Shuttle Bus Conversion 7 Air Conditioning Heat Pump Install

Black paint and bunch of windows make it very difficult to cool my Shuttle camper conversion. I tested a 5000btu window air conditioner but it was not up to the task so I ordered a 13500 btu heat pump and this is how I installed it.

A white roof outside will help

Paint the top of the roof white to help with the heat during sunlight hours. Only paint the very top so that you can not see the white from the ground. That way you keep the black look of the bus but help with the heat.

Try to paint at least the roof with a white elastomeric(sp) paint that will reflect the heat better than even regular paint.

Curtain across the front separating the cab.

Cut out insulation for each window and cover it with heavy curtains and put a curtain between the driver seat and the kitchen.

It's the radiant heat caused by your dark roof. I drove a high top navy blue wheelchair van for years.... I could never keep the patients in the back cool in the summer. I could always feel the heat beating down from the roof. Try a cool roof first !

I think of a bus like that with no insulation and all windows all the way around being just like a greenhouse. Greenhouses get very very hot.

May need fan to help circulation and for windows find material you like and add insulation to back that you could roll up. On the front the do make the rv cover for the outside ( although it it white) . I would wonder if putting the ceramic window tint( very light but heat blocking ) on all the windows especially in the front. Do know you're in a bad state for regulation but some of the tint is light enough to where you barely notice it unless it wrinkles

Excellent video as always. Very informative. Just wanted to tell u something I learned a couple years back. My roof top AC works great in a Canadian summer but when I took my rig to 110 deg Texas summer it didn’t preform as well. My RV tech informed me that these roof top units only cool up to a 20 deg difference. I really hope this is not the case with your unit, but just wanted share what I’ve learned. It’s the least I can do to repay u for all u have taught me. 👍✌️🇨🇦

damn Jay dog you have not popped up in my feed for a long time, it’s like realizing you really miss something good thats been gone! maybe real dark window tint, a thick leather cab curtain and like you said Insulation and curtains

So you over there are struggling keeping your van cool, we here in Europe are all on heating and insulation... :-D Insulation would help, I guess, keeps the heat in or out...sepereating the cab would be nice, too... Thx for the update! :-D

Watch the compressor kick in when running on generator. I bet it cycles through time delay, struggling with surge. Need a true soft start, to run properly on that generator. Without it, you will heat damage compressor windings over time.

Install a Microair Easy Start and it will work just fine. You could even run it with a 2000 watt generator.

BTU's aren't you're issue. All that glass and you're black roof. Damn man at last put reflective coverings over them. How is it fair to judge the AC units when you have no insulation and you're surrounded by glass? Magnifying glass???

Can you add a secondary (Well sealed) window pane on the inside of each window to provide “air gap” insulation? Kinda like the the old house retro fit kits to convert single pane windows to double panes, cheap and can still see out of windows...looks like the existing windows have a reflective coating of some sort?

Is the fiberglass roof strong enough to support that A.C. ? Will it eventually cause stress cracks ?
