode 12, nor did it deal with most of the things that episode 12 and the rest of the series were building toward. You literally have to ignore every aspect of episode 13 that isn't Ai's character arc to argue that it's a hit, especially in comparison to the rest of the show. That is not the show's creators doing a great job, that is you living in a bubble where you don't have to acknowledge that the thing you like is flawed. Obviously you can't go super hard on the people who made this, but there were aspects of this that were kinda goofy and out of place and to an extent they're still responsible for the final product. I think this episode should have gotten delayed, and as the people behind this show have proven they can make fantastic work, I feel like the responsibility for this ending falls much more heavily upon whatever system forced them to rush and release a half-baked finale than it does the team working on WEP. But in my opinion, the distortion of reality to view a work of art's flaws as less major is a downright unhealthy practice for a lover of art. We should be advocating for environments and combinations of talents that are conducive to good work, not pretending that those environments and combinations are good enough while broadly sweeping aside any evidence to the contrary.

I have had some conversations with fans of the series about this very point. I also agree that my argument was quite narrow-minded in scope. I just wanted to make something positive when seemingly everyone else was speaking negatively about the series. I like to keep things as positive as I can, even if it has flaws. I guess I'm just a guy that likes to be positive when everyone else is being negative. However, I'm really bad at talking about flaws about things unless I find them egregious errors. I'll take your point into mind the next time an anime or a manga is coming under fire for being bad. Instead of ignoring all the bad aspects and only acknowledging the good aspects, I'll try to keep a balanced view. I won't take back how I think episode 13 is connected to Ai's character arc, but I think it is important for me to acknowledge that it didn't connect with anything else and it wasn't done very well. I'm not sure how I would balance these two things, but it's an effort that's worth it. Thanks for bringing this up. I'm working to become a great anime reviewer and I can't do that without constructive criticism. Thank you for the feedback.

Wonder Egg Priority is still a fantastic series for the most part, and I think it'd be a shame if all of that incredible work is forgotten in the wake of a messy ending. I just think that we have a responsibility to acknowledge the aspects of what we care about that go wrong, especially with the rise of stan culture. Keep making videos! So If Ai's character arc is completed now, and if there will one day be a possibility of a second season, maybe either Neiru, Rika, or Momoe will be the become the main character!

14:38 Why do we believe the art teacher? Children that are SA'ed tend to get SA again and again (look it up). I'm wondering if that's the case with Koito. She's getting abused, teacher gets caught and commits. She transfers only to get abused again, gets bullied, gets betrayed by AI, kills herself. And with the constant theme of child exploitation and abuse I think this fits more.

I know this video is two years old at this point and no one will see it but still. So I rewatched WEP today and and on the final episode I can agree it felt a lot more put together on a second watching. But something I wanted to say about your part on Koito is I don't know if Ai could've made a difference. Koito was already showing problematic behaviors in her old school, a clear sign she was on edge or even bullied back then. Or maybe she was just one of those people who cant help themselves and struggle in spite of themselves and not in spite of others. She drove a man at her old school to suicide, someone with a family. Even if she was bullied before then her being bullied at her new school hardly would've made a difference. In the end she met Ai who may have been a way for her to seek help. And she was never mean or anything like that to her. But she was using Ai nonetheless. I don't know if she even considered Ai her best friend. I dont think they ever mentioned how long they had known eachother but I don't think it could've been that long. Ai stated at some point in the show that she hardly even knew Koito and we dont see much personal conncection between them other than Ai's reality of that day and their relationship. Neiru is explosive and troubled, she has struggled with so much and takes it out on the person she's been using to get away from her reality, not Ai, but Sawaki. And probably that teacher she drove to suicide too. I don't know what would've happened if Neiru didnt slip but I dont think she would've ended up killing herself, perhaps had everything gone the way she wanted Sawaki would either kill himself or save her in on way or another. Koito literally slipped out of Ai's life as Sawaki started to slip in to her life. I dont think she saw Ai, she saw a pretty girl she might've wanted to help, that was a lot like her but we don't know. In the end we don't know. Koito is a character that might never have a resolution or a definitive answer to all the questions she gave us, but in the end thats the point. Theres a lot of what if's but all that matters is Koito changed Ai's life. Ai would never have had a friend to face school with, Ai would never have shut herself out from her place of trauma, Ai would never have met the other girls. She wouldn't have lived if not for Koito and thats all that matters. Koito might not be a good person but she was good to Ai and she let Ai live because she was there, and all thats left is moving on and finally moving forward. This show is easily one of my favorites EVER. Its great as what it is but it could be even better and maybe even bring WEP to fans who felt betrayed back into their hearts. Cause its a fantastic show and I have some gripes, but even so no one who watched it can deny they at least thought it was once fantastic, and for me I think it was all fantastic. Though i'm high on copium I have high hopes it might return someday, maybe even soon. They did a lot to set up for a second season, with even the last line Ai said being that she's back. No one who's watched it has that much expectations for another season but despite that, I still think theres a real possibility and It's honestly all i'm hoping for. So someday, if wonder egg can return, I'd be just about the happiest I could possibly be.

You gotta remember another big reveal was that they never really saved there person just a version of said person from a different reality so instead of it fixing the trauma its more like a bandaid . So I do think if the point of the show was to switch from worrying about one friend to another then it had so much potential that was wasted through one ova . It was bad . Show was great ova bad .

I don't know if you watch these comments still, but I'm totally with you, and i really think the biggest issues always had to do with the stated reason Koito jumping had to do with the teacher. This inverts a lot of the expected thematic stuff and kind of fails hard enough to make me wonder about earlier episodes. Everything else is basically exactly how i felt. i was sad nothing new was announced, and there's even a Drama CD about them all being friends after saving Neiru and preparing for Ai's mom's wedding, and i want to see how they get there, but i totally understand Momoe not going or Rika stopping when she did. those totally make sense. everyone giving up because it's scary totally makes sense. But at the end of the known timeline, they're all together and they're friends again. but Ai steeling herself for her friend finally does complete her arc well. I just think the stuff about Koito, and making Neiru a robot is mad weird. Not answering questions about the wonder eggs or the company or whatever is not really my concern, my concern is with the girls and how Koito's suicide was handled (i don't even mind the revived girls not caring about the reviver, that's kind of cool too) I guess my other wish was that the Acas got what was coming to them, because boy are they assholes who caused all this, and the final episodes don't reckon with that at all. i like your take, and i agree with it, i don't really mind things being unanswered in shows, but the disappointing bits for me were the thematic inversions of the show suddenly... seeming like it's not taking Koito's side, or having her suicide be an accident where she's trying to get back at the teacher or ruining his life.

I think that the last episodes reception would have been better (not completely fixed, there is still some off with this episode) if the production team didn't decide to hype up this episode as some kind of cap off to the overall story, rather than the resolution to ai's character arc

While yes, the anime pulls Ai's character arc together largely well, it doesn't excuse a miserable handling of other character arcs or any resolution of the plot. If they had used the two episodes they spent with recap with actual plot, then all the rushed ideas in the last episodes might have been less rushed, I honestly believe that most of these ideas - safe from Koito's "suicide" (A mistake you made in the video) - were really good, which is why I am currently working on a restructuring/rewriting. But as it stands, they tried to sell the prelude to a finale as the finale. Which might have been their biggest mistake aside from the production issues.

Don't feel dumb! My best friend challenged me to think beyond the hate of the community, so I thought about it. And thought...and thought...and then I came up with this! It just kinda worked out! I had to talk to a lot of people and write a pretty dynamic script before I could even start!

I honestly don't care that the ending sucks. Sure, i obviously would've loved if this series, one that i love profoundly and resonates with me on such a deep and complex level, had an equally resonant ending that played to the shows strengths. But i cant bring myself to hate the ending MUCH LESS the show. The journey i went on with this show touched me so much, nothing short of a truly vile, offensive ending would effect that experience negatively. I know that from the point of view of the current anime community it seems unlikely, but i really hope we get another season some day. Provided it is free of the production issues and maybe one or two more drafts of the script, not only could it retroactively change the general fan receiption of the series as a whole, but also elevate Wonder Egg Priority into the truly era defining show i have faith it can become.

I get your point. This review made me love the show again because i hold it so dear to my heart and i believe that if we can get a season 2 or a movie, they can clean up their act. BUT. i genuinely feel like the show just had too much going on and when the OVA and finale came it was a lot more loose threads that only bombarded us with too much information. We had too many questions that we could no longer notice the little things that you may have noticed. I'm am just struggling to understand what the entire show means, not just Ai as a character. First her friend kills herself or she fell... i don't know for sure, and she saves her life. she comes back and she's a dick, alright thats okay. very nuaced. But now she is going to go on and repeat the same cycle, for another friend? why should Ai be risking her life for friendship in the first place? Why can't she just choose life like her friends. What these girls went through was traumatising and i too would honestly choose my life over going through that shit again. Neiru, on top of that is not just a dumb dumb, she knows what she was getting herself into, not saying she deserves it but it seems like she knew more than the other three girls. Ai choosing to go back into this is kind of like choosing death, sort of like commiting the deed they were saving their friends from. In the end, so far, it brings Ai back to the beginning, she has no friends and once again, risking her life for someone who might not want to be saved, saving a friend she will not even have in the end. Then again, another season or movie could make it all make sense.

A lot of people are calling Wonder Egg Priority trash. And to those people, I ask a simple question - Did you watch the whole thing? If you answered Yes, why did you stick around? You could have dropped it at any point, but you didn't. You watched it to the end because you were invested, you cared about it. And that's why the ending hurts so much. You didn't hate the show, you hate what they did to it. Wonder Egg Priority was a victim of injustice. One of the rare times a fictional story conveys important messages. To have that torn away is greatly upsetting.
