I love when a character is so clearly written that you don't just see who they are, but who they're going to become. I have such a solid mental image of what this character might be in 10 years: happily married to a loud and colorful partner, fills his commutes with biographies about Keats on CDs from the library and the one time he's comfortable being in a large group is contra dancing or something. Very "Passing Remark" by William Stafford. I adore him already.

When she saw him bump directly into his crush from that English class, she almost facepalmed. He had been talking about them for weeks, about how smart they were, and how cute they were, and how he was utterly hopeless. Which was true, he was hopeless at that sort of thing. She went to go and help him out, she was his self-declared best friend after all. But, something stopped her. He was still definitely nervous, but his little crush seemed... amused? She needed more information. It probably wasn't the most graceful she had ever been, hiding behind a large plant in the hallway, but hey it was for his own good. He was hopeless after all. As they talked to each other, she found herself more and more... hopeful. He was a great guy after all, not her type, but still great. As soon as they mentioned reading his poetry, she silently cheered them on. He had spent ages on that assignment after all. And they complimented him on his writing? Well, maybe the idiot has taste, after all, they really seemed okay. She nearly stepped out of her hiding place and smacked him upside the head when he started being all self-deprecating again, what was it going to take for him to deal with that? And when past dating came up.... yikes. She remembered how much that had sucked. But.... his little crush... wait were they.... flirting?? Oh yeah, they were definitely flirting, this was promising. "He'd noticed them?" Oh yeah, if by noticing you mean pining constantly to your very tired best friend. Who is now so invested she is hiding behind a plant. Which is definitely weird.... focus! Did they just ask him for coffee?? Holy... wait why was he asking them why? He really was utterly hopeless, honestly. I mean he was being all sweet about it, but still. When they insisted, she decided yeah, they were definitely pretty cool. And.....off they went. She sneakily emerged from her hiding place, and nearly did a little dance of joy. She hoped it went well, after all, it would give her so many new ways to tease him.
