Wanted to try my hand at a live jam with my Korg Volcas. These little synths are seriously a ton of fun to play with. Kaoss Pad is the master clock, and Arturia KeySteps are last in my chain (since recording this I picked up another KeyStep) controlling one Volca Bass unit and the Keys. The vocals are live. AKG d224e into Logic Pro X via Focusrite ISA One and UA Apollo Twin for compression and reverb, then back out into the Monotron Delay for crazy distorted delay before being recorded into the 2-track Zoom.
If you enjoy what I do, there will be lots more to come, so please subscribe or connect with me on social media!

Don't know how I got here but that was awesome, much better than the shit most listen to on the radio! Back in the day(early 90's), I used to have a Korg M1, I thought it was a technological marvel at the time. Its amazing how things have progressed but there still needs to be a talent behind it all! Good job!!

Marcel Pacheco Alcalde haha thanks man! I'm working on it. I mainly make music in Logic. This is just a side thing for me to practice my sound design/improvisation. I never used to bother with really digging into my soft synths and understanding them until I got hardware synths and got excited about tweaking the knobs and whatnot. www.soundcloud.com/iamshxrwood if you want to hear some of my other stuff. Thanks for listening! 😀

Nice Jam! Although unfortunately it sounds like the vocal sample in the beginning is experiencing clipping. Was it mixed like that or did the recording just pick it up weirdly?
@iamshxrwood
@iamshxrwood 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's live. You can see the microphone at the bottom of the screen. It's run into the monotron delay, which feeds back and distorts like crazy. It's intentional.
@YGRAVITY

Thank you so much for liking my comment🙏🏻 Can you make a video where you show how w everything is wired together? I dont exactly understand if your mic is goin directly into the monotron delay or at first in the mixer together with all the volcas and after all that mixing stuff into the monotron delay and into the zoom recorder?!🤔😬 Aaaand second question is how did you wired up the arturia keyboard? Is it connected from usb to midi with converter and connected to the volca bass? Hope you can help me i just try to understand and learn😅🥰🙌🏻
@iamshxrwood
@iamshxrwood 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had this specific setup put together in maybe two years otherwise I'd make a video lol. But the mic went into Logic for processing (EQ, comp and verb), and back out into the monotron delay. Then the monotron delay went into the mixer. I also have some Behringer submixers that I used to give myself more channels. All of the drums were on one submixer in this video, so they only took up one channel on the main mixer. I also ran the drum submix into a channel strip before the mixer for a little bit of glue. Lastly the the KP3 was the master clock. KP3 MIDI out > Volca Beats MIDI in Volca Beats sync out > next Volca sync in I continued the chain until the last Volca bass, and instead went: Volca sync out > Arturia KeyStep sync in Arturia KeyStep MIDI out > Volca Bass MIDI in Any other questions feel free to ask! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Great track and nice workflow! Quick question, how do you find using the KeyStep with the Volcas? I'm still undecided on whether of buying it because I've heard a few complaints about the stop button stopping the Volcas and also not being suitable for basslines because it retriggers the keys on each step. Would be great to hear your thoughts on it!
@squallstar
@squallstar 7 жыл бұрын
haha thanks! by monologue keys you mean the keystep's? :) yeah I bet it's much more fun to jam on those keys than the ones on the Volca Keys itself. In regards to the start/stop issue, the thing is that I don't really understand what's the use of start/step on the keystep within a jam session. Is it needed? I'm asking because my workflow - I guess - would be that I record on the Keys sequencer while playing the keystep. Perhaps for the Bass I'd sequence from the keystep directly because I can get 4 bars patterns. Makes sense?
@iamshxrwood
@iamshxrwood 7 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Valbusa I actually got a korg monologue and that's what I jam on instead. keystep's keys aren't bad though. I actually just pre program sequences and use the keystep to fire them off. if I'm using a keystep, it comes last in the chain, so I don't start and stop my whole sequence. not sure what happened to my other comment 😐
@iamshxrwood
@iamshxrwood 7 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Valbusa also currently I use two different keysteps to control 4 volcas. so each pair is set to midi ch 1 and 2, and I flip between using the keystep to play/sequence and the volca's built in sequencer. it works pretty well
@squallstar
@squallstar 7 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by last in the chain? I thought the start/stop is triggered by midi, right? :-\ I'm tempted to get a monologue but I think I'll save a bit more and get a minilogue instead. Polyphony is a big plus for me :)
@iamshxrwood
@iamshxrwood 7 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Valbusa oh sorry. I have the KP3 acting as the master clock, and everything is connected via sync 3.5mm, even the keystep. since the keystep is last (before going midi out to a volca), but is connected only by 3.5mm cable, it won't respond to any start stop messages. and yeah I preordered the monologue. if I could go back I would probably go with the mini as will. my setup is way too big now haha. I actually only got into these as a way to cure my producer's block. it worked, so I'm mainly focusing on that right now haha 😅

Nice! Did you use the KeyStep as the master clock?
@iamshxrwood
@iamshxrwood 7 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! I actually use the Kaoss Pad as the master clock. I found that if I tried to use Sync out from the KeyStep to another Volca, that the sequencer on that Volca would wig out, especially if I changed how the clock divided, so I actually have the KeyStep last in the chain.

Kyle, Arturia KeyStep is only sending a Time to All volcas? I need some help to connect / sync volca key + novation circut + Arturia KeyStep. I want circuit novation as a master tempo clock to Volca and to keystep. And Keystep as a midi controller to volca and circuit in diferent channels.. What is the best way to do this? Thanks
@iamshxrwood
@iamshxrwood 6 жыл бұрын
Música em Dicas Hi. Sorry, I'm unfamiliar with the Novation Circuit, so I'm not sure how it would fit. A rough guess would be be Novation MIDI out > Keystep MIDI in Keystep MIDI out > MIDI Splitter IN MIDI Splitter out 1 > Novation MIDI in MIDI Splitter out 2 > volca key changed to midi ch 2 And no, the master clock here is the Kaossilator KP3+ being sent to a midi splitter. In my opinion, it's easiest to have your MIDI coming from something that is going to be running constantly, and won't be affected by starting or stopping. Good luck!!
